05 Oct 12 - 10:12 AM (#3414837) Subject: RE: BS: J-boy still looking for work. From: SINSULL Jason, There are lots of retail jobs opening at the mall. Grab one especially if it is part time. That way you have a job (always easier to find one while you are employed), have some income and can keep looking for something better. Some people here have second jobs part time at call centers and do really well - paid training, flexible hours so you can keep looking, and income. It took me five years to find a decent job with benefits but that's how I kept it going. Good luck. Just a thought - look at how you are job searching. Maybe you need to change your approach. Want ads are the worst way of looking. Half of them are people trying to see what their job is worth. Have you been to the local job centers? They offer help with your search. What exactly are you looking for (If your answer is "anything", you are on the wrong track). Write down specifics for your ideal position, what qualifies you for it, then a list of companies that can supply that position. Write cover letters specific to each company telling them why you need to meet. If you get an interview and do not get the job, be proactive. Write or call and ask how you can improve your interview skills and what training would make them reconsider you. Maine Med is hiring if you are willing to work odd hours. They train - no medical background required for many jobs and no college requirement. We know a woman who started part time was moved to full in a matter of months and has now been encouraged to apply for her pregnant boss's position. NEVER just walk in with a resume especially if you not dressed for an interview. They will trash your resume - it is totally unprofessional and shows contempt for the company where you are applying. Bring your resume on Saturday. maybe we can help you "perk it up". Mary |
05 Oct 12 - 10:46 AM (#3414863) Subject: RE: BS: J-boy still looking for work. From: Becca72 Mary beat me to it - Maine Med is hiring a wide variety of openings, many of which do not require medical background. (and I know the same woman Mary referenced :-) ) Also, keep in mind that in a month or two Bull Moose Music is opening a new store in Millcreek, just on the other side of the bridge and I would assume they will be hiring to staff it, if that's more your speed. |
05 Oct 12 - 11:20 AM (#3414888) Subject: RE: BS: J-boy still looking for work. From: jacqui.c I know a lot of the stores in the Mall are hiring. Beans are usually starting to take on seasonal employees and I know that some of the ladies from the homeless shelter managed to get there by bus from Portland last year. Even if it's not a permanent position it makes a resume look better than not being employed at all. |

06 Oct 12 - 10:18 PM (#3415714) Subject: RE: BS: J-boy still looking for work. From: Rapparee Most jobs are found not from ads but by networking. Ask your friends, have 20-second statement of what you can do ready, ask your relatives, ask your doctor, ask the cop who gives you a ticket. See if there is a job search help group in town, and ask yourself honestly if you would move if you had to. |
