any comrades from round these parts going to shrewsbury festival at the weekend? will be in the beer tent at -say- 2pm friday with a green shirt on and typical fifty-summat bloke shaved head, a bit of facial, and manageable beer belly - should anyone want to say hello or punch me.

Oh. Too late. Yes: I'll be there. Running a singaround at 17.30 on the Friday at the end of the beer tent so I'm bound to be in the beer tent on Friday afternoon. If you've got mobile Mudcat then I may well see you there :-) elsewise: where were you? I missed you!!

Oh: I may be wearing a cowboy hat.

Any chance that the BS could be taken off this thread by a friendly MudElf?

Would've said hello if I'd read this earlier.

What a great festival - loved every minute.

Yup. 'Twas excellent. New finds:
- Hat Fitz and Cara Robinson. Bluesy and gutsy;
- Rua Macmillan, lyrical and/or driving, blistering fiddle.
- the girl who won the open mic. Fabulous.
- Rosie Hood - last year's open mic winner and well worth her full booking. Enchanting.

But the old faves didn't let us down either. All brilliant and well done on keeping the rain to a minimum :-)

It was a great festival - as usual - one of the very best. Being a traditional person I particularly enjoyed Brian Peters. The rain tried but failed to spoil it, apart fom making a mess of the exit to the camping field, and I would like to express my thanks to the people who pushed my van out of the mud - apologies for getting you clarted up. Also, if he doesn't get in touch and happens to look here, the gentleman who asked about the Martyn Wyndham-Read song 'The Sailor home from the Sea'. He recorded it on Harry the Hawker is Dead (LP 1973), A Rose from the Bush (LP 1984) and Beneath a Southern Sky (FECD115 1997). Only the latter is still available.

Every time I try to watch the streaming video I just see a blank space where the picture should be, but I can hear the sound!
Cheers

Just back from Shrewsbury Festival....brilliant as ever. Wonderful village atmosphere. Met lots of people...always such a friendly event. Loved Fay Heild and the Hurricane Party............Show of Hands at their very best and the sound in the main tent was not over loud this year!Sweetback Sisters very fiesty and country. Enjoyed Brian Peter's lecture on Childe Ballards.
The Wilsons ...no festival should be without them!I seem to be following Vin Garbett around this year...on top form!
Always something for everyone reflecting the wide genre that is folk music!
Refolkus and the childrens festival second to none. Loved the trainer that went flying during rapper practice at Refolkus!Hope the young man sees this!(Sorry I am not of the age to join in!)
As you can see I am still on a high.....
Tuneworks for slow players always makes my day!
Counting the days to next year!

We went on the Sunday, especially to see Richard Thompson and Dervish. So what did they do? Scheduled them at the same time in tents that are at least 10 minutes apart. I was gutted.

RT was brilliant, though, and he played Beeswing before I had to hare across the dark camp sites to catch the end of the Dervish set.

I have no complaints as such - loads of great music and always something surprising - The Global Dance was amazing.

I have sent me form now but I think I would prefer some Psyc-Folk / Weird-Folk and less country +western

had a great time at this festival - particularly karine polwart, vin garbutt, session A9 and richard thompson on top form, as ever - (oooh! he's so fucking mighty, isn't he?) many thanks to whoever requested 'poor ditching boy' - long been a favourite of mine and have never seen it live before. anyone know what the song is where he goes on about northern wind...dreaming...running...street of molasses or something? nice one and new to me. great about the streaming gigs from the festival, though i have spent most of the last 2 days watching a circle go round and round and round.....

anyone know what the song is where he goes on about northern wind

Pete,

Possibly this one?

Q: "heard what seems to be a new song. A fragment of the lyrics: "northern winds will cut you, northern girls will gut you"

A: "It's a new song, I don't have a title or a recording plan for it yet."

i'm heading back to shrewsbury festival this week with fiona and our new lurcher 'rosa' anyone else going to be there? i must say i'm not very impressed with the line up this year so could anyone recommend anything i might not have heard before? i like a bit of bluegrass, americana or cajun - though the latter has been harder to come by in recent years. all the best - pete
