This song is about a man who has a brief fling with an American girl. |

Just before you get to Rockaway Beach from New York, you drive through an airfield that the was the beginning of many early Transatlantic flights - I don't remember the name of the airfield. Then the main highway goes parallel to the seashore, and there are a good number of side streets one or two blocks long between the highway and the seashore. After you leave "civilization," you arrive at Fire Island National Seashore. When you see the wilderness of Fire Island, it's hard to believe that New York City is just a few miles away. I walked through a beautiful dunes habitat to the Fire Island Lighthouse at sunset. I can't begin to describe how beautiful it was - and I think it was about a ten-minute drive from Rockaway Beach. -Joe- |

American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in neighboring Belle Harbor on November 12, 2001, killing all 260 people on board, and five on the ground. There's lots of air traffic over Rockaway Beach, but it's still a wonderful area. I believe that Rockaway Beach is part of Queens, a borough in the City of New York - but it's sure a long way from Manhattan. -Joe- |

The Ryan Center at the airport is a major visitor site at the airport and, if you ask real pretty, you can get a walk through the hangars where there is a collection of historic aircraft, including a B-17. The area is also the HQ for Gateway National Park, which covers the entire area from the Statue of Liberty through Battery Park through Staten Island through parts of the Rockaways. By the way, Joe, Long Island includes Brooklyn and Queens. |

Brooklyn and Queens don't really feel like Long Island to me. Similarly, I don't feel I'm on Cape Cod until I can see water on both sides of the highway. -Joe- |
