One of the odd coincidences in my life is that I recall, as an early teenager, watching the film "Jazz on a Summer's Day" many, many years ago. This showed the Newport Jazz festival (1958?) against a background of the America's Cup trials in Rhode Island. The immediate effect was to give me a lifelong love of jazz - which still continues. It took nearly twenty years for the sailing to impact on me - but the final outcome was the same... |

Boy, I have never seen anything with sails move so fast! Clearly sailing them - and particularly the big ones which will contest the America's cup - is a completely different order of magnitude from sailing a monohull. And the solid wings (not sails) that power them are complex and difficult to trim right. I look forward to the series: there will be some unforgettable spectacles in San Francisco when that happens! |
