Springsteen sings a Wizz Jones song

I would never have imagined in a hundred years that Bruce Springsteen would have heard the music of English folk blues guitar veteran Wizz Jones, but on Thursday night Springsteen finished his German tour by playing a great version of Wizz's song When I Leave Berlinto an audience of 55,000 people. Here's a link.

I wonder if anybody will be inspired to seek out Wizz's 1973 version? I just looked on iTunes and it's easily available on several albums. Wouldn't it be great if it gave Wizz more of the kudos he deserves (and lots of royalties!)?

Now come the kisses too many, too late....

What a pity Dylan, Martin, Ralph, cliff, Elvis, Ewan....anybody! didn'tdo it 40 years ago. Top marks to Bruce though.

I hope he gave Wizz credit for it on Stage.

Bruce is a true student of music... Check out his "Ghosts of Tom Joad" CD...

Lotta folks think of Bruce as just this big E Street sound... I've known him since '68 and heard him play folk music on an acoustic guitar... One man, one acoustic guitar... He has that side of him and he is as exceptional at folk music as he is at anything he plays...

BTW, Bruce's first LP was "Greeting from Asbury Park"... Check out "Mary Queen of Arkansas"... Check out anything off his "Nebraska" LP...

The guy is a folkie and a rocker...

I have those LP's Bobert and others as well. I also have some underground ones that i payed way to much for. Sold them on E/Bay for a third of the cost.

I gotta some, too, Ad....

I first booked Bruce in '68 at the Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, Va... His band "Child" made more money that weekend then they had ever made in New Jersey... Then he changed the name of the band to "Steelmill" and brought in Stevie Van Zandt and Steelmill did even better...

It was great for Bruce and "The Center"...

So when you said you know him, you actually do? That's great. Seems like a good guy to me.

I'm sure lots of people have got Bruce Springsteen albums. But - quick survey - how many of you Bruce fans have Wizz Jones albums, or even heard of him?

Beer,

Well, let's say "knew" him... That was a long time ago... Lots of folks knew lots of people but...

I do remember taking him to "The Village" restaurant in Richmond the Friday before he played his first gig for us (The Center)... I spent to summers at Long Beach Island so we talked New Jersey stuff... "The Village" had something on the menu called the "pineapple cheeseburger" and I wasn't into meat but he ordered it... I thought that was brave...

Bruce was an incredibly shy kid back then... Kinda a loner... But on stage??? Different story... If ya' run into him say "Hey" and just remind him about the pineapple cheeseburger... lol...

Glad you liked it, ad... I gotta more but that one sticks out... Actually, I booked Bruce's bands about 8 or 9 times so I got to know everyone purdy well...

But like I said, that was a long time ago...

Was Clements(sp.) with him then?

Nope... The only one left is Stevie Van Zandt... Both Vinny's are gone... Little Vinny played bass... Vinny Lopez played drums... Keyboard guy gone... Just Bruce and Stevie left... Tinker, the band's manager, gone...

'The only one left is Stevie Van Zandt...'

And he's got a bandage on his head - don't fancy his chances much....!

Other than gaining 100 pounds Stevie is today what he was back then... Bandage on the head... Everyone was kinda pissed 'cause Little Vinny was real popular and then this guy with a bandage on his head shows up and Little Vinny is gone...
