Frog prince thoughts and prayers for my wife

09 Jun 12 - 10:47 PM (#3361470)
Subject: Thoughts and prayers for my wife, please
From: frogprince

Last Tuesday morning, just after midnight, my wife Judy suffered a severe heart attack. Her heart and breathing stopped. Fortunately we are only about three miles from a hospital. The ambulance crew arrived and started resusitation in very few minutes. But they worked quite some time, at our home and then in the ambulance, before she reponded. She is now in intensive care at a hospital 20 miles away, stable but still very critical. She was put through cooling and rewarming, and awoke about 40 hours after the onset able to nod or shake her head appropriately to simple questions. She has since been able to move her hands and feet as requested, but not quite consistently. She is at least aware of those around her when awake. She has a ventilator tube, so there is no way for her to try to speak; she hasn't made an apparent effort to make any sound. So far she has given no indication of recognizing me.

I hadn't really cried again, the last day or so, until I typed this.

The first thing at the hospital, they heart-cathetered her and got out a big clot from near her heart. When the doctor came out from that, he said that, if she made it through the next couple of days, there would be hope. We're on the fifth day, and they say she has gained little by little. But it's still a long way just to get to the edge of the woods. Thank you all so much for the support so far.

Sounds like we had an "interesting" troll post come and gone while I slept; I can't remember how to spell "kay sara, sara" right. : )

Judy was "with us" today more than anytime since this started, despite the staff saying they intended twilight sedation to help keep her restful. She gives a good firm hand squeeze, or lifts a foot right up, when asked. Two long-time co-workers of hers came in together, and she gave them a good big smile; that was the best moment to see so far. When the doctor asked her to hold up two fingers, she more-or-less raised her finger; couldn't really tell if she tried to separate two of them.

So: encouraging regarding the condition of her brain, but hard to tell how long before we will know if she will really be fully "herself". And she has severe heart damage, some possible other organ damage, and has to have crud siphoned from her lungs periodically. She is still very much at risk.

Judy mostly napped peacefully through visiting hours today. I did get a little more chance to talk to doctors. I'm getting from them that they see enough positives now to make a good long-term recovery plausible. She had a brain scan since visiting hours yesterday, with no real visible problems. She has needed some degree of sedation regularly to help her rest peacefully, so they can't really get further meaningful eeg results yet. For now they just keep checking her ability to respond when she's awake, and her progress is at least encouraging. But they're watching heart, lung, and kidney functions carefully; things are still very risky.

Judy was awake most of the visiting hours today, and at least as responsive. Just after I arrived she appeared to mouth something to me; I asked if she wanted to talk to me, and she nodded. But it's necessary to restrain her arms with short straps to keep her from pulling out her tubing, and she still got a tube out of her nose. She keeps twisting and sliding around in the bed and tugging at her restraints incessantly, so they have to reposition her frequently to keep her lying so she can breath well. She has breathed some with just cpap (sp?) but has mostly still been on the respirator; heart very weak, and lots of fluid in her lungs. They don't want to keep the respirator in longer than the rest of this week; they may have to consider a tracheotomy.

Subject: RE: Thoughts and prayers for my wife, please
From: maeve

Good, Dean. I hope you are keeping some notes for Judy. She'll want to understand what has happened during the time she's been in the hospital. The two of you seem to be such a strong team- that's certainly in her favor!

Pretty soon you'll figure out a way to help her communicate without risking her pulling out vital equipment. For now she may need reassurance and to hear your voice talking to her. Can you work out a yes/no signal she could try? Eye blinks, finger taps, big toe wiggles...anything to give her a way to communicate and reduce her frustration.

Prayers and thoughts continue, and confidence that healing is progressing,

Maeve

What Janie and maeve both said. Sound is the last faculty remaining when we get to the edge. It is very important that people be careful what they say around her and that she hear familiar voices, esp. yours, Dean, and music. We played Mozart on a cassette for my mom when she was in a coma and they didn't think she'd make it. She did for another 24+ years!

Dear Dean, Ann & I will stay with you in this thread, but we are also so pleased that you have found time to join us in ours. We have both been overwhelmed by, or have succumbed to Life's nastier 'surprises' over the years, so we have some insight & understanding of your situation. However, our empathy & understanding can only get us so far...we will never know the true depths of your concern for your Beloved Wife, or the complexities of the medical problems that have so beset her. It leaves us feeling powerless & unable to help in any meaningful way. What we can do, along with the many wise & good people of Mudcat, is send Love, Positive Thoughts & Words of Comfort...all of which come from our Life Experience. Kat's suggestion about playing Music to your wife, I have to endorse 100%. Pieces that she particularly likes, combined with pieces that have some sort of special significance...you will know what's best to choose.

Today was a wild ride, and my head is still spinning some.
Critical unit visiting hours are noon to seven. I arrived to find out that Judy had yanked out her respirator tube about 8:30AM. She was getting along without it so far, and they just left her to breath on her own for a while longer, then gave her a "bipap", which is an oxygen mask variation I had never heard of. Between breathing hookups
she said a few words; hard to understand because of what she did to her throat pulling the tube, but entirely rational. I got down to try to hear her, and she gave me the best kiss of my life on my cheek.
Her father and his lady friend came up a little later, and she was smiling ear to ear a lot while they were there.

She had a little incidental coughing during the day. Then, just before I would have left, she started prolonged severe coughing. They gave her lydocane (sp?) to soothe her throat, but still had to give her sedation. They were reluctant about further sedation, for fear of depressing her breathing to where she would need the respirator again.

So much that is so good, followed by a reminder of how delicate her condition still is.

Gonna have to be careful about that throat for quite a while. It's bad enough when they take the tube out, so I can only imagine what it's like after she yanked it out.

There's still lots of good stuff coming from Idaho.

Dean, I use a bipap every night to treat pulmonary hypertension. It's easy to use and makes sure one empties their breath as well as inspires, so there is no build-up of CO2. It helps one to deep breath which is a good way to prevent pneumonia from being in bed and sedated.

Remember for every one thing they do for her, it is meant to help, to make a safe environment for her heart and other organs involved and to reassure her. Sounds like that kiss meant she got the message! Don't look too far ahead, except to visualise the two of you waltzing out of there.:-) Remember for the moment: "Right Here, Right Now, All is Well, and We are Safe and Sound.

P.S. Do you have family/friends with you to help you through this?

Look down at your hands every now and again to see if the knuckles are white. If so, open the hands and gently stretch the fingers, breathing naturally paced, naturally deep breaths.

No forcing or artificial pacing of the breath.

As you breathe, note the tension in the head, neck and shoulders. Allow those muscles to relax. Lean over and kiss her cheek like she kissed yours.

Smile.

It won't hurt, and it may help.

Still here.

Janie

Yes, Kat; Her father, at 94, is still a real moral support for me. The next relative in distance is a brother-in-law (widower) who has already driven some hours to share time at the hospital. Other family members will support by phone, may make a 7 hour drive depending. Many folks, nearby and some at some distance, proving themselves real friends.

Dean, I know there is no way you can really relax, but try. Do you like the Docs and the nurses? Do you trust them okay? Sometimes they can be hard to understand and things that seem quite awful to you they see as a step towards a positive outcome. Sometimes it is almost impossible to see how, but those folks believe in what they do and most of them, if not all, are convinced they can heal anything.

Let me give you an example. Talk of a trach was bothersome I know but if that would be what it would take to keep her breathing and healing, its alright. Worst case is that when she improves there is an added time to wean from the respirator and the trach......but if it got her through a tough spot that's a good trade-off. As she heals there are going to be a lot of trade-offs but if they are all directed at bringing her back into some real sense of still having a great life......Hey.....Hang in and just keep this group pumping the good thoughts as well.

Don't know how to say this one but......Her life and yours are going to be forever changed by this event. That's changed, not wrecked. For all the world of things I have lost or lost the ability to do, for both Karen and I, these are great days and we're enjoying every moment we have. Some things I used to believe actually mattered I now find are really pretty silly or damn near meaningless.

Go back up a bit and read Janie's advice again, especially the "smile" part. The big part now is all about time. Time to be treated. Time to heal. Time to rehab. Time to get back into a sort of normal life. Time to be together......and that's the best time there is.

All good thoughts your way!!!!

Spaw

Dear Dean, Ann & I have made it over from 'The Rainbow' & will be around for just as long as you need us. Can't add much to what has been said already, so eloquently & profoundly. The Mudcat Elders doing what they do best. It's been said elsewhere, but eating & resting...'keeping body & soul together' as we used to say, is one thing you can do for yourself. Trust your Wife's Doctors & Nurses & try not to forget that the body's natural defences can still function, no matter how dire the situation appears. The healing process still remains one of Life's great enigmas.

Mostly another very "up" day. I came in to find Judy sitting in a regular chair, with just a simple non-pressurized oxygen mask. One friend to visit early, one of our bridesmaids with her husband to visit toward the end of the day; the way Judy talked and laughed with them, you would never have suspected what she's just been through.
We had rounded up a pad and pen, and been meaning to try her with it. I got it for her once when I couldn't quite make out what she wanted to say (throat still rough, and mask on). It took her a few moments to sort out how to grip the pen, but then she wrote "water" clearly.

Between visitors she got frustrated some, and asked "Can't we go check ourselves out of here?" and "Can't we go out and get something to drink?". She can't really keep a grip on some of the realities yet.

Judy again spent all afternoon sitting up, now with just a nose clip for oxygen; still a jungle of wires to stick-on sensors. Calmer today, and with only very incidental coughing. Her mental state is still a mixed bag. She knows everyone fine, and socializes as normally as possible with the conditon of her throat. But she can't be trusted alone, except in bed with a bed alarm, for fear she will try to get up and walk, which is still out of the question for multiple reasons.
Her swallowing is "iffy", and it's impossible to get a through exam of her throat without anesthesia, so all she can take by mouth for now is fine ice chips, a very few at a time. They're trying to determine by Monday whether they will have to put a direct feeding tube into her stomach for a while.

I never cared for such but whenever my boss and I were in Halifax or St. John's or some othe big city, it was required. I would have rather spent the cover charge and expensive beer money at the street sausage vendor carts, just like froggy. Ain't that RIGHT, froggy?

Somehow just not in a mood for fibbing right now: I've been in my share of strip bars in the past. Some of them were pits that I never considered going into a second time. In other instances, enjoying the sight of attractive female people helped ease me through some lonely bachelor years.

I came home sadder than I hve been for several days. A woman ran through more testing of mental function than I had seen done so far.
A fair number of simple questions, and a few simple tasks.

Spell "world"..."w-o-r-l-d"

Repeat for me: "pen, key, airplane"..."pen, airplane"
Let's try again: "pen, key, airplane"..."pen, airplane"

Asked to copy a simple pattern of two overlapping squares, she just made a jumble of lines.

Asked to draw a clock face with the numbers, she twice drew a circle approx the size of a nickle. The woman then gave her a good size circle and asked her to put in the numbers. She did put the numbers down clockwise in order, but all along half the circumference.

She named the right hospital chain, and state, but the wrong city.

Judy has been so impressive in her socializing with friends, and responses to routine procedures, that I just wasn't braced for the limitations. The staff, and other folks, have already been assuring me that, with the way she has progressed already, she may make it back much closer to her previous level. But at the same time the staff are being honest about the possibility that she could plateau without getting too much further. Judy took an extreme hit, with a combination of extreme low blood sugar and signicant time before resusitation from the heart attack.

I made it over to a good friend's place this evening (he was widowed about a year ago) and spent the best time talking about numerous things with him that we've had in far too long. I'm leveled out a lot better than when I left the hospital, and hoping for some decent sleep.

I so appreciate the backup from all of you so far.

Hi Dean......The whole testing thing they did does not represent anything except the current situation. Remember that.....and they did say as much. What they are saying too is....."too early to tell." In the past 12 or 13 years I have had 6 "near death" situations and in at least two of them I was answering those same questions and others in pretty much the same way. I had no idea who the President was and the only one I could think of was Nixon. I couldn't recall the three objects, couldn't write legibly...............Now you can argue that I am still fucked up but I do know Ted Kennedy is President.............no?.........uh........Millard Fillmore?

All kidding aside, you're right to prepare for the worst but don't expect it. Believe in the best possible outcome.....may not happen but right now its too early to tell.

Dear Dean, from what I've learned over the years, particularly when the brain is involved following trauma, it has to 're-make' many 'connections' as part of the healing process & this can take a while. Speech & Recognition can 're-connect' quicker than the fine motor skills required to draw & write. Short-term memory can be a bit of a slacker too! Reading back through your Thread, your beloved Judy does demonstrate progress being made. Having said that, I must emphasise again that I'm not a trained medic, just a Lover of Life & perpetual student of all that entails.
Ann & I hope, with all our Hearts, that Judy continues to heal & it won't be too long before you can hold her in your arms once again.

Knowing you have confidence in her and are there to encourage and support her will be very important to her recovery, Dean.

I know I've posted it before,, but can't find it. Briefly, a woman who was in a coma, then ltd. abilities, spent all day in bed or in a chair. Her husband bought a special vhicle to take her for rides and put her driver's license on a bulletin board right by her bed, He visited with her every weekend and after work. A year later, with hard work, his support and encouargement, she walked out of there. Her prognosis at the beginning was a short-lived time in a nursing home, then death. Medically, she should never have progressed the way she did. Even the docs believed it had a LOT to do with how her husband demonstrated his faith in her.

Contrast that to another woman whom I took care of in the same nursing home: she was all alone, Had a stroke in a remote cabin, froze to the floor before found. She had all of her faculties, slight impairment in one arm and trouble speaking, but her medicall prognosis was good with a goal to return home. Six months later she passed away one night, Most of us thought it was due to loneliness and no one to cheer her along the way in Life.

So, don't give up on Judy getting better just yet. It IS early days!**bg**

G'mornin', too.:-)

my friend Garry didn't even know me after his bad bad heart attack. He was confused and out of it and we have been brothers for 30 years. He is absolutely fine, fishing, all the stories. It was a huge trauma on her my friend. No doubt in my heart that she will recover fully. She is a young girl with great support and getting lots of prayers. Right now it is baby steps my brother. Even after I had the pulmonary embolism I didn't even know what hospital or city I was in .. kept asking over and over.

Dear Frog Prince,

Haven't been checking in to Mudcat the past few weeks, so just saw this today. So sorry to hear what you and your family have been going through, but encouraged by the improvements that you have reported.

Sounds to me like you are just the kind of wonderfully loving and supportive hubbie I would want if something like this happened to me. Well done to you, as well as to Judy, who sounds like she's a strong, determined woman who's not letting this get her down. Both of you have my admiration -- and very best wishes that she continues to improve.

Big hugs to you both.

JUDY IS OUT OF THE CRITICAL CARE UNIT!

They finally decided she could eat safely, and she promptly skarfed a substantial plate of pasta. They do need to clear some fluid from her lungs, and she will need to regain some strength and stability to walk alone safely. She will get at least enough physical therapy at this stage to help determine what type of care they release her to.

Judy loves the shawl Jacqui made for her; with good reason, it's beautiful.

Hey there Dean and Judy!

"When you think how depressingly slowly you climb, it's best to remember that Things Take Time." Grooks I by Piet Hein A very important book!

We now realize that it took Robin near a year to come back to himself after a simple concussion and subdural hematoma. He appeared to be functional but it was not as his optimal level. I laughed at the cognitive testing. "Oh, he's fine." Sure he was fine - for someone average but not for someone with a Mensa IQ who has quick mind.

Judy's "testing" will only show progress. It is a measure of where she is right now, now where she will be next month or next year. Now that we know how well the brain can heal, and rewire itself, we can live with tons of hope for the future.

I have read two excellent books: My Stroke of Luck by Kirk Douglas and My Stroke of Insight by (internet quit). Another one by two doctors/brothers about their father's recovery was full of good stuff but the name escapes my at the moment. These guys used amazing strategies to help father regain his abilities.

She may get transferred to a rehab setting as soon as within the next couple of days. Still can't quite read time from the clock. Today was at least the third time someone asked her who is president. Previously she struggled a little and went to a blank look; today she said "Doctor Obama" : )

Big curve ball: all along, through yesterday, they were talking in terms of deciding what rehab facility to send Judy to. Just after I arrived at noon for visiting hours today, everyone started talking in terms of releasing her TODAY, to Home!.

Their primary thought as to rehab had been a facility with neurological emphasis; they had communicated with that facility since I was there, and were told that they don't take anyone who is functioning as well as she is.

At least one doctor squelched the home-today part because of concerns over fluid retention and blood glucose stability (Judy has been type 1 diabetic, totally insulin dependent, since about three). But she may be home very soon. I've just been on the phone with her brother, and I probably should take his advice to line up some backup home care, at least until we see how things go. But Judy is "herself" to the degree that I don't really have serious misgivings.

I would be talking to my insurance about home care backup, Dean.
Judy's still 'in recovery' really, she's coming out the other side of a big episode.

Such good news! Back up care is so very important , not just for Judy but also for YOU!! I know, looking after my mother who at 88 has dementia and has lived with us since daddy died. I know I couldnt cope without the wonderful carers who come and help with mum, now I have Billy about to have chemo I am very aware that I cannot crack up and the carers make sure I dont. So take great care of yourself and enjoy all the good times with your lovely Judy and let others take some of the strain. Holding you both in my prayers.

A couple of days ago the lady walked pretty-decently-considering. Yesterday we went "around the block" of ward hallways a couple of times, and she was, no lie, setting a brisk pace. I don't think home care for physical reasons will even be an issue. But it's questionable if she will be able to do anything very complex, at least for a while. Her short-term memory, and store of general facts, are still pretty ragged. I'm thinking housekeeping assistance/respite companionship level stuff.

Definitely try and get someone to give you some respite. I guess that in her present state it wouldn't be a good idea for Judy to be left alone in the house and both of you will probably benefit from a little time apart.

My daughter's mother-in-law is in a serious way with cancer which has spread and has left her fairly immobile. Both she and her husband have been feeling the strain of her being housebound but he won't leave her, even with someone else there.

Could some of the memory problems be due to medication? - benzodiazepines are notorious for messing it up. In which case the problem should go away when she either gets used to it or they reduce the dosage.

Jack, while the meds may be a part of the picture, there is bound to be damage there from the time it took before resusitation took hold. She has bounced back so far, and is so much her usual self, that she may get back to very little limitation. Even as is now, there will be no need at all to keep her home in a flower pot. : )

Dear Dean & Judy,
I wrote this short poem for Ann & Jane. It was posted sometime ago, but I think it may have some meaning for the two of you, so......

"Walk beside me, hold my hand.
We're using time that wasn't planned.
Don't walk behind & force my pace,
There is no need for us to race.
And if in front your feet should stray,
Hold back, slow down, don't run away.
So walk beside me, touch my face
And feel the warmth of my embrace
As walking side by side forever
Binds so tight that none can sever".

Doin' fine, folks. We had a home care aid here for the first time today; I think she will do fine, and give my head some welcome chance to stop spinning. A visiting nurse also came and fine-tuned the medication regime a bit. We've spent some time the last couple of mornings at the local Tim Horton's (Yes, they do exist in the U.S.)
drinking coffee and jawing with friends, just like in real life. We're driving there for now, instead of walking the mile and back. But we've been strolling a ways down our street.

The progress that Judy is making is heartening reading on a sunny, Sunday morning, here in London. Returning to those 'personal normalities', the trips to the coffee shop, all the domestic routines, the day to day stuff to which we gave little thought (it wasn't necessary), now become markers on the road to recovery. Based on my own experiences, the (apparently) mundane actually forms a significant part of the bedrock to our relationships. It's only when we can't perform them, or they are taken away that we realise how much they mean to us. I'm waiting for your post where you tell us you WALKED to Tim Horton's.

H'lo all. It's almost hard to believe that life is this good again. On the 4th we picked up some KFC chicken & drove to a nearby lakeshore
recreation area to picnic and loaf in the shade and read, then came back into town for fireworks. Too hot to have Judy walking outside here today, so we drove to the big Meijers store a few minutes away and strolled the aisles. We walked by far the most that we have since she's been home, and she remained comfortable with it.
Two routine "follow-up" doctor's appointments yesterday. All good word except: we knew that her kidney function started to drop off a couple of days after the attack, then leveled. But I hadn't caught the actual reading of just 25% where she has been since. The doctor isn't really afraid for her unless she drops further, but we hope she gains back some more safe margin.

Its great just to be together and drive out to some cliff top cafe and enjoy a cup of coffee together, and enjoy the view.

I've been hoping to get lined up to start taking her for some cognitive therapy. Our quality of life is mostly so good again now that I barely give a hoot, but I'm sure she will be a bit happier if she can find it a little easier to manage details.

I'm married to a genius! Twice this morning, she has looked at the clock and mentioned the correct time!. Not sure she is totally reliable on that yet, but this is the first that she has done better than "ten minutes to...something".

She has been so much herself for so long now that the time problem, and other little glitches, seem incongruous.

We've been having a really nice afternoon, with one really odd moment. We just spent a couple of hours at a "garden party" - artists selling, artists painting, musicians, food concession - at the private gardens of some obviously very wealthy folk a few miles away. All sponsored by the art gallery in town and a number of local businesses. So, we were meeting a bunch of folks who hadn't seen how Judy is doing since the big blip; all cool. Then, Judy happened to mention the new great nephew we acquired a few days ago. The only thing was, she informed those present that he was born on an airplane. Strangest thing she has said since just after the attack.
No harm done, might as well laff I guess...

We had been planning a trip east, to Judy's brother's summer place on Martha's Vineyard, then up to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island before turning back toward home. Until a few days ago, I wasn't figuring that any real travel was realistic for now. But Judy is doing great. We saw her cardiologist the other day, and he said he didn't see why she couldn't make a trip east. I'm working on an abridged version of the previous plan: Martha's Vineyard, then maybe just up into Maine, and a bit of Quebec on the way back. We'll do motels instead of tenting some as we would have.

First cardiac rehab session today; the light first workout they gave her barely blipped her pulse rate. We're thinking in terms of setting out after she finishes a rehab session about 2pm next wednesday, the 25th.

Update, from Red Hook New York. We spent Judy's birthday yesterday driving from home thru Ontario to Dansville, NY. Wound up in a motel that, while not actually nasty, was shoddy enough to be kinda disappointing for her birthday evening. Made up for it a little by watching the old Ernest Borgnine movie "Marty", which neither of us had seen.
Today's drive included some miles winding through the Catskills, discovering some fun stops. (What kind of cattle have horns as long as Texas longhorns, but curved a bit differently and much thicker close to the head? No, they were'nt water buffalo or bighorn sheep)

Bobert, in April of '11 we went to Death Valley. The route I laid out put us in Shoshone, CA., one night. Calling Shoshone a town is kind of a stretch. One motel. The bed was ok, it wasn't really dirty, and I didn't see any personal safety issues. But. It allegedly had a kitchinette: The outer shells of some cabinets were hanging there sagged out of shape, and I would never have considered trying to light that stove top. The bathroom floor looked like someone had spread black adhesive and dropped vinyl tiles on it; trust me, I have a photo. Bobert, that place made the motel last night look like the Ritz Carlton.

And maybe sometime I'll tell you about when a Navy buddy and I stayed at the Hotel Marion in Chicago 47 years ago.

Never stayed in a hotel with an outhouse. Once had to crap in heavy duty plastic bags in a makeshift crapper (garbage can) but that was inside a house trailer on the coast of Labrador. Makkovik, labrador - look it up. It's ah, er, quaint. We were looking forward to a sewer hookup but the toilet cracked all to hell when they dynamited the bedrock next to/under the trailer to install the pipe. I was asleep in the bedroom next to the washroom when the blast went off (a simple misunderstanding)... near shit myself.

Say... this is kinda thread drift innit? Who started this thing about crappy hotels?

My worst experience was in Detroit. Flight cancelled due to an ice storm. Checked into a hotel half starved and exhausted after hours in the airport. Went to my room to find NO WATER. None. At the front desk they told me that a pipe had burst - they knew it when I checked in. Best of all, no kitchen. They had had a fire the previous week. The only food available was in a vending machine in the lobby and it was empty.
It was a big chain hotel - can't remember if it was Holiday Inn or not.

On that note - there will be a bed available Sunday night if you'd like to stay. Micca will be in the other room. We are invited to Kendall and Jacqui's for an afternoon bar-b-que but you will have your lobster roll at some point.
I have running water, food, drink and fans - no AC. But it has been cool at night. Not luxury or even particularly elegant but good company.

Pouring rain all afternoon into evening on Martha's Vineyard. But good times with family and friends. Earlier in the day we let Judy's bro and wife abandon us on the beach while they went to pick up our nephew and his family at the ferry. We got in a long walk on the beach, and the tradition on this beach being what it is, less strait-laced folks than us might have gone skinny dipping for a bit. ; )

Don't worry, guys; no new crisis at all. I was just showing my wife the latest on Nigel Patterson's thread for Jane, and then decided to run back through this thread. Judy's rememberer is working significantly better than when she saw this just after getting out of the hospital. In the next few days after this trailed out, we got to re-visit some 'catters live, and meet several more for the first time. Things have returned so near to pre-crash norms that any differences don't amount to beans. Judy's cardiologist has long since declared that her heart is working like nothing had happened, which I think astonished him. The kidneys have gained back to where they're nothing to worry about. Judy went through a stint of cardio rehab and a stint of cognitive rehab. We did the St.Martin trip, which was great. About 5 weeks ago we signed up at the local Rec center; we're both getting the best consistent exercise, every weekday morning, that we've had in years. I don't think I'll tell ya quite yet where we're planning to go in May.
Re-reading this drove home again how profoundly I appreciate all of you for seeing me through last summer. Bless you all big bunches.

It was twenty minutes between total arrest and resucitation. She recovered with no real physical disability at all. She has been able to do her own personal care, other than keeping track of pills and insulin. It's been up to me to cook and keep track of any schedules, but, no big deal; we've traveled to interesting places and life has been good.

Life-long diabetics are very subject to dementia, and to early onset. Judy's neurologist confirmed probable alzheimer's a year or so ago. Her ability to do things for herself began slipping away. We arranged a care-giver for three days of the week, and with that respite, we've been doing okay. A couple of weeks ago, her condition dropped off abruptly, to where she would not allow me to give her necessary care safely at home. Our care-giver came in daily while I arranged placement in a nearby facility; even so, I had take her for emergency hospitalization for a couple of days before we got her situated.

In the hospital she was restless, but cooperative with nurses and doctors. We took her to the care home Friday morning, a week ago. Thursday they asked me to come in for a meeting. She has been refusing to take her meds, or get up for meals. We arranged hospice status. By their definitions for hospice, they will continue the same care she would have received, so far as remains possible without force or restraint. They will not send her for hospitalization. We had completed a DNR a couple of years ago.

I think she is in the hands of good people, who will do the best that can be done. But my heart is in pieces.
                            Dean.

No words suffice, froggy.
Opening space in my mind's embrace and my heart's core
in which to shelter you.
Keep asking for what you need, and stay well.

Here's what I posted on the other thread:

Dean, you've made a wise but difficult decision. I'm sending love to you and your wife, and if I could find heart-mending glue, I would send it, too.

I know what you're going through. I went through it with my sister about a year ago. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
