Obit: Donna Summer (1948-2012)

As I checked into my hotel tonight, I saw on the television screen that disco queen Donna Summer died of cancer Thursday May 17, at the age of 63. I've always hated myself for enjoying her music, because I like to think I'm too cool for disco. But I remember driving the streets of Bakersfield in the late 1970's, listening to Donna Summer on the radio and thinking that her music somehow lightened the pain of being in Bakersfield. I don't go to Bakersfield very often these days, but I think of her every time I drive down certain streets in Bakersfield.

May she rest in peace.

I've only been to Bakersfield once in my life (mid-70s), but, Joe, I understand...

Her music, as I remember it, was upbeat and eminently listenable, though not to my usual taste.

63 is way too young...(I'll be 63 in a couple weeks).

I agree: way too young. I am 63. I also agree that the music wasn't what I liked, but it appealed to many people. I understand that the steady beat made it easy to dance to.

I heard it on the 'Breaking news' today...I was going to post, when I heard it. Donna was a friend, who we met through her sound engineers. She even gave us her cat, a tortoise shell Persian, named 'Charlemagne'. Steve and Jurgen worked with her at Rusk Sound Studios in Hollywood, on Sunset. I've got some cool stories, one, I may have posted on here, not too long ago.
Truly a good person, screwed around by her label, and a true talent. she also played several instruments.
We may be offline for a few days, in attendance...just waiting to here.
Her real name was Ladonna Day.

Didn't she do some interesting duets back in the day? I seem to remember one with Barbara Streisand. She had a good voice and her music was always fun to listen to. Learning of her death was a shock this morning, as others have said, she was way too young.

LA Times obit.

A great shame. I always liked 'Dinner With Gershwin'.
RIP Miss Summer

I was not a fan at all, but it is often interesting to read what kind words people can write about someone who has departed. I did not know that she played instruments, for instance. In her obit last night I read that she spoke fluent German - which not everyone who comes here to work takes the trouble to do. Just because I did not like her music, it does not mean that I could not have liked her as a person. I had always thought of her as a disco diva, but now a portrait of a more substantial - and likeable person is emerging.

"I Feel Love" was a hypnotic record - cool, sexy, right up front. I never followed her career or bought any of her records, but "I Feel Love" was unique. A great performer.

Still looking good not very long ago... perhaps a little 'chunkier' than her heyday, and perhaps moving more carefully... but the cheeky grin is instantly recognisable!!

Great performer. Her work with Georgio Moroder stands up three decades on. RIP Donna.

I'm with you on 'I feel love' Will - one of the few records I listened to on headphones because it was so hypnotic you needed to exclude everything else.

Her work with Georgio Moroder wasn't just great disco,
it was a monumental game changing evolution in music cultural history...

Itr was a musical 'Big Bang'

Two universes, European electronic art music and US Soul, suddenly collided together
and human existence improved forever...

Now that's what I call Disco..

No fan of disco here at all, but I can't deny she had enormous talent and an amazing voice. I really did like her later music that drew away from basic disco.
And as time went on she showed that she was a class lady in many ways. Too young indeed -- may she rest in peace and may the best of her legacy live on.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross played an interview she did with Summer a few years ago. Very nice. Fresh Air Remembers Donna Summer, Queen of Disco. She describes how she recorded "I Feel Love."

I'm not a fan of disco either but may she rest in peace! I hate to see anyone go younger than myself. I was in Bakersfield a few days ago, far from home and stopping overnight. My hotel was next to Buck Owens music bar and I had hoped to find some "real country music" there but the band was pushing out a modern country sound so I didn't stay. It was probably closer to Donna's disco than to Buck or the Hag.

Her 'Another Place And Time' album of the late '80s, - a Stock, Aitken, Waterman production was and still is, one of the great all-time feelgood recordings. It lifts the spirit, and what about 'On The Radio?' - a majestic storyline, delivered with feeling! She was so much more than that Queen Of Disco branding. I am saddened by her passing.

Listening to her sing was a guilty pleasure for me as I was a blues basher and firmly in the anti-disco camp in the 70's but couldn't resist her voice. RIP.

Echo sentiments of Glueman & Punkfolkrocker. Fabulous pioneer Disco queen, albeit somewhat anxiously initially. Modern music wouldn't be what it is today without those early works - which irrespective of developments - remain as wonderful today as they were back in the day.
