"The Pope has rarely awarded red hats to Catholic leaders of any nation who dare to question traditional doctrine."

Well, there is light at the beginning of the tunnel.

The Guardian to-day has a piece about Latin being rigorously re-affirmed as the official language of the Catholic church.
There is a team specially charged with translating modern day terms into Latin. That is modern day terms such as 'hot pants'.
The late cardinal, IMO, talked a lot of sense.
I mean no disrespect whatsoever to the Catholic church or it's adherents.

When you truly believe in God/Jesus/ Holy Spirit.......... who cares whether you are a Cardinal/the Pope... or who????????? They are just humans. Christianity involves a relationship with God/Jesus/Holy Spirit..... full stop!........ If you don't get that then search for why???????

What has YOUR concept of "being a true Christian" got to do with whether Cardinal Martini made a needed point? You're simply preaching again......

There are two threads that are tied together, the other being "Who do you live your life for? ". Here are a few quotes that I have no idea who said them but I wrote them down because I believe in them.
1) For what is religion?
"Any deed done with good motivation is a religious act. On the other hand, a gathering in a church who do not have good motivation are not performing a religious act when they pray together."
2) "No man has ever yet lived out any life except his one chosen own. You choose to climb, the Gods chose to help you".
3) What is man?
"A man is someone who weeps, because he yearns to reach the heavens and can only touch the cover of God's book.
4) "God is still the judge and the devil still rules the earth."
5) And lastly;"Don't give any other human the right to dictate your spirit path".

As a practising Catholic, my main question for the Cardinal is why he thinks it is only 200 years behind the times. Intellectually, for example, I would say it has advanced very little since Aquinas (1274), and most of that was a restatement of earlier thinking. The problem with eternal truths is that it is so easy to forget that while the truth might remain constant your understanding of them should not.

It would certainly be a different church if Milan Archbishop Martini had been elected pope, and he was definitely a serious contender. Since Ambrose was archbishop of Milan in the 300s, Milan has run its own course in the Catholic Church, always healthily independent. Milan has always been an example of how the ancient principle of collegiality is supposed to work. The Catholic Church is not supposed to be an absolute monarchy. Unfortunately, too often it has been a papal dictatorship.

We are facing very scary times with one cardinal acting like he owns America ...he seems to me like a very bad man...read up on his statements or endorsement of statements concerning victims of ch of th==abuse. Read up on his financial shufflings. I sense evil in him..the worst of the worst is now running for pope, mixing himself way too much in politics, pandering where he can and bloviating where he can.

This is drift perhaps - but I would suspect strongly that, in time, the times we are living in will be seen very much as "the Dark Ages".

Slowly but surely the church is recognizing that they are in a role of spiritual leadership instead of secular power. Secular power went away for good in the middle of the 19th century - but the traditionalists still act as though their word is law.
I suppose the Catholics will be the last denomination to embrace the reformation - but the process in ongoing.

I suppose it's the same with the Catholic Church as it is with any other political organization. People tend to deify the organization, rather than respecting the individuals within it.
I get disgusted with the Catholic Church, and then I go to church on Sunday and have a wonderful time see all these wonderful people that's I've known for ten years. As long as I think about the people and look on the institution as just a framework in which these wonderful people can come together, it's OK.
I think that's an important lesson to learn about life - it's about the people, not about the ideologies and not about the institutions.

Our police have issued an international arrest warrant for a priest who is believed to have been involved in abuse of boys in a West London school, and who was supposed to be reporting regularly to a police station, but has ceased to do so and is not believed to be in the country any more. He is believed to have gone to Rome. If Rome, presumably the Italian police would deal with the matter, but I suspect the word Rome is meant to mean the Vatican, which would raise interesting questions.

Although the Vatican did establish an inquiry into the matter, if they are allowing a Rome monastery to offer asylum in the case, it doesn't convince that their heart is in correcting this issue.

3.52 is an attempt to introduce a new subject of the posters personal predjudice into a thread to induce comment. the subject of the thread being " a cardinal hits the mark" in my mind is a compliment to the cardinals courage to speak up for the churches move into the 20th century if not the 21st.
in 3.51 the comment of circus followed by paralympics is extremely bad taste. aka "Frakie Boyle"
I have worked in the area of disablements both physical and mental
and immediately found your comment offensive, shame on you.

Would you prefer Olympics?
One is as much a "circus" as the other....the use of the word "circus" is not an attempt to denigrate disabled people, a member of my own family was severely disabled.

"Gay marriage" is included, as it has become the greatest "distraction" at the present time.

My post was in response to Mr McGath, who remarked that future generations will possibly look back on the present day...as a "dark age"
I apologise for the slight drift, but am ashamed of nothing I post.

I find your lack of insight and interpretation skills, sad.

ake... add paralympics to gay marriage bashing? Yer really fucked up.

Crapping on the physically challenged? You outdid yerself in stunned as me arse there. That's fuckin cruel.

"Rome had circus's...we have paralympics and twitter."

it would be interesting to see how others interprate this .... your phrasing is most thoughtless and offensive. My insight into someone who post this type of totally thoughtless comment leaves me numb.

btw i am a big fan of Frankie Boyle as a performer not always his material, if he had made your comment onstage the media would have a field day.

as a fellow Scotsman i feel that the phrase "we are all Jock Tamsons bairns" hs not reached your neck of the wilderness.

I very rarely post on BS threads but in this case i have made an exception in total disgust

The fact that you deny your own words is pure bullshit... to wit...you said : "Gay marriage" is included, as it has become the greatest "distraction" at the present time."

That makes no sense. I find your lack of insight and interpretation skills, sad. You should be able to understand that most readers think you are an ignorant and intolerant asshole.

This country, and to a much lesser extent the US are now governed by the Media.
Get used to it and get ready for more "circus's" as our society disintegrates.
Your opinion of me or what I post here is of no interest, keep your pompous remarks to yourself. I have observed a lifetime of physical disability dealt with in the most impressive manner; what was lacking in physical ability was more than made up for in intellect and independence of spirit,
I once asked him how he managed to keep such a positive outlook, when life was such a struggle.......his answer was "Ah lad it's the "struggle" that's important".
I immediately understood what he meant and held him in the greatest respect untill the day he died.

The paralympics, would have seemed to him.....media exploitation.

Ake your post

"Rome had circus's...we have paralympics and twitter."

Wikipedia

A circus is a traveling company of performers that may include acrobats, clowns, trained animals, and other novelty acts.

Media circus is a colloquial metaphor, or idiom, describing a news event where the media coverage is perceived to be out of proportion to the event being covered, such as the number of reporters at the scene, the amount of news media published or broadcast, and the level of media hype. The term is meant to critique the media, usually negatively, by comparing it to a circus, and is considered an idiom as opposed to a literal observation. Usage of the term in this sense became common in the 1970s. [1][2]

a poster child for getting away with sexual abuse of young adult men and apparently underage victim (s?). His activities were very well known. I have known about trouble with seminarians for years. A group of priests I think went to the Vatican to explain what was going on. Make no excuses for this pope (I don't know if the group went to him or a predecessor). He done some awful things about the abuse situation, especially in Chili. Watch what happens with Pell if anything. Pell's abuse towards abuse survivors was well known and what does pope do but bring him to vatican where he is said to be #3. or was.

But I would have to go look it up.
