I can play a D chord!

At long last, I can prove that I can play the chord of D on the guitar! You all thought it was just talk - just bluff on my part - but now I have incontrovertible proof:

Me playing a D chord!

(The crest in the bottom left of the photo is that of Hogwarts School - it was a Harry Potter themed 21st birthday party gig).

It looks like Terry Pratchett disguised as Will Fly to me.

You don't polish a 1960 Otwin - and I haven't started my next Discworld novel yet.

Anyway - I can also play a G7 chord, so yah, boo and sucks - and my guitar has suddenly and unaccountably been given a polish.

Still look like Terry Silver Pratchett though...

Is that a Snark on the end of your guitar?

It's a Snark. I've been hunting them for years - finally managed to catch one in the wild and get it into captivity.

Glad to see someone else use his thumb to either mute the bass E string or play it at fret 2 to make the note an F#.

The Creeping Thumb... I seem to do it more as I get older. More to mute than play F#, on the whole.

Will, do you ever use a drop D (bass string only)?

Very rarely. I think the last thing I ever played in dropped D was Summertime Blues - and that's some time ago.

Only time I EVER change from standard tuning is for John O Dreams Use single dropped D for an nice bass run as an Intro and fill .

D seems to be the only key that I CAN play in since I took up the guitar again. (again.) Stiff old fingers.
My pal Sean tries to persuade me to play a 'proper' D, barre and a C shape.
Even just a C is a bit painful, but getting better.

Al, does anyone WANT to hold you when you are in touch with your sensitive side?

My stiff arthritic left-hand fingers have me now reverting to the way I first learned to do a D chord: using two fingers (one doing a mini-barre on the G, B, and high E strings, and another finger on the 3rd fret of the B string).   I can do the full chord with the pinky on the D string too.    There are some disadvantages to using the 2-finger version, but it does facilitate some other techniques that I couldn't do from the 3-finger position.

But Will, please tell us: Can you play The F Chord?

You NEVER should start instructing anyone on guitar by showing them a barre F, unless you are secretly hoping they continue to play the autoharp, Bill.

F? Pah! Child's play.

Bb - now there's a key for fingerpicking in. A lot of players think that jazzy/ragtimey tunes in keys like F, Bb and EB are bound yo be difficult. But actually, for tunes in that style, most of the passing chords are quite straightforward G, C, D chords, etc. and you only get to hit the tonic chords here and there. Here's an example - composed to demonstrate the principle:

I love those demented chords!   And most of them are pretty easy to play too.
