From: JohnInKansas It's obvious that those elsewhere have more choices, but in my part of the US almost anything on the shelves is good enough if you're going to mix it. On the other hand, if you just take a sip now and then, I'll agree with Willy that the ONLY thing that doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth is Jack Daniels Old No 7 (Black Label). I've tried lots of others (I've had well over half a century for the trials), and if there's another decent one (consistently available here) I haven't found it. If the question was intended to include "Scotch" - which I consider "something else," there would be a couple of possibilities, but I don't do much of that except on special occasions, and at my age I don't get invited to many of those. From: MGM·Lion I first heard joke about Pope's phone # in 1954, in my last year at Cambridge, when I was a member of the Union's Kitchen Committee & someone put it in the suggestions book. I don't drink these days, but I recall Vat 69, along with Grant's, as my favourite from long ago. Re the 'whisky'/'whiskey' thing: traditionally it has been Scotch Whisky & Irish Whiskey [leaving out these transAtlantic variants]; but it is not hard & fast: Cutty Sark labels say 'Scots Whisky' (tho it says 'Scotch' on the home page of their website ~ most confusing!); & people still seem to buy it. However, the spelling distinction still applies. Are there any exceptions? ~M~ |

I told everyone that Scotch tasted like hair oil....then, in the movie "Mr. Roberts" they confirmed it! Now, I suppose, there are a 'few' blended Scotches that are at least tolerable, but I never bother. I can see why folks would go for Jack Daniels or George Dickel, but I don't drink enough to get used to them. |

From: BrendanB I was once given a bottle of Crown Royal Canadian whiskey and quite liked it but I still prefer scotch over all others, including bourbon. My favourites are Talisker and Ardbeg. A friend once shared a very old Talisker with me which was simply phenomenal, I can't remember exactly how old it was but I don't think I have tried better. |

From: Megan L Since Kirkintilloch is a place i know well your mention of Dugans Dew o'Kirkintilloch had me confused since I never remember a distillery there indeed it was a dry town till 1967. However a brief visit to the blog of an old native of the town brought an answer to the conundrum. "There used to be occasions when Americans visiting Kirkintilloch asked to be directed to the Duggan's Dew distillery, and were disappointed to find that no such place existed. In fact there was - and there still is - a popular whisky in America called "Duggan's Dew". The makers had taken the name from a series of short stories published in the Saturday Evening Post. Written by Guy Gilpatric 1896-1950, they featured Colin Glencannon, a ship's engineer on a tramp steamer who with his dog Mary had come originally from Kirkintilloch. He was very fond of a drink, his preference being the whisky made in his home town, and there was always a mention of "Duggan's Dew" in the stories. I believe a 39-episode series based on his adventures was produced for TV in the late 1950s but information about this is scarce. The author himself had an adventurous life. An airman in the first World War, he became a stunt and test pilot, and took part in a number of films. In one film he had to crash a plane, but another "take" was needed, and he had to do it once more - with another plane, I presume. Incredible!" The motto of the wee toon is still to be found on an old fountain on the main street and is apt to all whisky drinkers "Caw canny but caw awa" |

Blind tests have shown that I cannot distinguish Jack Daniels from cheaper stuff, among which I prefer Old Crow for sentimental reasons, it being mentioned in a novel I like, _The Revolt of Mamie Stover_ by William Bradford Huie. |
