Surprised no one has posted this yet. A politician with some principles, and some one I have always admired. An Unabashed Liberal

The first vote I ever cast was for McGovern in 1972.

"I'm sick and tired of old men sending young men to die in war." (paraphrase)

George McGovern was a deciding factor in my switch from Republican to Non-Partisan. I've never understood how he became an almost forgotten statesman. RIP, Mr. McGovern.

I posted this to my Facebook page this morning:

RIP George McGovern, dead at 90. My first vote for president - scholar, statesman, anti-hunger and peace activist, war hero. He went skydiving on his 88th b'day. Caricatured in shameful fashion since he was trounced by Richard Nixon. There's a full obit of this complex man in the NY Times, but here's a picture of a lesser known McGovern.

Not really forgotten, Ebbie, and always engaged and working for the common good.

His Presidential Medal of Freedom was well earned.

Mr. McGovern was years before his time. I always believe our purpose in life to enrich the lives of others, stand firm on your principles and contribute to the cause of freedom and liberty. He did all this and more. America lost a great man today, celebrate the fact you were fortunate enough to have lived in his time.

God be kind to his soul.

A man of morals, intergrity, and intelligence. He has been, and will be, sorely missed.

(I can also recommend his book "The Great Coalfield War" which never got the readership it deserved.)

Yeah... Nixon worked out just great. I was 12 and I could not fathom why it happened... until some years later.

RIP

He meant a lot to a lot of people... He got MY vote, and his legacy of "It IS possible to be an honest, caring politician" will live on.

Like Janie, McGovern was the first presidential candidate I voted for. I was under 21 in '68; the voting age was lowered to 18 in '70. So at 21 I voted alongside 18-, 19-, and 20-year olds who were all voting in their first presidential election. And in spite of the age change for voters, he still lost by a landslide!

As one of the very newly enfranchised young voters, I ran as a McGovern delegate (along with Mom--one of a few "family acts" that year). At a rally in Columbia, MD, Bill and Taffy Danoff (still married, and well before "Afternoon Delight") sang "Country Roads" as part of the program.

One of the last great Dems, he was actually from "the Democratic wing of the Democratic party." RIP, indeed!

Of all the people who have run for President in my lifetime, George McGovern was the finest. May he find peace and good will in the next life.

The best man doesn't always win.

In my experience of 65+ years, the best man almost never wins. That's the U.S. boobocracy for ya.

Per Mark Twain,(January, 1904) the U.S has been consistently:

"a nation which has usually not been willing to have a chief magistrate of gold when it could get one of tin."

Well said, Joe. He is known and remembered in the eye of the general public for his presidential runs. But he lived a life that was not just principled, it was effective. That would have been the case had none of us in the general public ever heard of him.
