Tis the season for horror tales. What did you find in your food?
What did they do about it? Would you eat there again?

Hmm. Well, no really dramatic ones, Henry. I've had the unfortunate experience of ordering what turned out to be extremely mediocre food, badly cooked, way overcooked, or undercooked at:

1 Chinese restaurant in Penetanguishene - I never went back there.

1 Highway restaurant north of Orillia - Never went back there either.

1 place called the "Hasty Tasty" (Ha! Ha! Ha!)(one would be in haste to leave after tasting their food) Never went back.

And...hmmm...well, the worst cup of coffee I ever had was at Black Cat Fish and Chips in Toronto in the early 70's. Never went back. And they are STILL there, still in business to this day! Their survival seems to defy the very principles on which capitalism is based. It reminded me of the greasy diner where Dagwood eats in the comic "Blondie".

A friend & I stopped in a little town in Kansas for lunch one day...there were two small restaurants. We flipped a coin....we lost. He ordered fried chicken, I ordered a hot beef sandwich. We both took a bite and looked at each other. His chicken looked 3 days old and dried out...and not well plucked. My 'beef' was tough and full of gristle....and when I tried the mashed potatoes, there was this strange, but oddly familar flavor...I tasted it several times, trying to pin it down...until suddenly it hit me! Watermelon! It was like the gravy and/or potatoes had sat in the refrigerator under a drippy piece of watermelon. I tried to wash it down with iced tea....almost transparent tea with that 'tang' you get at 2½ days old. We left. Got a hamburger 30 minutes later.

Nothing like a cockroach in your cereal. I bit into a dead one in NYC. I still like cornflakes, but it turned me off 'roaches for good. Yuck!

I got served up a plate of rotten, spoiled barbequed ribs at a Po' Folks Restaurant in Snellville, Georgia.
Was served up a plate of Chinese food with the previous diner's napkin still stuck to the plate at the House of Joy Chinese Restaurant in Stone Mountain, Georgia
Had something like oven cleaner or something put into my Whopper at Burger King in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Had my hamburger spit in at Wendy's in Stone Mountain, Georgia
Don't eat out much anymore.

Had a cockroach walk across the table as my son and I sat down. When I pointed it out to the waitress, she said "I think they will give you a free meal" and left the roach. We left.

My housemate saw a woman have a Britney moment at a Chik Fil A at the mall. Changed her babies diaper on one of the tables. Yum!

I confess that I changed my son's diaper in a Wimpy's restaurant in Bremen, Germany - but I had him on the seat, not the table. Unfortunately, he sprayed while his diaper was off - and it hit the people in the next booth.
Now he's almost forty years old, and doesn't do that anymore. Well, no, come to think of it, he did get arrested a few years ago for urinating in public.

...and since this is a music forum, let's recall the experience Malvina Reynolds had at The New Restaurant

Did some electrical work in a restaurant/pub just off the Kings Road in Chelsea - frequented by TV stars
The chopping board for cutting meat was sited in the passageway between the bar and the kitchen.
Saw the governor carry a leg of ham from the fridge, sweep the cat, which was curled up on the board, aside and plonk the ham down and proceed to slice it up for sandwiches.
Quite put me off my ham sandwich

"urinating in public" ? Arrested? I should think if one has to go that badly, arrest is rather silly.

Been there, done that, released in the morning. No more Peel and St Catherine for me--a 'famous' intersection of two streets in Montreal. Three AM and who knew?

One summer in my college days I was a cook at an IHOP. They had a 20 gallon container of maple syrup that was used to fill a one gallon jug so the smaller syrup dispensers on each table could be filled. I was supposed to fill the gallon jug. I opened up the tap on the 20 gallon drum - and then forgot to go back and turn it off. Ever tried to mop up about 5 gallons of maple syrup? That floor was sticky for a week.

Here in Portland Maine recently, an inspection of 49 restaurants caused 39 of them to close due to sanitation. RATS! The Port Hole was one of them. It's located on the waterfront so Rats are quite common.

Such prejudice! Have you not seen the film "Ratatouile"? We rats appreciate fine dining just as much as anyone else does.

Dear Remi, this one doesn't involve rats.

Way back in the 70's we were at our favourite pub, & left the bar to go upstairs to the restaurant (ps. pub was in a very high class area)

Someone's yummy entree started out ok until they removed the first bit of food & found a stubbed out cigarette.

You can tell this was a long time ago as smoking was allowed in kitchens!

I can also remember sometime in the mid 70's when a friend's brother was a trainee Health Inspector for City of Sydney council (covering the CBD, the Harbour & entertainment areas) He said there were only a pitifully small number (3?, 5?) of perfectly clean restaurants in the area at that time.

No horror stories, as I have been lucky or just less observant.

But have been suspicious a couple of times about the species used in some food. I once ordered a chicken dish at a Vietnamese restraurant. There were bones, and did not look like any chicken bones I ever saw before or after. While it tasted good, I never did go back to the place.

I had an eggroll at a chinese place in Victoria BC a few years ago. I had excessive gas for four months after. Must have been some odd micro bug my innards never saw before that changed my digestive system for awhile. This "big time gas" kept me going back and forth to the airplane washroom on the 9 hour flight back home to eastern Canada. Not a good experience at all.

My mother ran a restaurant belonging to her brother who was in the hotel biz, which was v fashionable at the time (1950s-60s): Chez Cléo, Harrington Gardens off Gloucester Road in S Kensington. I lived at the hotel it was attached to in my army leaves and Cambridge vacations, so saw much of what went on there. Among regular customers were Diana Dors, The Marquis of Milford Haven, Gilbert Harding, Christopher Lee, Donald Sinden, Stirling Moss -- and David Blakeley, racing driver, and his girlfriend Ruth Ellis: she shot him in a jealous fit and went on to be the last woman ever hanged in UK, 13 July 1955!. I used to sing there most evenings, as I may have mentioned on other threads...

The point of this post is that most of the horror stories I could tell would concern the customers [not those named above, you appreciate; just a few in general], rather than the food or service!

Can't recall that much about Diana. She was always with her husband Dennis Hamilton, who died a few years later, generally with a lively party of friends. But in general they just got on with their dinner. Gilbert Harding once, after I had sung, invited me to his table for a glass of champagne ~~ I was quite a pretty young man, I suppose, & he a notorious gay, but he had his own current young man with him & I think he was just being polite & pleasant. He had noticed my Cambridge Christ's College blazer & he was a Queens' man himself. The only conversation with any of the above I remember in any detail is Christopher Lee once telling me in the bar that I should listen to more Wagner.

Didn't mean to drift the thread: sorry ~~ was just making the point about the customers being generally more complaint-worthy from the restaurateur's pov than the food or the service.
