BS: America Cup Races Upset 2013

Yes, it's a little early to talk about "an upset" in these races but the race trials have already begun. Just see what our defending Oracle team in San Francisco has accomplished: Click here for report!

It's the kind of result that would make yachting teams all over the world green with envy!

Spaw-

So true. But there is a flip-side to the catamaran hull that I find of interest.

Flip-side is right...

More seriously, it sounds to me as though some people would prefer to turn the whole thing into a computer game rather than have real people racing real boats on real water! ;>)>

p.s. One of the odd coincidences in my life is that I recall, as an early teenager, watching the film "Jazz on a Summer's Day" many, many years ago. This showed the Newport Jazz festival (1958?) against a background of the America's Cup trials in Rhode Island. The immediate effect was to give me a lifelong love of jazz - which still continues. It took nearly twenty years for the sailing to impact on me - but the final outcome was the same...

And that's why smart sailors wear PFD's.

As it happens, I was out on the water in San Francisco Bay when one of the smaller match-racing cats was out. Boy, I have never seen anything with sails move so fast!

Clearly sailing them - and particularly the big ones which will contest the America's cup - is a completely different order of magnitude from sailing a monohull. And the solid wings (not sails) that power them are complex and difficult to trim right.

I look forward to the series: there will be some unforgettable spectacles in San Francisco when that happens!

Fossil-

I do look with interest on this new sail technology. There may be a new nautical disaster ballad to harvest!

It seems like a spending orgy to me. What does it cost to sponsor a winning team? A hundred million? It depresses me to know that things like this exist.

I was really hoping that the races would move to Newport for this series. At least it's in an accessible time zone for those of us in the Western Hemisphere who wish to watch it live..
