An Gorta Mór / Carolyn Chisholm

On Saturday at Northwest Folklife in Seattle, I purchased a copy of Mary Garvey's new CD about the Great Irish Potato Famine, entitled Songs for Our Ancestors: An Gorta Mór / The Potato Famine. The fourth cut is a song about Irish girls emigrating to Australia, and about the work of Carolyn Chisholm to improve their lives. I have never heard it, and my copy of the CD doesn't give any info on writer or singer. (All I can say for sure is the singer is not Mary Garvey!) Does anybody know anything about this (including you, mg! I know you're here somewhere!)? I sent it in mp3 to an Esperanto friend in Australia, and she said she's never heard it before. It begins
Oh, the young girls of Ireland are off to Australia
and no more on Eireann's green isle will they roam,
for Ireland's can't feed them, but Australia needs them
to marry, have children, and to settle for home...

You must have gotten one of the coverless ones...we found a typo..well and Jon Bartlett found another one..so we stopped printing covers until we can fix it..

Anyway, our own Tony Mc Galey wrote and sang it and it is truly an inspirational story..the woman really helped the girls taken from famine workhouses at least in Ireland..maybe England too. Anyway, I am sure Tony will chime in. There is the barest of bare web sites.. this is literally just getting off the ground...we rushed to get it out by Folklife..web site should be a bit better by next weekend..but eventually web site will have the stories behind the songs.

Anyway, I just love the songs..mudcatters on it include Mick Lane, Tony Mc Galey, me, Alice Flynn, Seamus Kennedy and hopefully Alison on the next run. PM me or email me at irishfaminecd@yahoo.com if you would like to purchase one for a very reasonable price if you don't mind a couple of typos..which most people don't spot because I testede them..but you can wait for ones with=
out the typos but price will be higher...mg

If you follow this link and scroll down you can see a video of Tony McGaley singing his song. The lyrics are available on another link from that page.

Caroline, not Carolyn. Not sure where I picked up the erroneous spelling.

Hi Haruo,
If you followed Fergie's link, you will also see Fergie singing a brilliant song he wrote for the project. There is another song on the subject of female emigration to Australia called "God's Police" written by Australian Ted Egan, which prompted my research. However, Ted's song implies that Chisholm co-operated with Earl Grey in sending the orphans from the workhouses, so the aim of my song was to correct this.
The line "the worse plan conceived since Cromwell was here" was made by John Mitchell, and refers to Cromwell, in 1629, transporting up to 50,000 Irish people to Barbados. The young girls were sold to the sex trade, but were soon found unable to cope with the extreme climate, and so were farmed out to "Stud Farms", where they were cross-bred with locals. There hardier offspring were then sold to the sex trade.
Caroline's offer of help to Earl Grey was refused. He was more interested in re-uniting families for those already in Australia, along with sendind a smaller number of girls she had jobs lined up for. The great Mr Chips mentioned in the song was Charles Dickens, who used the name Mr Chips in the "Household World" to publicize Chishol's work.
I gave Mary permission to use the song following her request for a song on the subject to include CD. Hope you enjoyed her CD.
The Wild Bees Nest project is now out on CD and can be purchased for about 15 Euro(including post) from either myself or Fergie above. Just PM either of us for details.

`I should say that I will be getting out a copy each to those who participated...we did find a couple of typos and will reprint shortly. Music is still really great though. PM me if you are performer and if you want to buy extras for very reasonable price..friends and family won't mind the typos if they even notice them (mine wouldn't anyway)...others PM me if you want to buy a copy at a reasonable price...the music is so beautiful that I want it spread far and wide. Especially if you are of Irish persuasion..it touches on so many aspects of the famine...mg
