What an amazing spread of styles, all of them enjoyable. First act was our own SandyBob, who is quiet and unassuming but full of talent. He sang a number of songs he wrote, accompanied only by frailing his banjo. Well done and very pleasing, SandyBob. The next act were three ladies from Seattle, Mckenna, O'Malley, and McKeenan. (I'd better double check those names)doing Celtic music with fiddle, guitar, and tinwhistle. All three ladies sang as well, and they did a mix of ballads and instrumentals. One I had never heard before was a song about regrettable logging in Ireland, the beauty of the trees having been stripped away, and the birds wondering where they will rest. A hundred years old, that song. The next act was the trio "Three leg torso". They were an incredibly high energy group who had me on the edge of my seat from the first note! They has violin, cello, and accordion. They played original songs meshing Klezmer, Russian, and Latin American styles! Amazingly, the blend worked wonderfully. Very enjoyable was the was the way the musicians played off each other and communicated visually while playing. Also of interest was how the accordion player and the cello player used their instruments for rhythm. The cello player quickly went from plucking pizzicato notes to tapping in two places on the cello and back to pizzicato. The accordion player rubbed his fingers along the metal ridges above the keyboard and got a washboard kind of effect. They were exciting, innovative, and fun! Oh, and by the way, I met Jonathan there, and he had not gone home after work. Soooooo, that would explain his absence from the wonderful welcome thread I started yesterday. I really enjoyed the variety in last night's concert.... do you always go to see the same style of music, or do you like the variety too? Margo-rita |

My younger brother is a latin percussionist and in the past couple of years he's played along with Celtic and medieaval music as well as drumming for african dance classes. He really enjoys it. The three ladies from Seattle sound like they sang Bonny Portmore, which is a beautiful song. Lyrics are in the digitrad. |

Funny you should mention Latin and Celtic together, because that blend of style is exactly what a friend of mine in drawn towards. Yes, 'Spaw, you'd be amazed at how wonderfully those three instruments blended.....Margo-rita |
