Who wrote this song?
I can't find it in the database, but these are the lyrics as sung by The Colours.

LITTLE BIRD
(Jerry Jeff Walker)

Little bird come sit upon my window sill.
Sat there through the falling rain.
As I watched that bird upon my window sill,
I saw my thoughts of you go by again.

refrain:
And the picture of my face reflected on the pane.
Is it tears I see or is it rain?

I remember how we talked before we said goodbye;
Too young to know the world outside our door.
And now the miles of time have built a wall my love,
And though I try I just can't tear it down.

No regrets about the past; there's nothing I can change.
Oh, life's a road we walk just one way down.
And looking back I do recall that frame of time
when the world was love and time was just a thought.

Many things go many ways. Your force of life is such.
We all must pick that road of life to walk.
And age gives off old memories like hand-notes in a log
where the world is time and love is just a thought.

As my thoughts go tumbling back I wonder how you look.
I wonder if you've seen that little bird.
I wonder if he sat upon your window sill.
I wonder if you'll ever hear these words.

I added the songwriter attribution above. -Joe Offer-

Thanks, Jeremiah. I must have heard him sing it, since I had that album. But his version still doesn't sound familiar to me. And the Colours' version did sound familiar when I heard it on an old archived radio show, though I can't remember that group at all. Funny how the memory works.

I was guessing maybe Townes Van Zandt as the author, but couldn't find any reference to it. It turns out I wasn't too far off.

Lyrics from JJW, Live at Gruene Hall:

Little bird come sit upon my window sill
Sat there thru the falling rain
As I watched that little bird upon my window sill
I saw my thoughts of you go by again

A picture of my face on the window pane
Is it tears I see or is it rain?

I remember how we talked before we said goodbye
Too young to notice the world outside our door
And how we laughed and said our love was free
Like birds that fly the winds
Well, the rainy day made me think of you once more

A picture of my face on the window pane
Is it tears I see or is it rain?

I have no regrets about the past I see how young we were
When our world was love and life was but a thought
Many things go many ways and many times but once
Till our lives have passed and that love is but a thought

A picture of my face on the window pane
Is it tears I see or is it rain?

So as the thoughts go tumblin' back
I wonder how you loved
Wonder if you've seen that little bird
I wonder if he sat upon your window sill
I wonder if you'll ever hear these words

And a picture of my face on the window pane
Is it tears I see or is it rain?

Thanks, these are the original lyrics from the "Mr Bojangles" album. More recent versions are somewhat different.
