One thing at a time! Now that the Mystic Sea Music Festival and the Blackstone River Theatre's Summer Solstice Festival are over, it's time to make plans for Summerfest in the historic district of New Bedford, MA. It is a lovely festival with several stages within a few short blocks of cobblestoned streets. One venue is the auditorium of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Another is a small auditorium in the National Parks Visitors Center, and a third is in a garden on the grounds of the visitors center. Those are just three of the sites! There are chairs at the outdoor stages, but I usually bring my own in case they are all occupied. There are many craft vendors who set up stalls right in the streets which are of course all closed to traffic. Food vendors set up along the streets, too, and near some of the stages. Some ethnic foods are available, and seafood is sold in an area next to the main stage. And of course there are many restaurants in this district, and many of those restaurants sponsor the festival. Free parking is available. Among the performers: Catie Curtis, Jeff Davis, Bob Franke, The Kennedys, Patty Larkin, Ian Robb, John Roberts, Garnet Rogers, Peter Yarrow (just Friday evening, I think), and so many others! Seriously contemplating jumping on a plane to Logan to escape appalling English weather. I'm told New England currently is basking in temperatures nearing 100 while we are shivering and being soaked at the Solstice. To encourage other Britons to fill the flight I'll mention that John Dipper and Claudine Arcand are booked and will hope down from Quebec.

Thanks for telling me about them as they are unfamiliar to me. Now I'll be looking for them.

This weekend! Downtown New Bedford, MA. Great performers, multiple stages, craft vendors who set up booths on cobblestone streets!

I had a wonderful weekend. I especially enjoyed the trad music but sampled other things, too. The tribute this year was to Bill Morrissey. Art Tebbets narrated, and Garnet Rogers and Catie Curtis participated.

Borchester Echo, if you see this, I want you to know that I'd planned to hear John Dipper and Claudine Arcand, but they did not come. I talked to one of the stage hosts and she did not know the reason for their absence, although she did know that Women in Docs did not come because of a death in the family.

Sounds great. Wish I could've been there. Do they get a big crowd?

Yes, they do, though I think this year the attendance was down. That may be because of the heat and also because Newport, RI, had Tall Ships this weekend. With seven stages and only two being indoor spaces with limited seating, there was no problem finding something worth listening to. Even with the heat, those two air-conditioned indoor spaces did not fill up, though in one some people sat on the floor and steps or stood against the walls. And although the seven stages are spread out by a few city blocks, they are small blocks and it takes only a few minutes to walk the distance between the two stages that are farthest apart.

Thanks ChanteyLass. I've been trying to get an idea of the set up there, and you've been a great help. Maybe I'll get there next year.
