11 Jun 12 - 03:58 PM (#3362211) Subject: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Bat Goddess This coming Saturday, 16 June, will be both the regular monthly, and the Third Annual Barry Finn Memorial Shanty, Forebitter and Ballad Session at the Press Room, Daniel St. in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. We're expecting a good turnout, including many of this year's Mysticians. Please come join us in lifting a song, a pint, a tot in remembrance of our old friend. 13 Jun 12 - 06:50 AM (#3362841) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: GUEST,Paul Schurr Charlene and I will roll in from Albany. We thought of Barry at Mystic as various people sang his songs, dedicated songs to him, imitated his unique style (Bonnie Milner!), and remembered his participation at the late night sing in the Youth Training Building. We're looking forward to seeing the Press Room gang once again! |
13 Jun 12 - 01:59 PM (#3362969) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Charley Noble Jim Saville and I will certainly be attending. There certainly were some of Barry's songs resounding from the Mystic stages and the German Dance Hall, and in Gloucester on Monday. We'll bring copies of The Complete Poetry of Cicely Fox Smith and my new CD Songs from an Old Sea Chest. Anyone coming up from the Boston area? If so, please send me a PM. Charley Noble |

14 Jun 12 - 06:59 PM (#3363515) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: RTim I am free over the weekend, but don't like the idea of a 2 hour drive to Portsmouth!! Maybe I should write to Marty? We only met a few times, but I too miss Barry. What could have been?? Tim Radford |
15 Jun 12 - 06:43 AM (#3363666) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Bat Goddess Tim, we'd love to see you again. Regular Friday Press Room session is today from 4:30-9:00 -- would two sessions make it a worthwhile trip? Linn |
15 Jun 12 - 08:06 AM (#3363682) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Charley Noble The long drive can be stressful but less so if you sing all the way! It's 90 miles one way from Richmond, Maine, to Portsmouth, and I'm always surprised when we arrive there well before I've begun the last verse of "The News in Daly's Bar." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
15 Jun 12 - 10:24 AM (#3363733) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Bupkes Tim's drive from Woods Hole to Portsmouth is more like 140 miles, taking 2½ hours if traffic's good. (This route includes taking Rt 3 from the Cape through downtown Boston, so it's always iffy.) I'm pleased to be hosting him, and he's planning to come by my place near Exeter on the way, Saturday. Marty |
15 Jun 12 - 11:50 AM (#3363765) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Charley Noble Excellent! Jim Saville will be shifting down afterwards to Boston and joining the MIT Shanty Sing on Sunday. Everyone is on the move! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

15 Jun 12 - 11:05 PM (#3364023) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: GUEST,Paul Schurr Re Tim, I'm glad someone has a short drive. Good for Tim! Albany is a little farther. It's all good. A few songs, beautiful mountains, we're there! Tim's shanties were a hit at Mystic I'll tell you. And it was fun seeing him enjoy the beer hall shanty sing scene from a royal throne in the middle of the room just be below the beer taps. (He wore a hat to collect the splash!) Like a king! A repeat performance is urgently requested by fans. Also at Mystic: Wasn't Jeff a shining star? Of course Finest Kind teamed up on him and owned the harmony side of the event. But Jeff was spot on with every song and raised the average under the tents. What a joy to listen to, and I hope he'll be singing with us tomorrow. After hours at Mystic it was Charlie, Norris, Mike, and Chris who provided the core of good singing. I think Saturday night after hours was the best I've seen and heard in five years (I don't always both see and hear; it depends on the libations). 40 plus folks, with Mark Bernier his joyful ranting self and Craig Edwards cast a spell of sound and rhythm. Well I look forward to singing with you again on Saturday, Charlie. We're lucky people to have places like the Press Room and friends to sing a chorus with. And the longer the chorus, the more I remember my friend Barry. See you tomorrow in Portsmouth. Best, Paul |

16 Jun 12 - 10:27 PM (#3364411) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Charley Noble There certainly was a fine turnout and everyone got several rounds of singing. Of Barry's songs there were: Roller Bowler Yangtse River Shanty Ida Lewis London Julie Hard Times in Ol Virginia And there was the shanty dedicated to Barry as well that Tim Radford and Marty led at the end. Everyone was in fine form and there was even opportunities for more quiet songs. My friend from Yorkshire, Jim Saville, seemed quite delighted. And now he's on his way to Boston with Bill Lehrman and then more shantying on Sunday with the MIT crowd. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
16 Jun 12 - 11:11 PM (#3364419) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: GUEST,Paul Schurr What a great time. Good song selection, strong singers, wonderful harmonies, and renewed friendships. Barry would have been pleased. |

17 Jun 12 - 02:19 PM (#3364624) Subject: RE: June/BarryFinnMem.ShantySing@PressRmNH From: Bat Goddess Dave not only has a great camera, but a good eye... Thanks to Bill and Carol for taking Jim Saville with them to Boston where he should be attending the shanty sing at MIT today, and flying back to the UK on Monday. It's been a lot of fun sharing time with Jim this week. I'm sure he has a very distorted but pleasant impression of how people in the States deal with strangers. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
