I've noticed that Canadian TV is still using the old I Believe In The Power Of You And I song from the Canadian Olympics. While I don't normally object to grammatical errors in song lyrics if they're used for effect like, "It ain't no use to sit and wonder why Babe," or "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog," this one makes me wince each time I hear it. For a while I thought that I was the only one bothered by this, but I've heard others complain as well. I realise that "the power of me" wouldn't rhyme, but "the power of I" is just wrong and, though it might be OK for a pop song, for something that represents our country, it's embarrassing. |
