Joe Rae's Daemon Lover

Another thread made brief reference to Joe Rae's version of The Daemon Lover (Child 243), which can be heard on the Tobar an Dualchais website. (The first reference in that thread named him "John Rae" by mistake, and his Daemon Lover disappeared from the Tobar an Dualchais search results for a while but has now reappeared.)

There is a Musical Traditions CD with much information about him (and which I've just ordered) but it doesn't include this particular ballad.

The Tobar an Dualchais website reports his saying "that this song was collected in Tweedside at the turn of the eighteenth century". However his tune seems to me nothing like any of those in Bronson, but remarkably similar to Amazing Grace.

Anyone know any more about this version?

Richard
