BS: Forty Powerful Photos

I came across this site by accident. The photos range widely; some of them are scenes I have known for most of my life and others I had never seen. They range from WWII years to contemporary times and all of them are overwhelming.

I knew I shouldn't have looked. And yet I looked. Yowzah! Thanks for sharing, Ebbie.

I know, Saul. It starts out fairly benignly and then punches hard. I sat here in tears.

I've seen similar photo essays in Life Magazine and elsewhere. Good collection of pictures. I liked the last one the best.

#20 is one that graphically demonstrates a people's feelings at being invaded. It made me insanely GLAD that I was not an adult during WWII; I have a pronounced tendency to feel culpable in any disaster.

After responding and reacting to so many photos I became aware that what brought me to drenching tears was the images of powerlessness, whether age related or status or a reunion after having thought someone or something was gone forever.

By the way, the man in Tianniman Square was anything but powerless.

It turned out that he was powerless. Or at least that he did not change anything. That one is one of the saddest for me. Brave guy though.

Number 22 did it for me.

I know what you mean, 9. It made me cry- crying is something I do with difficulty so having an absolutely wet face is unusual for me.

I did love the photo of the boy who had never heard before.

I was in tears with about half the pictures, Ebbie, and like you I have seen many before. The shot of the boy hearing for the first time was plain and simple a moment neither he nor any seeing that picture will ever forget.

(Shot 22: I have two stories, one about a cat at a house fire and the other about a baby porcupine after a forest fire. I'll leave them for another time.)

Thanks, Eb...

I confess to having only seen (or remembered) about 15 of them... Wonder why "The Kiss" wasn't included??? Or the child running naked in Vietnam after being napalmed... Or the Vietnamese guy getting shot in the head... Or, or...

But thanks...

It is a thoughtful collection...

B~

I know what you mean, Bobert. There are so many iconic shots. Did you see the news story the other day about the napalmed girl today? She is doing well.

Bruce, not at the moment (I've cried enough for one day) - but I would love to hear your stories.

I understand. (They both had happy endings, but I don't want the thread interrupted.)

Yes, Eb, I did...

She's come a long way since that eventful day...

I think #36 hit me hardest. #18 and #19 were close seconds. And the Tank Man. I was 20 when Tienanmen Square happened. It made a huge impact when I saw that photo when it happened, and it still does 23 years later.
