08 Aug 12 - 04:15 PM (#3387739) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Solomon Brown (Paul Sirman) From: Joe Offer I listened to the YouTube recording and searched for a couple of key phrases, and had no luck. If you can transcribe the song and post it here for us, that would be a wonderful thing. I don't think you want an American like me trying to interpret what I hear. The melody is "Lakes of Pontchartrain." That much I know - but I can't understand many of the words. -Joe- |

09 Aug 12 - 01:21 PM (#3388038) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Solomon Brown (Paul Sirman) From: rumanci There may be a couple of stray words up for discussion Joe but here's the rest for now:- SOLOMON BROWNE (Paul Sirman) On the nineteenth of December in the year of '81 'Round the coast of Cornwall, a bitter storm begun. While fishing boats they ran for port to shelter from the storm The "Union Star" was foundering, her fate was known by none(?). The rugged coast of Cornwall is famed to those who sail, To fight the sea when the gales blow, many were due to fail. From Penlee Point the lifeboat came, her name was "Solomon Browne" From Mousehole came her gallant crew, these men of great renown. Four times they battled as the boats they ______ around To save all hands from the "Union Star" to suffer from running aground Four timely battles fought? but alas it was all in vain After 9:30 on that fateful night she was never heard from again. The memory of those gallant men will live for ever more The memory of that awful night will remain with those on shore. Eight men who fought the raging main to save those in distress Now we hold their pain, the suffering's gone, their souls are now at rest. |
09 Aug 12 - 01:31 PM (#3388042) Subject: ADD: Solomon Browne (Seth Lakeman) From: Joe Offer It may not be how it's spelled in the song(s), but I'll take the word of the Penlee Lifeboat Station itself and spell it Solomon Browne. There's also a song with this title on the Seth Lakeman album titled Poor Man's Heaven SOLOMON BROWNE (as sung by Seth Lakeman) At fair Mount's Bay, on that Christmas week Was such a raging storm, no man could speak That lifeboat thundered through an angry sea Was called Solomon Browne and her company With courage, it was called On our heroes brave and bold With courage, it was cold On board that night Now the stricken coaster called the Union Star Her maiden voyage, she never thought that far With Captain Moreton and his four man crew A woman to save and her daughters two Now, never had a lifeboat fought in vain She could have made a dash for port but she tried again All sixteen perished in that mighty wave It tossed them overboard into a watery grave With courage, it was called On our heroes brave and bold With courage, it was cold On board that night Now back at Penlee Point, time stood still Twelve young children cried for their fathers killed A nation shed tears for years as the news went round The constant courage of our Solomon Browne. With courage, it was called On our heroes brave and bold With courage, it was cold On board that night With courage, it was called On our heroes brave and bold With courage, it was cold from one of those Websites with all the popups: http://www.elyrics.net/read/s/seth-lakeman-lyrics/solomon-browne-lyrics.html |

I have seen somewhere a recording relating to the failed rescue, with the radio traffic overlaid. The moment when contact is lost stays in my mind and reduces me to tears. I expect it can all be found on U-tube or similar, but I can't do that right now. |
10 Aug 12 - 09:44 AM (#3388315) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Solomon Browne (Paul Sirman) From: Keith A of Hertford The radio traffic between ship and lifeboat is the most extraordinarily dramatic and tragic thing I have ever heard. After the helicopter is forced to give up and there is no hope, the skipper casually asks them to try and get his wife and daughters off, though they all know it it is almost certain death for the tiniest chance of life. The Penlee skipper calmly and casually agrees. It sounds as though they are arranging a lift to the shops. I expect the girls were listening and they were sparing them the hopelessness. My uncle was following it all. His son said that speaking of it was the only thing he had ever known make him cry. |
10 Aug 12 - 02:10 PM (#3388418) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Solomon Browne (Paul Sirman) From: Joe Offer Do I understand that these lifeboat stations are staffed entirely by volunteers and operate without government funding? -Joe- |
10 Aug 12 - 03:41 PM (#3388447) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Solomon Browne (Paul Sirman) From: Keith A of Hertford Yes Joe. It is funded by public subscription. They do not even claim salvage. They have refused offers by governments to nationalise them because then they would have to compete for their budget and risk "rationalisation" of their stations which is what happened to the Coastguard. |
10 Aug 12 - 04:23 PM (#3388458) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Solomon Browne (Paul Sirman) From: gnomad For Joe, and any other interested folks RNLI Website. Seeing the local lifeboat stations while on holiday in western Ireland, I wondered how they organised in that country. I was surprised but pleased to learn that the one organisation covers both countries. It does make sense to do it that way, but common-sense solutions frequently fail to prevail. |
