"The Whippoorwill" composed by Don Raye.
On the cd "Keely Smith, The Essential Capitol Colection."

Don Raye (1909-1985) wrote for the Andrews Sisters and others; 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," House of Blue Lights," and other hits. He co-wrote "The Ballad of Thunder Road" with Robert Mitchum.

Lyrics not checked.

The Whippoorwill
Don Raye

Oh, let me tell the story, I can tell it all.
About the Whippoorwill who ran illegal alcohol
His daddy made the whiskey, the son he drove the load,
And when his engine roared,
They called the highway "Thunder Road."

Sometimes into Asheville, sometimes Memphis Town.
The revenuers chased him but they couldn't run him down.
Each time they thought they had him, his engine would explode,
And he drove by like they were standing still on Thunder Road.

Thunder, thunder, over Thunder Road.
Thonder was his engine and white lightning was his load.Moonshine, moonshine, to quench the Devil's thirst.
The law they never got him
Because the devil got him first.

Q, the lyrics at the paroles site are for the Ballad of Thunder Road with "Whippoorwill" substituted for "mountain boy". Keely Smith's "Whippoorwill" is a different song. Keely Smith - what a singer!

I'm wanting the version Keely sang. The haunting ballad. Not the Ballad of Thunder Road. I think she is still alive.80 years old.

Here are the Keely Smith words from 999's youtube link above.

Mick

THE WHIPPOORWILL

The night was young and so were we,
Beneath the old magnolia tree
And as you said "I love you so"
The whippoorwill sang sweet and low.

The moon was low, out hearts were high,
You said "I will, until I die"
And while we kissed beneath the tree
The whippoorwill sang happily.

Poor whippoorwill, the tree is bare.
He wonders still why you're not there

While all alone beneath the tree,
Where once you pledged your love to me,
My lonely heart cries out for you
The whippoorwill is crying too.
The whippoorwill is crying too.

Well. I just listened to Robert Mitchum's version and there is another verse. I can't quite make it out.

Thanks for the correction. The paroles site had the song headed "The Whippoorwill," so I assumed.....

It's been a struggle, but I've managed to make a MIDI file of the melody for the romantic song that 999 so kindly linked. It's a lovely little thing, nice for singing with the grandchildren. Timing it was a real bear.

I wish I could make a record of that lovely little flute part, but not in this lifetime...

I'll send it to Joe, and he can test his new FTP (forte-tenuto-piano) gadget for posting MIDIs. Watch this spot.

I'm going to change the key from Keely's B-flat (have you been smoking cigarettes, Keely?) to C.

THE WHIPPOORWILL

The night was young and so were we,
Beneath the old magnolia tree
And when you said "I love you so"
The whippoorwill sang sweet and low.

The moon was high, we lingered long,
The whippoorwill went wild with song.
But when you said that we must part,
He struck a note that broke his heart.

Poor whippoorwill, he had no choice -
You took away his lovely voice.

The leaves are brown, the blossom's dead,
They tumble down all round my head.
My lonely heart cries out for you
The whippoorwill is lonely too.

<instrumental>

Poor whippoorwill, he had no choice -
You took away his lovely voice.

The leaves are brown, the blossom's dead,
They tumble down all round my head.
My lonely heart cries out for you
The whippoorwill is lonely too.

Thank you so much. The melody has been stuck in my head for a couple of weeks now. I'm going to try to memorize all the verses.
I'm glad you like it too.

Glad to see this thread. Have enjoyed the comments and links. Interest in the film was stirred because my first car was a little ford just like the one in the movie, and I still remember the film, in part because of the music. While I would not call Robert Mitchum a great singer, it worked for me. Really liked his versions of The Whippoorwill and Thunder Road and really glad for the youtube links.

He was an adequate singer. I used to watch it every time it came on TV.
It was a Rockabilly movie I thought. Joe Maphis guitar. So many great scenes.
