10 May 12 - 08:05 AM (#3349083) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: Richard Bridge The history is out there for those who wish to look. I have not re-checked what I vaguely remember but I think what I found was this. In summary the Argentinians abandoned the islands and by treaty agreed to accept a tiny part which they then abandoned again. Since 1833 the Islands have been English and the population has been English and they want to be English. The Argentinians tried an invasion and got flung out neck and crop (which in itself would have brought any legitimate claim, if there had been one, to an end). The claim is profit-motivated colonialism. Much like the US claim to Cuba. |

10 May 12 - 08:57 AM (#3349099) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: Bonzo3legs If a country takes an island, that island is theirs. If years later, they win a war and still own that island, then that island is still theirs. That should be an end of it all. The Argentine Ambassador is not acting like an Ambassador at all - she doesn't seem to understand diplomatic protocol. So - doors to manual and cross check!! |

If there was any real wish to support their interests the British gvernment would be negotiating a joint sovereigty joint citizenship deal which would be far better for them. 10 May 12 - 04:21 PM (#3349273) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: Bonzo3legs I would be very surprised if future negotiation on sovereignty was built into the surrender document of 1982, so quite frankly I cannot see what this raving bunch of Argentines is on about. Almost all Argentines that we know - are sick to death of this continual fuss being made by their governments, and in particular the current one. |

AS I understand it, when the troubles were on, fishers came from as far away as Japan to exploit the fact that the British forces were keeping the Argentinian forces from protecting the fisheries. Is that still the case? |

From: MGM·Lion May I register ~ if not exactly an objection to, then a certain feeling of discomfort about ~ the tone manifested in the title of this thread? Ambassadors may have done all sorts of other jobs before joining their nations' diplomatic corps: I fail to see what relevance this might have to the efficiency or acceptability of the manner in which they discharge the duties of the office when appointed to it by their governments. ~M~ |

11 May 12 - 02:16 PM (#3349637) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: GUEST,Eliza Sounds a bit snobbish to me. Rather like the unpleasant remarks such as "Doors to manual" about Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge's mum. What's wrong with being an air hostess? And isn't experience of the wider world a very good thing when representing ones country as ambassador? |

|
11 May 12 - 04:24 PM (#3349697) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: MGM·Lion Not the same thing at all, though, Bonzo. Not even comparable or analagous. A bricklayer calling himself a stonemason is pretentiously claiming a higher qualification and achievement in related trades. Someone who has left one sort of career to embark, successfully (nay, triumphantly, even ~~ it is not every diplomat who makes Ambassador by any means!), on a completely different one, as has happened here, is in no way the same thing. It was a hostile & unworthily contemptuous title to give the thread. Thank you, Sir, for your gracious permission to register my objection; which you have now considerably compounded. I think you should be ashamed... ...But I don't expect you are. ~M~ |

12 May 12 - 10:04 AM (#3349964) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: Bonzo3legs Ah but the general immigration into Argentina during the late 19th and 20th centuries was from all over Europe. 12 May 12 - 01:32 PM (#3350020) Subject: RE: Air hostess calling herself ambassador! From: GUEST,999 Many years back in the civil rights era a fellow I knew who had left the US because he didn't want to be involved in Vietnam was over at my place. He was from Alabama. I don't know how aware you are of American history, but back then Alabama had a reputation for being backwards and racist. I'd been there in the mid 1960s on some civil rights stuff and so I asked him why it was so 'ugly' there. Brian (his real name--he died about eight/ten years ago) said, "Because the good guys don't make the news." I have remembered that since 1970. I know you have experience with Argentina, and I do see that. Despite the front you put up about some stuff on Mudcat, and the tails you just love to tug on, you're a much more compassionate person than you let show. I saw that with so many of your threads over the years and the social justice issues you have chosen to post about and then argue about, with darned near everyone. LOL If you do find the photos, I hope you'll somehow link to them so we can all see them. Wars and economics aside, poverty is a killer the world could do without. For poor people the bomb has already dropped. |
