Lol wasn't just a brilliant sax player tho'. His iconic Ear Of Beholder LP was reissued last year - twas a fine, if at times distinctly weird, set, well worth checking out if you're curious. |

I was part of a short-lived band with Lol and Steve and Phil Miller, as (would you believe) Dyble Coxhill and the Miller Brothers or DC and the MBs for slightly short. We did a small tour of the Netherlands and some university gigs and then went our separate ways, but in that short time I learned a huge amount about freeform improvisation and learned to love it immensely. I had an email from him suggesting we work together again last year, but sadly it didn't happen... RIP Lol You were unique |

I only got to see LC play live once - it was back in the 80s when I saw him playing a solo set supporting Vi Subversia of the Poison Girls. It was a brillinat night - one of those gigs that stays with you. One of my all time favourite records is the LP he made with the radical outdoor theatre company Welfare State International. They were pioneering many forms of street and processional music with various guest musical directors in the 70's; among these were Lol (weirdo jazz), along with Mike Westbrook (more conventional jazz) and myself(rough folkie). Lol wrote simple tunes for street musicians, and was a great man for sitting in a field and playing the sax in a quite extraordinary way. It was a privilege to join with Lol and Mike and others to be a part of that wildly innovative world. Lol kept a flow of ideas coming over a vast period of time, a wildly imaginative and productive musician. It was great that he was around, and a shame that he is gone. |

This is the first time I had heard of his death, and a Mudcat search, while revealing that he had several Mudcat fans, does not seem to have mentioned it. Perhaps someone will provide a suitable tribute. |

If you use the search Forum (top left), that depends on an index and the index hasn't been updated for some (fairly long) time, so you won't find anything recent. I remembered the thread and just used the Filter on Coxhill with the Age drop-down set to 30 days (overkill!) and up it came. This is one of the best (and quickest) ways to find things if you know some text that's likely to be in the thread title (Filter only checks the titles). Otherwise you can use google and add site:www.mudcat.org to the search parameters. Mick |
