Ike Harvey, landlord at The Rose Inn, West Langdon between 1900 and 1929 once sang a song with the line 'Jack jumped over the barn with a bundle of sticks'. This song was recalled by his grandson who was 5 or 6 years old at the time, but I don't know if it was a children's song or had a wider audience. Has anyone out there any clue as to what this might be? |

Perhaps it's because I live on the other side of the Pond. I thought you were talking about a songbook from Dover Publications, but then I thought it might be a song from the landlord of a pub in Dover. I searched my usual sources for 'Jack jumped over the barn with a bundle of sticks,' and came up with nothing. Please tell us more. -Joe- |

This is a project I've been working on for an article to be published on the Musical Traditions website about the Life and Songs of George Spicer (q.v.) who lived near Dover in Kent, England between 1928 and 1935. One of the hostelries he frequented was The Rose Inn, whose landlord sang the song in question. My previous queries from similar threadbare clues (e.g. the butcher and naked lady who turned out to be a murderess) bore fruit, as did a query about a song which I had as 'The Irish Lass' but was found on the Oxford University |Bodleian website by a correspondent. Two great countries separated by a common language, eh?! |
