BS: Obit: My Former Mother-in-Law

Subject: BS: Obit: My Former Mother-in-Law...
From: Bobert

This one is tough... My former mother-in-law, Agnes (last name withheld for privacy) died yesterday at age 97...

I married her daughter, Judy, a long time ago... Judy died of breast cancer on October 2, 1996... Agnes had moved in with us 6 months before Judy died and the 3 of us were a team until it became more a 2 man team toward the end of Judy's life...

Agnes and I have stayed in touch ever since and those 6 months connected us forever...

Sniff...

I'll miss you, Agnes...

I'm sorry, Beaubear.

Ain't nuttin' "former" about such in-laws. Still family, and you have just lost a member of your family.

Love and light to you and all who loved her.

That's sad news, Bobert....sounds as though Agnes was more than a MIL, she was a great friend.

Just because the original connection isn't there doesn't make the family you are bonded to any less family. My ex-mother-in-law was always a sweetheart and I was glad to get to visit with her at length a few years ago when she came for a visit with my ex for a month. And I always encouraged trips with the kids to visit her - the more they know about their grandparents, the richer they are.

Sounds like Agnes had a long life, though not always happy, because the heartbreak of losing a child is torture at any age. Having you there was most certainly a huge help, Bobert.

Sorry for your loss, Bobert.

Well, I'd love to say that this is still family and for some everything is cool... For others, not so... Judy didn't want to be buried in Ohio and Judy planned every last detail of not only her funeral but where she would be buried... There's a very tiny town in Loudoun Co, Va. called Hillsboro and she loved riding thru it because it's in a gap between two mountains just wide enough for a two-lane road with houses on each side... Just before Hillsboro is a cemetery and that's where she wanted to be buried... Her two sisters wanted to take her back to Ohio to be buried... I said no... Made them real mad... Other things weren't working, too, but I'll leave it at that...

Yes, she is buried in the small town of Hillsboro...

I recall the night she died... All the arrangements had been made... That's when sister spoke up... Heck, sister never once came to visit during her treatments but showed up that day before she died... Sister told me that they were going to take Judy back to Ohio... Judy's mom was no match for sister... Judy had left her funeral file which I happened to have when sister made that announcement... I held up the file and said, "This is what Judy wants... She's staying"... I don't think sister and I have spoken since...

Oh well, stuff happens...

Agnes will be buried tomorrow... I haven't called my mom yet... Maybe in the morning... It's going to tear her up... They were close...

Good for you for keeping her wishes. My dad didn't want to cause any fighting between his kids and his second wife, so never would say which place he wanted to be buried...her family plot in whoknowswhere Utah or with his parents and grandparents and the rest of the family in Colorado. He had told me he'd prefer cremation, but she's of LDS extraction and would have all of what that entails. So, I will never visit his grave and regret not speaking up to her when she asked what we kids preferred, not that that made any difference. I know he's not there and it doesn't matter at all, but he had such a love of the CO place and instilled such love in us, it just doesn't seem right for him not to be there.

Sorry for the drift, but I just had to say I respect you so much, Bobert, for doing that for Judy.

Unfortunately, the sister is one of the family "bosses" (control freaks) and the family in Ohio is kinda typical Eastern European (Chez), Catholic and reunions are a couple hundred people and sister has done all the damage she could on my reputation...

Thankfully, Agnes lived with us that last 6 months and knew different... I doubt seriously if Agnes ever told anyone that we'd talk on the phone... Wouldn't want the wrath of sister...

Guess this stuff happens a lot...

I am sorry for your loss, Bobert. I am also glad that your were able to make sure Judy got buried where she wanted to be buried. Any rational family member should accept that when shown written documentation from the deceased. I hope Agnes gets buried wherever she wanted.

Thanks, C-lass...

Won't be any problem... Agnes will get buried right where the Ohio folk can keep an eye on her...

I am sorry to hear your news Bob. You did a good thing staying in touch with your mother-in-law - for both of you. You were also right to respect your wife's wishes. I hope that in time the family will see that.

So sorry for your loss Bobert. Agnes sounds like a fine lady.

Families can be a real minefield when it comes to things like this. Kendall and I have discussed all this with both sets of kids so everyone knows our wishes. I've also threatened to come back and haunt any of mine who disregard my wishes!

Yeah, Agnes was a fine lady... Born in Czechoslovakia to farm people who immigrated to Ohio, she worked all her working life at a bakery... After retiring she baked cakes for folks and was known around town as the "Cake Lady"... She would use the money she made from baking cakes for her only vice: Thursday Night BINGO at her church...

For a lady who was not well educated she had all the grace and class in the world...
