BS: I'm Gutted

I'm Gutted

Hiya,

The care home I go to for Respite Care – the one where part looks like a shared house – has rung up to say I can't live there because they need someone who wants nursing care (which I don't need). Nobody wants to go into Residential Care and to be honest neither did I but needs must.
I got on really well with the residents – a lot of whom shared my music taste – and most of the staff;   the staff were used to my needs because they'd seen worse.

There are 2 vacancies in another place under the same (very good) company. I know nothing about this new place apart from the fact it's smaller, nothing about the people, etc. and am worried there'll be nobody there I like and it may not be as good as the one I'm used to. I don't deal with change well at all.

I was sure I'd go to the one I'm used to; I was going to set up a group for talking about music, book John Otway and see a few more Steeleye gigs with the lads.

It was also suggested I become a storyteller for the less able there because I write (mostly fairy tales after growing up with Grimms', inspired by folk/blues; so there's a blacksmith who's a musician for a hobby and sings the Princess a blues song)

I was really looking forward to doing all that, too. I think I was actually MORE active there than I was when I wasn't!

After all that searching I/we are back to square one. I'm still going to the one I'm used to for Respite but how can I tell my friends who live there I won't be living there too?? & if I won't be living there I won't see them anymore; they can't type, E Mail, drive ….....

I'm gutted.

Claire, I'm sorry you're distressed, but change doesn't always mean 'worse'. In fact, there may be some absolutely lovely people at the new place, and you may be very glad you came to live there. Also, perhaps you can arrange some type of transport to visit your old friends? Try not to panic, and view this change calmly, I'm sure all will be well.

I agree with Eliza. Make the best of it and try to keep a positive attitude... it's all you CAN do right now.

Basically, it's good news that you will be among people who need less care - they will be healthier, stronger and more interested in enjoying life.

Can you arrange a visit to the new place to check out the atmosphere?

The really nice thing about new surroundings is that you will meet new people- and I have always found that there is nothing better than people. (There is nothing worse than people either but that's a separate story. :)

The best of luck to you.

Hiya,

> Basically, it's good news that you will be among people who need less care - they will be healthier, stronger and more interested in enjoying life.

But the other place had just re-assessed me and got what I needed right!

I need a lot myself – at least in places where people need more care, that care has a chance of being good; I was in one place where the people were more able and was basically left to do my own thing, along with a friend of mine who could do even less than me. All we did was watch rock DVDs while all the others complained.

Another place was shocking; no staff with a good grasp of English, no ceiling hoists, and I was severely told off by the manager about overworking the staff when I was one of the most able. It should be shut.

I'm told I won't go there, it's in my notes I can't stand it, but I am frightened to death I'll have to.

> Can you arrange a visit to the new place to check out the atmosphere?

Mum & Dad are having a look tomorrow, then if they think it's good, someone's coming to assess me on Tuesday.

If I can't find somebody I get on with, the problem's obviously with me. I always form a bond with someone in there, I even did in the place that should be shut. I think my music taste helps.

It's hard to have one's hopes dashed and plans quashed. I hope you will find a place that suits your needs and your interests. I wish you well, and I'll be looking for future posts.

Can you and your doctor come up with a reason you might need occasional nursing care? Continuity of care would be a big factor I would think...it is a dilemma...mg

Can you not go with mom and dad to have a look-see, get a tour? So you can assess for yourself.

Deep breaths. Control what you can; accept what you can't.
Expect to find some new friends at the new place - they are there waiting for you.
If it does not work out, your parents will help you find a better setting.
I too am sorry that you are so anxious about the move. And I sympathise - it can't be easy being moved about without being able to make the decision yourself.
Stay strong and positive.
And feel free to bitch here.
SINS

Hiya,

Thank you. When I was in the other unit (because there was no space in where I usually stay) I hated it.

It sounds as if you are in the UK. Is this so?
