17 May 12 - 07:25 PM (#3352196) Subject: Obit: Donna Summer (1948-2012) From: Joe Offer As I checked into my hotel tonight, I saw on the television screen that disco queen Donna Summer died of cancer Thursday May 17, at the age of 63. I've always hated myself for enjoying her music, because I like to think I'm too cool for disco. But I remember driving the streets of Bakersfield in the late 1970's, listening to Donna Summer on the radio and thinking that her music somehow lightened the pain of being in Bakersfield. I don't go to Bakersfield very often these days, but I think of her every time I drive down certain streets in Bakersfield. May she rest in peace. -Joe- |

Donna was a friend, who we met through her sound engineers. She even gave us her cat, a tortoise shell Persian, named 'Charlemagne'. Steve and Jurgen worked with her at Rusk Sound Studios in Hollywood, on Sunset. I've got some cool stories, one, I may have posted on here, not too long ago. Truly a good person, screwed around by her label, and a true talent. she also played several instruments. We may be offline for a few days, in attendance...just waiting to here. I seem to remember one with Barbara Streisand. She had a good voice and her music was always fun to listen to. I did not know that she played instruments, for instance. In her obit last night I read that she spoke fluent German - which not everyone who comes here to work takes the trouble to do. Just because I did not like her music, it does not mean that I could not have liked her as a person. I had always thought of her as a disco diva, but now a portrait of a more substantial - and likeable person is emerging. |

I really did like her later music that drew away from basic disco. And as time went on she showed that she was a class lady in many ways. I was in Bakersfield a few days ago, far from home and stopping overnight. My hotel was next to Buck Owens music bar and I had hoped to find some "real country music" there but the band was pushing out a modern country sound so I didn't stay. It was probably closer to Donna's disco than to Buck or the Hag. |

It lifts the spirit, and what about 'On The Radio?' - a majestic storyline, delivered with feeling! She was so much more than that Queen Of Disco branding. I am saddened by her passing. |

Fabulous pioneer Disco queen, albeit somewhat anxiously initially. Modern music wouldn't be what it is today without those early works - which irrespective of developments - remain as wonderful today as they were back in the day. |
