09 Aug 12 - 08:19 AM (#3387935) Subject: Lyr Add: Irish Music Hall song? O'Hare From: Jim Carroll Query from a neighbour. Does anybody know or know of an Irish song entitled 'O'Hare' which begins "You gents of Dublin City I'll have you to take care" and contains the line "there's not a thing that's happening ... O'Hare" I suspect it's a music hall/stage song, probably bawdy. Thanks in anticipation. Jim Carroll |

If your neighbour recalls any other lines please post them, svp. Most googles of o'hare and dublin city together bring up air travel and even searching with pieces of the song in quotations gives nowt. |

I've looked in at the Irish Traditional Music archive, so far with no luck, but will spend more time with it later. Our neighbour has a couple of verses, totally unfamiliar, but it's galvanised us into setting up a long planned recording session with him. He (Vincie Boyle) has already provided us with some songs for our CD of Clare singers, 'Around The Hills of Clare' and we know he has plenty more we have yet to record. Thanks again, Jim Carroll |

My indexes tell me the only O'Hare I have got songs about is Roger, the rake who hailed from Dublin. But the first line doesn't match any of the songs about him. I've got. |

09 Aug 12 - 07:26 PM (#3388161) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Irish Music Hall song? O'Hare From: Mick Pearce (MCP) I've looked at BL, LOC, Bodl, Levy, EBBS, archive.org (and google of course) without success. Also tried variants of gents/lads/boys/men. Roud returns mainly Roger O'Hare as Steve says. The problem with the first line is that it's open to lots of variants. Ye/You, gents/lads... Dublin/other city. We may have to wait for more of the song! Mick |

O'Hare From: Jim Dixon The Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads, on Harding B 40(7), has a song called A NEW SONG ON OLD HARE which begins "You gents of Dublin city have you heard the newest out …" Unfortunately, the link to the actual broadside image is broken. Here it is anyway, in case the link gets fixed: http://bodley24.bodley.ox.ac.uk/cgi-bin/acwwweng/ballads/image.pl?ref=Harding+B+40(7)&id=11471.gif&seq=1&size=1 |

O'Hare From: Jim Carroll Jim Eureka - that sounds exactly the one I'm looking for - "Old Hare" came up in the conversation with Vincie. Not sure how to negotiate the Bodlian site, but I should be able to record everything Vincie has of the song next week Thanks a million all!! Jim Carroll |

13 Aug 12 - 08:01 AM (#3389538) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Irish Music Hall song? O'Hare From: Mick Pearce (MCP) I've had a prompt reply back from Thaddeus Lipinski at the Bodleian about the problems with the Harding B40 series links: Thank you for pointing it out. We are investigating the reason and will get back to you soon. So with a bit of luck, Jim, you might be able to see the broadside soon. I'll post back here if I get a message to say it's available.
