BS: Frog Invasion!!!

I donno???

Seems like there are thousands and thousands of baby frogs (about 1/2 inch long) that have hatched out ('er whatever) and they are everywhere... It's hard walking without steppin' on one... They are every where... Too small to eat and too cute to step on...

What's gonna happen???

I think snapping turtles usually eat them.

Seriously, sounds more like peepers than baby frogs. Or just itty bitty frogs. Or hallucinations. Baby frogs are tadpoles.

They ARE frogs!!! Just small ones... Not tadpoles... They hop... They look like small frogs... I think they are frogs???

Enjoy the baby swamp singers -there was worry a few years ago that they were in serious decline.

I'd be careful if I were you, Bobert. Jabba the Hutt eats those little suckers and he might be around your place.

They're probably toads, not frogs. Frogs live their entire lives in or near water, but toads only enter the water for mating. When the toad tadpoles are mature enough to leave the water, they emerge by the bazillions and hop away to drier lives.

Don't smear up the carpets with frogs on your shoes,
Frogs on your shoes,
Frogs on your shoes,...

I have lots of those baby toads around here also, Bobert. They seem to lay enough eggs to have a few spares in case big-footed yard-shufflers stomp some. I encourage the toads and the lizards to hang out in my garden, they deal with a lot of insect pests.

Enjoy
We have a blocked land drain in our acre of what passes for a garden -an annual fight with the rushes and the buchalauns.
Every year a frog lays it spawn, which is quite often dried up by now by the short spells of good weather we tend to get in the west o Ireland.
This year we've kept the taddies alive by topping up with a hosepipe and we now have dozens of half-formed frogs (not toads) venturing out onto dry land.
The survivors will eventually spread all over the garden and into the surrounding fields.
Help your visitors do the same and give yourself a medal for having done your good deed for the year.

I'm purdy sure they are frogs... We have a 1/2 acre pond and the closer to the pond you get the more of these critters... Plus, taods are squatier and frogs are longer... We have baby toads, too, BTW...

Sounds like snakefood, birdfood, catfood to me. Be sure you keep your screendoor shut, Bobert. One of my cats kept bringing toads and frogs into the house only to discover (once inside) that she had NO KITTENS. She wasn't the brightest one of the herd...

Lick them to see if they are Cane toads.Let us know if they are-once you come down.
If they have good sized legs, they could be the French variety.

I've got thousands of baby frogs this year. I get loads of common toads too. I talk to the big ones and tickle 'em under the chin. They come to my back door night after night and they love a bit of human company, as long as you talk to 'em. What's been a horrible cold, wet spring and June for us humans has been brilliant for amphibians. I found a dessicated newt in the bottom of a neglected plant pot, with the texture of a deep-fried sprat, all sort of stiff and dried out. Mournfully I dropped it into the pond. And guess what... (I don't even have to tell you, do I).

I do like frogs. This week, I mowed the lawn. When I got to the last tuft of uncut grass - a great big frog hopped out. Cutting the long grass, I had destroyed its habitat. I must have been pursuing the poor little sod with the lawn mower, and that little tuft must have been his last refuge.

Felt like Ronald Macdonald cutting down the rainforest.

I haven't seen frogs this spring, but I've spotted an unusual number of tiny toads in unusual places. We don't usually see the ones that are common before they're at least 3 inches or more in body length, but these have been all less than 3/4 inch long.

It's common for the larger ones to gather near an occupied dwelling, since the light from inside attracts flying bugs to the area. In a former home they would gather on the patio slab for supper in the early evening. Occasionally I'd leave the outside patio light on to draw a few more delicacies for them.

One of their impressive features is that their tongue can flick out a little more than twice the length of their body to snag a bug that ventures near enough, and I've spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to catch a picture of the "flick" for a few disbelievers (many years ago); but the closest I ever got was one shot with a bit of bug-tail still barely visible, protruding from the mouth of one toad. They're very quick with the flick.

Even with a movie cam, the actual tongue action always came out and disappeared sometime in the space between frames, so I used the lack of success to lecture the kids about the "application of statistics to the experimental methodology of sampling for low frequency events" at one of our family gatherings.

Well, seems as if all them frogs have decided to not be frogs at all but toads... Must be a thousand within 100 feet of the house... If they all grow up to be big toads then we may be the subject of some Japanese b-rated horror movie in a few years...

But they are cute... Big enough now so that I can avoid stepping on them and their eyes are good enough to stay the heck away from stuff...
