I am not a football fan, but each of the 3 goals against Sweden last night was a masterpiece.

I'm looking forward to seeing England thrash the Commonwealth team at polo today in Beaufort Polo Club!

England never cease to confound me. They had not beaten Sweden in any competition in over forty years. Last night they fielded one of their least talented sides for decades, yet they played well and scored three superb goals. Funny old game, isn't it?

On a slightly different note, why were England playing in a black (or was it navy blue?) and sky blue strip yesterday when there was no obvious colour clash with the Swedish strip?

I assume it was to satisfy the well-known aesthetic sensibilities of our professional footballers.

I'm sure it wasn't just a cynical ploy to encourage adolescent boys to fork out yet more money on over-priced replica kits!

Could someone enlighten me?

I believe England had to change colours because the Swedes play in a mainly yellow strip. Had both sides been playing in a light colour strip, this could have caused some problems for TV. I believe that is the reason, but I would be interested to hear from anyone who has better information!

what was that amusing headline about swedes and Turnips, and what defeat occasioned it?

So Whittle has an axe to grind over polo does he? Perhaps he can offer a reasonable explanation.

No. Totally unreasonable, I admit. I don't like the cut of their gib. Did they win?

No they didn't - by a country mile, but he real winner was the w.eather, which was dire with high wind and driving rain. I was hoping to get some decent photos using my telephoto lens converter, but with having to balance a large umbrella as well all but half a dozen shots will be dumped.

Not much fun for the players at 40mph in that wind.

They don't like water polo though, not being good swimmer and all that.

England were good, very good. One thing that has helped has been the relative lack of hype and media expectation. With many big name players either injured, suspended or put out to grass, and the manager being parachuted in to deal with someone else's preparation, I honestly think the lads, especially the younger ones, had less pressure than normal and were allowed to play to the manager's plan rather than the back page prep talk...

I wonder if his 4 4 2 will allow Rooney and Carroll on the pitch at the same time? if we can trust the defence, add Welbeck to an attacking formation and this might, just might be our year?

Ah, the Germans.   Always the bloody Germans.......

Thanks for your response, alanabit. If that is the case, why didn't they play in their more usual red shirts?

1) Labour tipping the black spot to sneaky Blair and letting Gordon the Unelectable take his place. Deposed....by Thunder!

2)Clegg climbing into bed with Cameron

3) Cameron's weakness for a certain red head

Three superb classic English home goals!

Hi

So another Group has completed the course. More surprises with Holland(Nederlands) failing to win even one point in the competition !!!

Ronaldo found some of his undoubted ability last night to score two good goals and although he missed a couple he also hit the post and set up Nani who missed the sitter.

That Germany came with one goal of actually being eliminated shows the tightness of the qualification.

Hard luck Denmark who I feel would have qualified in other Groups.

The pundits have already decided that tonight's qualifiers will be Spain & Italy.

Could Ireland create another shock? I sincerely hope so. They are clearly technically inferior to the other teams in the Group, but they never stop trying and given just a little luck and their fighting spirit could just see them beat Italy. I hope so.

Croatia won't lie down to Spain either ummmmm could be interesting tonight.

Cheers

MikeL2

"I believe England had to change colours because the Swedes play in a mainly yellow strip." Isn't their change shirt normally red though! I suspect the real reason these teams keep changing shirts is purely financial. Sell as many different shirts to gullible punters as they can!
