October Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing

16 Oct 12 - 10:12 AM (#3420714)
Subject: October Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing
From: Bat Goddess

Our monthly sea shanty, forebitter, and ballad session will take place this Saturday, October 20th, at The Press Room on Daniel Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

Have it on reliable sources (Mudcat) that the peripatetic gnome (Micca) will be at the session along with Celtaddict and it will be truly wonderful to have him at The Press Room again. It's been so long...two whole months. (Setting a new record, Micca! TWICE in the same year!)

And Charley Noble has mentioned on another thread that he's bringing Mike Kennedy from western New York, volunteer at Mystic, who has adapted a couple C. Fox Smith poems to song.

Ernie Pigeon who has been missing in action for a few months (the months of schedules tight with gigs) has promised to be there as well. Would love to see some of the Gloucester crowd as well -- didn't get much time to talk during the Portsmouth Maritime Festival.

Hope we see the regulars AND the irregulars there! Total strangers welcome as well.

Linn-

Yes, I'll be there along with Mike Kennedy from Western New York. Mike has been a sound volunteer with the Mystic Sea Music Festival for decades. He also has adapted over two dozen C. Fox Smith poems for singing, and composed some excellent "traditional " songs himself.

Charley Noble

Sounds as if we're in for a great session -- maybe make up for the fact you missed the PMFF, Charley.

It's been a long time, Leo, and we'd love to see you back one of these days.

Every third Saturday of the month. Get here by 4 or 5 on Friday and you've got two sessions for the price of one.

Alas, I'm not in a position to offer a bed right now; life is still a bit complicated.

So...I hope Micca and Janet will be able to get to the Press Room session this afternoon (Friday) in time to get good seats. You may have to negotiate with our resident Scot for the seat next to me, but I'm hoping we can save (saving is usually complicated) the two other seats at the table.

See you later today!

So, Janet and Micca...session got REAL interesting after you left. (But not because you left!) I sang Richard Johnson's "Plum Island National Anthem" (about the island off Newburyport, MA) to the delight of a table of several couples who had just come in off the street. Turns out the birthday boy was a student of Tom's from Whittier Class of 1976, and he came over right after I finished.

So...when I post the playlist tomorrow, there will be a few songs missing when I was too engrossed in conversation.

And Puck, the plush octopus, got me introduced to an artist (whom I think was actually with this party) who quizzed me on the sidewalk about squid, cuttlefish and octopus when I went to the car to retrieve a couple of Tom's CDs.

More mañana...

Yes, about a dozen or so strong singers, lots of time to do songs, and remarkably, a few quiet moments in between songs. Nice to hear Diann lead "100 Days Out from Vancouver." I also like Ernie's new (to me) rendition of "Bully in the Alley."

Mike Kennedy was impressed with the high proportion of sea songs he hasn't heard before. The song circles sea music folks he runs into in Western New York generally lead more predictable traditional shanties. Mike lead "The Shellback's Song" by Ewan McColl which I haven't heard performed in years.

I was also "accosted" on the street (when I ran out to get a couple of Tom's CDs (of his 1986 tape "Bottle Full for the Shantyman") for his former student and friends) by an artist who quizzed me about Puck, the plush stuffed full of personality octopus Micca picked up for my cephalopod collection at the Mystic Aquarium -- named him after his giant Pacific octopus counterpart at the aquarium.

Incredibly enjoyable evening!

No, Micca -- the "Breakfast Shanty" is #18, which you sung just before you left. Mike sang one (#8) he told me was named named "Rambo Shanty" and that was the name I heard in it, but I wasn't sure so I asked him.

"Leave Her" was good; the onion rings were probably like that because it's nearly Halloween. Scary rings. Mordor rings.
"Leave Her" was the Friday nigh closing song for a loooong time, and my guess is people got a little over-exposed to it. I expect people healed from that, but those rings should come with a bottle of Lipitor or sumpin.

Nooooo...we thought once about six years ago or so that enough time had passed and we might revive "Leave Her, Johnny" for the closer at the shanty session...

No.

It's too bad, but it still resonates with some of us.

The timeframe of the original offense was, believe it or not, in the late '80s...maybe into the very early '90s. One of the problems is that no matter what key it was started in, it was unsingable for SOMEbody. And it always went on too long. And not only did we get sick to death of it, but the waitstaff hated it, too. If it ever became a habit, I think the nude over the bar would come over and smash over the singer's head.

It's okay, Don. Once every five or six years is probably do-able without making us wimper in corners or run screaming.

I am arriving late in this thread, but I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the time! We hated to be bouncing in and out, as a result of trying to be several places at once. We did get to have dinner with Kendall and Jacqui, TruBrit and Tom, and Sinsull. `Both Friday and Saturday were most enjoyable, and a trip north to New Hampshire and Maine is always a pleasure.

Love to see a better one of Mike, and I'm sure he would like to see one too.

Mike finally made it back to Western New York State about midnight. Because of the storm he was forced to stay with us another 4 days. But we managed to record about 20 tracks and even edit 5 of them.
