It made me insanely GLAD that I was not an adult during WWII; I have a pronounced tendency to feel culpable in any disaster. After responding and reacting to so many photos I became aware that what brought me to drenching tears was the images of powerlessness, whether age related or status or a reunion after having thought someone or something was gone forever. By the way, the man in Tianniman Square was anything but powerless. |

The shot of the boy hearing for the first time was plain and simple a moment neither he nor any seeing that picture will ever forget. (Shot 22: I have two stories, one about a cat at a house fire and the other about a baby porcupine after a forest fire. I'll leave them for another time.) |

I was 20 when Tienanmen Square happened. It made a huge impact when I saw that photo when it happened, and it still does 23 years later. |
