Noddy Holder and the Folk Tradition

These two songs from Pete Seeger and Slade share the same tune:-

Pete Seeger:Peg and Awl.

Slade: My oh my.

In fact, James Lea was an incredibly versatile musician who had studied classical fiddle, and the band went through a relatively unknown "folky" phase after the initial "Crayzee now" phase which is well worth exploring.

Perhaps a more likely source for the tune might have been "Were you there when they crucified my Lord."

One day it came to me , that Her Royal Majesty
Had never been heard to say a word about her favourite song
So I wrote and asked her who She rally like to listen to
And She told me Ease Me Squeeze Me Please me really turned her on

So now I wear a smile and dress up in the latest style
For I'm the man who made a Statue of Slade and sold it to The Queen

Dave Cartwright , 1973 ish !!!

Wel, I knew what the whole melody was going to be after hearing the first few notes, and I've never heard either of these recordings before. I think this tune has possibly been written many times in many places. I think I may have written it a couple of times.

Another one similar is "There's a man going round taking names".

Notwithstanding hearing Martin Carthy's excellent rendition of Cum on Feel the Noize on Imagined Village's Empire & Love album...

This tune is surely related to the great Admiral Benbow, Jack Hall, Wondrous Love family?

'Folk' music needs more singers with a voice like Noddy Holder's !!!

... and Suzi Quatro........

[neck to crotch zip up/down leather jumpsuits optional, but might get more folk coverage on TV..]
