BS: What do old men wear in the summer?

I am thinking, now that I am a senior (junior-senior?), of chucking the t-shirts and wearing a white cotton dress shirt, long sleeved, with jeans and ball cap. I might consider a different kind of pants but I am not up on seniors' fashion so suggestions would be appreciated.

I was considering a Tilley hat, but that seems like it might be a bit too warm. Plus, my good ol boy (redneck) side says "Tilley?" Then again, it would keep the sun off my ears and I am safety concious.

Perhaps a straw hat with brim to keep sun off better like the Ukranian men used to in Winnepeg...mg

Now we're talkin! A straw hat. Great suggestion.

And, I have a sombrero bought for me as a joke at The Dollar Store. Just the ticket for THOSE days when I feel like a bit of fun!

I have continued, and will continue, to wear cut-off jeans and t-shirts; or possibly light short-sleeved sport shirts with the tails hanging out, which is even cooler. The only difference from my youth and middle age is being more careful to wear some kind of hat.

The only change I've made in my summertime dress is that I now wear casual shoes instead of flip-flops when I'm in public. I prefer to keep my varicose vein-ridden ankles hidden under socks, and I'm not wearing socks with any kind of sandals.

As for headwear, I started going bald so long ago that I can't remember when I didn't need to wear a cap.

My first thought was "more wrinkles and a little less fur than they did when they were younger."

I appreciate shorts or long pants, usually tan coloured, with the side pockets for my wallet. My boney butt gets mighty uncomfortable driving any distance with a wallet in the back pocket. Short sleeved shirts, not tucked in and sandals. I put away my socks as soon as the weather permits and don't take 'em out again till I have to. I wear a ball cap, a straw pork pie or one of many hats that I've gathered if I'm gonna be long in the sun.

Tilleys are designed for hot weather, so overheating shouldn't be a problem.

If you are happy with artificial fibres they even have a model called airflow, which could be called extra-ventilated, but I would personally prefer the natural fibre originals.

If natural linen shirts are available in your region they would be my favourite for hot weather, though cotton is good. Folk reckon silk is very good, but I've never tried it. Its cultivation and care also count against it for me.

Course around here the main problem with hot weather isn't how to dress, but how to find it.

What do they wear? They wear out...

When I was a lad, they all wore trousers up to their tits held up with braces, and a flat cap. Now, they tend to wear Black Sabbath T shirts or, if they are old guard, sandals with socks.

Tilley hats are good. Mine has a ventilated section near the top so is nice and cool in hot weather. I assume this is the airflow feature. They are supposed to be able to pass though an elephant numerous times, or at least one that belongs to a zoo keeper has been eaten a few times. Good job they can handle a boil wash then.

Stay away from polyester - it doesn't breathe. Go for all cotton or linen shirts and shorts. Baggy so that the air can flow to all the parts of the body that you don't want to show off in public. I'm a fan of boxer shorts too. But put something over them when you leave the house. Please.

I'm not known as a fashion icon (!) but in the Summer (when we get one) I wear my large collection of music-related and travel souvenir T-shirts (75% black)and chinos. Shorts only when abroad. Occasionally, Hawaiian-type shirts I bought in WI, Cook Is & NZ. I have a smartish (Burtons) brimmed hat for the UK and a leather brimmed hat with mesh band I bought in NZ which I wear in Greece, keeps the sun off & lets the air in. In winter I revert to cords, sweatshirts & flat 'ats.

PS. As a young man I never wore hats, reaction to being forced to wear a school cap, I guess. Now I realise I have 2 caps (wool), one woollen beanie for really cold weather, one waxed cotton brimmed hat for wet weather, the two hats mentioned in the previous post, one Tilley hat, one straw hat and a white "Hello Sailor"-type cap I was given by She-who-must-be-obeyed. (Who also persuaded me to buy some white chinos for holiday- one clumsy husband + red wine + tomato sauces + white trousers- I don't think so!).

On your advice, I'll try the Tilley. Perhaps my notion of "too warm" comes from the fact that I wear my Tilley (well, it cost $10 at Walmart so it's NOT a Tilley even though it's made with the same materials in the same fashion) when doing yard work or carpentry so it may be fine for strolling down the avenue and ogling young women. On a other safety note... of course, proper sunglasses are required even when not ogling.

If I had to wear a helmet again in summer I'd be pithed off.

Cotton, linen...natural fabrics. Wool is good, too.

I think a kilt, perhaps a quilt kilt made from pieces of various tartans, and a tee shirt with a saying like "I'm With Stupid " or "USMC -- When It Absolutely Positively MUST Be Destroyed Overnight."

Here are some other suggestions:

One.

Two.

Three.

Any of these would look good with a quilt kilt. Combat boots required.

Sartorially though I gave up on T shirts in my forties , and am currently trying to wear out about a dozen short sleeved shirts that I bought more than twenty years ago for about £3 each , and cheap jeans and brimmed hats .

My missus thought it was hilarious.

It'll look good with the kilt and yellow wellies.

G F... google it. There are a number of styles now. Near as I know, the original has a round brim. As mentioned above, the are tough and (used to) carry a lifetime guarantee such that, when it wears out ya get a new one free. Machine washable. Keep the rain off ya. If ya get hot, dunk it in water and put it back on.

My sister swears by Tilley hats. Unsinkable or Floating or something like that. They're a tightly-woven cloth hat, durable, attractive, and expensive.

I wear a Panama hat to keep the sun off my thinning hair, a cashmere pullover on top of a long sleeved shirt over a cotton vest, black corduroys and black leather shoes with woollen socks. When it gets too hot, I remove my pullover and sometimes roll up my sleeves.

I hate hats but did buy one on the front at Sidmouth only to find my head got hotter. So its the walking trousers, as all year round, zipped off to shorts, vest type tee shirts but never the armpit display type, not uncommonly SOCKS with my all terrain sandals, to cushion the tootsies after a proper walk in boots.
Carry a car door and if it gets too hot you can wind the window down.
