Max, hope you'll let us know what comes of your letter. Could someone "blue clicky" this to the "Mudcat under Attack thread". Thanks.

Rick

Some of us can't read the original thread because it is too long. Can someone precis where things are now, for those of us with ancient machines?

Seems like PCs become 'oldies' about as fast as rock songs, Peter.

Yep, I've had this Mac Model IIfx since back in '93 (cough, cough), and apart from the crank falling out in warm weather, she can still go up a hill as long as everyone didn't have an extra piece of cherry pie at the social. Land sakes, wouldn't do to get rid of it now -- there must be a megabyte or two I could still squeeze out of it.....

Peter - I don't think it's age of machine, I think it is line conditions speed of modem etc. I can read the large threads at work, but on THE SAME MACHINE at home I cannot.

Nothing new. I sent them a letter saying we took the songs out of the DB (which we did) and that we are interested in negotiating and/or purchasing anything that will keep us out of trouble. Have not heard anything since. Will certainly let you know.

That IIfx is a truly excellent machine, Peter. A plateau of technology in its era. But if you want true delight and the thrill of the future under your wings, scrimp up for a DVD IMac, and watch your jaw drop. I've been told i is a truly wonderful machine.

Hello! New to the Cat BUT read the original thread. Can't (well, of course I can, but ... ) believe this junk. Here's some Visa. As per Clausewitz: "Money is the nerve of the war."

Thanks, Max. Keep up the fight.

Amos, I keep trying all the new Macs, but really, who needs it? Except for the memory problem I have here on Mudcat, which I shouldn't have -- I have a big memory -- but there is something else to blame for this I can't figure -- the same thing happens with the networking computer at the university which uses Netscape 3. as well.
I can type much faster than I can think already, and the faster I type, the stupider the things I write. What I need is something to slow me down, not speed me up. Of course, I can't use the chat room, so if everyone migrated there, I would be in trouble -- but I am not sure that is a speed problem, just a Mac incompatibility problem.

yours, Peter T.

Well, okay. If you're wanting network speed, I'd suggest a cable modem if you can float it, and upgrading to Netscape 4.7, OS 8.6 or 9. (well, not on the IIfx). Then you babble through cyberspace faster than a swollen little brook. But that would mean you would end up writing less. So never mind, I'd rather you use the time to write. Dunno what the NW computer at the college is doing for connectivity -- is it on a thinnet LAN feeding directly to a T1? Or what? I don't think it could be NS 3 itself bottlenecking you. Dunno for sure though.

peter; I sympathize. We have a mac 6500 and a G3. The G3 often won't hook up because the line speed is too slow for the modem. When either of us does hook up we often download at speeds of 250-400 bytes! The fault is the old rural copper lines which Telus will not upgrade, so when we are hooked up we just poke along and read a book while we download.

It is a mystery. The University of Toronto has bandwidth coming out of its ears. yours, Peter T.

Physical bandwidth can be defeated by firewalls, by session / network software that can't handle it, by local modem links bottlenecking, and by application or OS problems. NS 3.0 is slower than it's later versions, so you could try upgrading it. But I suspect you want to upgrade your OS if you can on the 68XXX platform. Or you could spring for a second hnd PPC.

Thanks Amos, but I think I am about at my limit already. System 7.5 is about as good as I can do, and I am just under the available RAM with Netscape 3. When I have tried 4, it is just too big, even with my virtual memory on. MAybe I could try System 8, and edge up. When I find a few hours (in the year 2525, if man is still alive....)
