26 Sep 12 - 11:20 AM (#3410472) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: Bat Goddess He came a long way from Wall Lake, Iowa. I never missed a week of his 1960s TV show. And one of the bigger thrills of my life was having him sing into my eyes at an afternoon performance at the Wisconsin State Fair sometime in the '60s. I wore out my 45RPM copy of "Can't Get Used To Losing You" within a few months of buying it. Have quite a collection of 45s and LPs dating back to "Village of St. Bernadette" in 1960. Nothing past the late '60s, though, as my musical tastes (in purchases, at least) transitioned from jazz to Chicago blues, to classical to folk. Coincidentally, I just finished reading his autobiography, Moon River and Me, a couple months ago. I'll miss him. Linn |

26 Sep 12 - 02:19 PM (#3410564) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: catspaw49 Dude.....That was Claudine Longet, a cute little thing and possessor of the absolute sexiest voice on the planet. They were married as per this Wiki listing: Longet and Williams met in Las Vegas in 1960 when she was 18 and he was 32. Longet was experiencing problems with her car and had pulled over to the side of the road. Driving by, Williams stopped to offer assistance. She was the lead dancer of the Folies Bergère revue at the Tropicana Resort & Casino. They married on 15 December 1961 in Los Angeles,[4] and had three children: Noëlle (born on 24 September 1963), Christian (born on 15 April 1965), and Robert ("Bobby") (born on 1 August 1969). They legally separated in 1970[5] and divorced in January 1975.[6] According to Williams, they remained "very good friends".[7] That was also my reference to Spider Sabich above. She was divorced from Williams and was the girlfriend of skier Spider Sabich. Longet was arrested and charged with fatally shooting her boyfriend, Olympic skier Vladimir "Spider" Sabich, at his Aspen, Colorado, home on 21 March 1976. At her trial Longet said the gun discharged accidentally as Sabich was showing her how it worked. Williams publicly supported Longet throughout the trial, even escorting her to and from the courthouse. I remember arriving at a track early and waiting for the pits to open. We were all napping in the truck, listening to the radio and I woke up to her doing some ballad or another. I didn't know who it was but I sat up and said, "Geeziz, I'd fuck that voice!" The other three laughed their asses off and I heard that line over and over for years. Howard bought me an album for Christmas with a note saying, "The hole in the record is sorta' small but so are you." Spaw |

27 Sep 12 - 11:20 AM (#3410904) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: Stilly River Sage Moon River was certainly his first big hit. I didn't hurt Henry Mancini's career either to have it become such a popular ballad. He did quite a few movie songs. A Summer Place and Love Story, for example. He had a great tenor voice for these emotionally-packed love songs. SRS |
27 Sep 12 - 04:32 PM (#3411044) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: GUEST,Desi C My abiding memory of Andy Williams for what it's worth, is travelling through Sparkhill Birmingham in the late 60's, on the No 8 bus on a rainy windy evening, we stopped for 5 minutes at a rest stop for the driver, next to a semi detatched. Through the net curtains I saw my first colour TV picture, it was The Andy Williams show, on the screen was Mr Wiliams, in a bright yellow jacket against a sky blue background, I was transfixed! I have to admit that was the only real reason I started watching his shows. I can remember The Osmonds first appearance as young boys among many others. Ah well may he rest in showbiz peace |
27 Sep 12 - 05:45 PM (#3411071) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: GUEST,Stim I watched his show for years. Though he is famous for his Middle-of-the-road, easy listening singing style, a lot of folk and rock acts appeared on his show. Including the politically and socially edgy ones. When NBC brought his show back in 1968, his music director was Mike Post, who was one of the first rock musicians to be music director of a prime time network TV show. |

27 Sep 12 - 07:07 PM (#3411106) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: pdq "Moon River was certainly his first big hit." Odd, since he had hits in the 1950s and Andy William's version of "Moon River" was never released as a single. "Read in today's paper that he was a Republican." He was a friend and supporter of Bobby Kennedy and was in the hotel the night Bobby was shot. Also campaigned for Jack Kennedy and later on for McGovern. Shows how partisan and divided the country has become, especially in the last few years. "...in 1968, his music director was Mike Post, who was one of the first rock musicians to be music director of a prime time network TV show..." L. Michael Postil (dba Mike Post) is a classically-trained musician from the LA area who went directly to the inside of the Music Industry. He was not a rocker. Arranged the backup for Mason William's "Classical Gas" which aired on the Smothers Brothers show. Post is now considered the greatest ever in TV music. |

28 Sep 12 - 12:48 AM (#3411207) Subject: RE: Obit: Andy Williams - 1927 - 2012 From: longtimejoe I always liked his style. I played with the 'Young Americans' (36 singers) on his '64 Christmas special as a senior in high school & previously on another of his shows. That much I remember and I also recall him showing up to a rehearsal with a small entourage. I played my long neck Gariepy for one show, one of those or the Hollywood Palace w/ Sachmo & band, forgot which. I smiled and got a 5 second close-up shot. Big deal for me at the time; these days, well... |
