Can anyone give me the name of the song Peter Hicks wrote and the lyrics would also be greatly appreciated, mentions a Tolpuddle man and being convicted and transported to Australia. Was part of his set list with The Devil's Own for the May Day concerts in NZ.
Thanks

I have found the name now - The Wind and the Waves - and it is not by Peter Hicks after all. It is a song from the folk opera 'Loveless in Hobart Town' by the Grassroots Union Choir of Tasmania. The Wind and The Waves describes the separation and long journey of George Loveless as he is banished to Van Diemens Land. The song features Matt Woolley and was written by Simon Cocker and Matt Woolley. ( Peter Hicks does sing in a group with Matt Wooley, though.)

Any help with the lyrics or chords would be appreciated.

Thanks, Sandra.
I finally found a youtube of the Union Choir singing it, and have most of the words - know there are a couple of errors too!

The Wind and The Waves   by Matt Woolley

Farewell to my native shores
I'm leaving you today
Farewell to the woman that I adore
Van Diemen's Land awaits me

Love and home lie to the rear
I'm leaving you today
The 'William Metcalf' is so drear
Van Diemen's land awaits me

CHORUS:
Oh the wind and the waves,
The deep oceans swell
The winds are oft changed    And the waves are farewelled

Now my lot is five foot square         (I'm leaving you today)
I've penned my misery to share         ( Van Diemen's Land awaits me)

Blessed relief I've time on deck        (I'm leaving you today)
Clinking chains keep us in check (Van Diemen's Land awaits me)

                                CHORUS

God's wonders are on display                 ( I'm leaving you today)
Turtle whales and dolphins play                 (Van Diemen's Land awaits me)

On Roaring Forties albatross glide
(I'm leaving you today)
Creation's joy leaves me inspired
(Van Diemen's Land awaits me)

                                CHORUS

One hundred days and still twelve more
(I'm leaving you today)
Finally sight Van Diemen's shore
(Van Diemen's Land awaits me)

River runs from mountain pass
(I'm leaving you today)
Sullivan's cold,(?) my journey's nigh        (Van Diemen's Land awaits me)

                                CHORUS x 2

Hi guys, couple of "errors" to sort

Really appreciate your interest in the Loveless story and thanks for coming to the gigs...

Farewell to my native shore (singular)

The winds are OF change
The waves are farewell

Five men my misery to share
On the Roaring Forties
Sullivan's Cove

Finally we sight Van Dieman's shore

Thanks very much,Peter, for the corrections. Great performance by The Devil's Own singing this song at Palmerston North in New Zealand !
And if anyone else wants to hear this song, then in Youtube's search box enter "Grassroots Union Choir of Tasmania' - the fastest way to find it. The Tolpuddle Martyr Festival mentioned in the Union Choir's website sounds very interesting too, as was the story of George Loveless (transported to Australia)and the other Toll Puddle Martyrs.
Amended lyrics version now below.
