26 Oct 99 - 06:59 PM (#128357) Subject: RE: someone must know somthing about BERT From: Micca I am sure in the Folk section of Virgin Oxford St early this year I saw re-issues of several of his early solo albums, and, of course, Paul Simon allegedly used some of his tunes/style/arrangements without attribution,along with stuff learned from John Renbourn, picked up in and around "Les Cousins" in the 60s, At least there were rumours to this effect among Folkies of the time. |

I saw him live once in 1967 or 1968 in a pub in Leicester Square (??Blue Posts??). He was so "tired and emotional" that his introductions were unintelligible and he kept faling off his stool, but his playing, even in that state, was amazing. The sleeve notes to the CD referred to above tell how he got a Brownie McGhee tune down note perfect after watching him play it once. I preferred his solo work to the Pentangle days. |

29 Oct 99 - 03:43 PM (#129576) Subject: RE: someone must know somthing about BERT From: John Wood Bert Jansch is the acoustic guitarist who has probably had more influence than anyone else in developing modern finger picking style.I first came acoss him around 1965 when his first solo album was released.The impact that album had in acoustic guitar circles was similar to the release a few years later of ``Sergent Pepper´´. This thread seems rather negative. Bert has made over 30 solo albums,plus several with John Rebourn,and together with ``THE PENTANGLE´´. There is a song book which came out in 1967;don't know if there are any more,though there probably is.The guy has written dozens of songs He is also still touring.....saw on his gig list that he'll be at the ``Celts In Kent´´Festival 14/15 Nov. 30 Oct 99 - 03:40 PM (#129891) Subject: RE: someone must know somthing about BERT From: Wee Ally I grew up in Edinburgh and we sort of took Jansch for granted in the '60s - he came from Glasgow originally (I think) but he performed regularly in Edin, mainly, in the early days, with John Renbourn, and later with Pentangle. His early stuff was brilliant - I still have a couple of his first LPs. He was influenced, of course, by Davy Graham, who is a real talent still. Last time I saw Jansch performing was about 5 years ago in Edinburgh. He still plays well but I was somewhat underwhelmed, and a bit disappointed as I'd been one of his greatest fans for the best part of 30 years. Over all this time he doesn't seem to have developed his style or technique at all - you'd think he'd have matured and brought out something different by now, but no - same old stuff. I still love the early recordings though. I used to sing and play quite a few of them when I played on the Scottish folk scene, and somewhere I've got a copy of the songbook. If the original author of this message thread is genuine (I'm a bit dubious due to the awful spelling etc - is it a 9-year-old? or just a dyslexic? And with a 'traverse' email address - surely an Edinburgh connection?) I'll look it out and try to copy some. Which songs are you interested in? |

Basically his guitar work is superb, but his singing voice is very gravelly - still OK for folk and blues though. As for music, there don't seem to be that many tabs around for his. Maybe when guitarists get to the level where they can work out serious stuff, they hoard their transcriptions instead of posting them? Grab. |

I saw him twice in 2004 in London, at the Jazz Cafe Camden and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and he gigs again regularly in many parts of the UK and Ireland. His playing is still superb and his singing voice is still compelling. He mixes new songs with the older ones that many people still need to hear. Most of all his presence is as relaxed, self-effacing and completely convincing on a personal level as it was when I first saw him in 1968. Most of his back catalogue is now available on CD. If you haven't heard his music before then get 'Dazzling Stranger' which is a 2CD compendium. His website at www.bertjansch.com is a good source of general info. His biography (also 'Dazzling Stranger') by Colin Harper is useful, but is a rather mixed effort based too much on back cuttings from the music press and doesn't do him justice. You'll find tabs for many of his songs on the web, but beware - most are wrong! Bert is extremely generous in including other musicians in his sets - but if only he would pass on his knowledge and style to the rest of us in some sort of recorded masterclass ...! |

I can play Soho and Anji (I skip the really tricky bit tho"!!! )well enough for public but not really the others yet. Actually his recent albums are superb, try "Edge of a dream", he's not just lugging around early successes, the new songs are just as memorable and singable. Saw him in Rickmansworth last year, great gig. |

There are several payment options for joining and one can get a fairly liberal number of free downloads to try out the site. Or go here Bert Jansch for Jansch recordings. The cost will be 99 cents per download. I assume both these sites have some means of paying performers. Perhaps someone else at Mudcat will have more information about that aspect. |

Well, there was no way out to the south through Somalia at the time. So he stayed at our house, rented by a group of Peace Corps volunteers, and entertained us with Bert Jansch songs instead of starving to death or selling his body to the occasional tourist. That's where I first heard "I Have No Time to Spend with You" and "The Needle of Death." Colin lost an ear that New Year's eve after a party where he inhaled an excessive amount of marijuana, falling into a freshly dug cess pool while muttering "What holeeeeee!" We were all vastly amused and I still have flashbacks to the ambulance drive up and down the narrow streets to the Russian Hospitol. We provided him a ticket home in exchange for his guitar.
