Hallowe'en Songs 'self promotion'

As a change from the usual song suggestion threads, I thought it might be fun to have a Hallowe'en thread for singers, musicians and writers on MC.

Do you have a YouTube, MySpace or SoundCloud, or another site to host your stuff?

Please post seasonally appropriate links to your stuff, whether you sing, play or write, or all three.

Go on!

PS - when I say links, I don'y just mean a lazy link to your whole site, I mean a link to specific songs and tunes relevant to Hallowe'en! A Mudcat Hallowe'en singaround.

PPS!

OR - if you're not a music maker or don't have your own site, please post links to music and songs appropriate to Hallowe'en, that you love. Now if I'd stopped to think what I wanted to say, I could have done it all in the OP instead of three separate posts.. eh oh.

CS - Can we have some of your singing here too please? Or maybe I'll dig out our Child Roland session??

Though this song is probably relevant throughout the entire year, not just during the Halloween season, it nevertheless comes to mind each year at the end of October, due to the scary nature of this character and the propensity of devilish creatures lurking about during this celebration. The Devil

Here's one more.

The Third Story Of The Sawmill by The Infected Termite Ensemble

In honor of the spirits that we recognize on this day, I thought you might be willing to give ear to one of the most frightening interludes of recorded audio that I've ever heard. It was captured 'live', as field recording. This recording is based on a 30" Mussehl & Westphal musical saw being bowed in its third harmonic octave.

When heard without the digital enhancement applied to this passage, via sound guru Phil Erb, the sound created in this demonstration is rather high pitched. It is, in fact, too high for many to consider it a pleasant listening experience. However, Phil's genius allowed him to discover and reveal what, most definitely, are the spirits within, enabling their true nature to be heard and felt by others. Without a doubt, this is evidence as to why some listeners find the exercising of this curious musical folk art such a truly disturbing experience.

WARNING!

Listen if you dare, but be forewarned, this is not something for the faint of heart. This is very, Very Real! This sound file was not digitally manipulated into existence via some sound studio. Phil merely digitally splayed what was acoustically played and recorded 'live'.

Many claim to be able to record otherworldly creatures dwelling among us via video, still images, and/or audio devices. There are lots of TV shows, with camera crews creeping through darkened rooms, hunting spirits, ghosts and things that go bump in the night. From what I've seen of these, it's just a bunch of bad acting, without any actual proof being offered to viewers.

I have no doubt, whatsoever, that what Phil actually documented in this recording is proof, beyond any shadow, as to the evidence of their existence. The existence of what? Call them what you will, spirits, ghosts, demons, but whatever you call them, know that, to pretend that they don't exist is a mistake.

It is said that the eyes are the windows to one's soul but know that, the ears are the pathway to one's heart. Know then, that what lurks within this anti-melodic sound file will chill your bones, make your blood run cold and set your heart to pounding!

Do not listen to this audio file while under the influence of excessive alcohol consumption, herbal and/or chemical inhalants, illegal narcotics and/or over the counter medications that might leave you in an altered state of awareness. Do not listen to this file alone! Should something untoward happen while listening to this file, dial 911 and seek immediate medical assistance!

By listening to this file you agree to hold the person who posted it blameless, regarding any hazardous and/or detrimental consequences which might arise as a result of your exposure to it.

So, you might ask, if exposure to this file could cause harm to those listening to it, why post this here? Why risk it? I post this file as proof that, though we may not be aware of the reality of their existence, in fact, these creatures do exist all around us. They are able to make themselves heard in ways that we are not yet able to fully comprehend.

Lest any of you imagine that I'm making this up, as some kind of Halloween trick or treat stunt. Know this. The shocking truth of the matter is, I am the one that Phil recorded! I, therefore, do solemnly swear as to the validity of the content of this sound file.

In closing, I would urge each and every one of you to tread lightly on your path through this life, so as not to disturb those spirits that live side by side with us in this journey.

This recording is dedicated to the digital sound artist that made this discovery, Phil Erb, who tragically took his life in early December of 2011.

We did a song for a Swedish compilation called WEREWOLF SONGS a few months back to which you can listen (with a few others) courtesy of The Wire magazine.

Ours is, appropriately, called WINTER : WEREWOLF and we made it ourselves from buts of skin and bone we found lying around the hedges in the bleak hinterlands of Blackpools industrial heartland near where the old TVR factory still stands... deserted... under the howling moon...

Link above seems dead ATM Blandiver, if you haven't taken it down then you might want to have a look? Enjoying your other Werewolf submission though. Any lyrics to go with that?

If you mean Child Owlette (I think you do) go ahead and dig out!

Lunar Samhain last night BTW, also meaning the New Moon in Scorpio.
Thanks to everyone for submitting a song or two for this Mudcat Hallowe'en singaround thread, always good to put a song to a forum ID. I think we should do one for Xmas now!

Nothing y'all haven't seen before, but I wrote this song (which Amos kindly videoed for me at a Getaway concert a few years back -- that's he, singing along on the choruses while holding the camera) for a Samhain ritual. Plus, it's adapted from some verses in the Egyptian Book of the Dead...can't get much Halloweenier than that. I call it "The Rowing Song."

Yeah, CS - I dropped it off to make room for some other stuff - I'm especially happy with this:

http://soundcloud.com/sedayne/dark-matter-1-11-12

*

Here's the werewolf words:

WINTER : WEREWOLF (FEVERED PRAYER)

I run by tooth and claw;
Eyes sharper yet to thee - tree-shattered moon.
I ache in bone and fur:
Heart brighter yet to thee - blood-reddened snow.

There is no grief, no cause,
No human cry can soothe or hold my rage.
For all is life and self;
No-one but I this night will run so wild.

My tracks, my signs, my kills,
Are feathers ripped by hedge and ditch and wall -
My claw cuts deep in bone;
A glimpse, no more, where I once danced alone.

There is no truth, nor God;
No fevered prayer by candle in the cold.
But all is death and I
That joins the morning grief as yet untold.

GUEST,CS -- Mudcat frowns on duplicating lyrics that exist elsewhere on the forum (space is not infinite on those servers, you know), and mine do so I'd rather not post them here. But here's a link to them.

I see that I have changed the chorus a teensy bit since posting those lyrics. The last line now goes "Row death's son and row death's daughter." It's easier to sing that way.

Cheers,
Claire

"(space is not infinite on those servers, you know),"

Really? I'd doubt that the occasional, duplicated lyric would tax the server any, when considering the vast volume of non-music discussions which continue incessantly below the line every day.

Thanks for the link by the way! But it's a pity that MC "frowns" on lyric duplication when opinion duplication is allowed to run riot.

Mudcat frowns

Yup! I guess that about sums it up.

Anyhoo, I'm taking this opportunity to duplicate a song I posted on a Hallowe'en Songs thread back in 2007.

SEVEN YEARS OLD

The scariest story that's ever been told,
is about the wee boy, only seven years old;
for he never got hungry for reasons untold;
and he never got tired, or even grew cold;
but he stayed, all forever, only seven years old.

He was seven years old when their house was a new-un;
he was seven years old when it fell into ruin.
He was seven years old was Robert was ten;
he was seven years old when Bob was an old man.

He was seven years old when Sonia was born,
and seven years old when her vows they were sworn;
he was seven years old when Ruth came along;
he was seven years old when poor Ruth was undone.

He was seven years old when Ruth had Melissa;
and seven years old when Melissa had Tricia.
He was seven years old when Trish killed the old clown;
and he was seven years old when they sent Tricia down.

He was seven years old when his parents were hale,
he was seven years old when they grew old and frail.
He was seven years old when at last they turned grey;
he was seven years old when they lay in the clay.

He was seven years old when he saw the seed fall;
he was seven years old when the tree grew up tall;
he was seven years old when the tree touched the sky;
he was seven years old when it rotted and died.

He was seven years old when there were plenty about;
he was seven years old when there was no-one in sight.
He was seven years old when the earth it was young;
he was seven years old when it crashed into the sun.

He was seven years old when it came to an end.
He was seven years old when it started again.

(Miss Jenifer Underwood, aged 13, Jesmond, Newcastle, December 1976. To be sung to the tune of Long Lankin. With sincere apologies to Edward Gorey...)

GUEST,CS

Since you asked, there is a longer explanation as to why we try not to duplicate lyrics, and it has to do with the fact that the forum is harvested for lyrics that are posted to the Mudcat lyrics database. Duplicate posts of lyrics mean potential duplicate entries in the database, or at least more work for our harvesters in determining whether or not to harvest lyrics from a given thread. Why put our steadfast volunteer workforce through that when it's so easy to put in a link to where the lyrics already exist in the forum?

Clicking on FAQ in the top bar provides access to all kinds of fascinating information on how this place works, and why, including the above.

Cheers
Claire

I've been posting traditional songs & variants here for years and I've never seen any evidence of harvesting, let alone of a 'steadfast volunteer workforce' other than a secret inner cult of hand-picked CSOs who remove legitimate 'folklore' prefixes from subjects they consider unworthy (for reasons best known to themselves), or else bounce threads below the line that really belong above it, and otherwise operate to suppress truly free-speech. Indeed, many worthy contributers to this forum have left for that very reason.

In particular there was WAV's epic The re-Imagined Village thread. This was Mudcat at its very best, replete with music, folklore and more craic that a lorryload of lechrechauns, but bounced below (after some considerable time above) by Pope Joe for reasons which he refused to disclose. Rule Number One : Thou Shalt Not Discuss Mudcat Policy on Open Forum. As a Humanist, Atheist and an Anarchist I find such crypto-fascistic absolutism utterly irksome & contrary to the cherished freedoms we should, all of us, hold so dear.

But Mudcat is plain weird like that; it distills the essence of folkish religiosity and serves it up as an internet cult (complete with threats of Apocalypse) in which sheepish sycophancy to the Godhead (and His infallible representative on earth) is positively bewildering. Likewise the complete lack of anything so much as resembling Transparancy which otherwise redoubtable 'Catters generally feel secure with. Bizarre! Thankfully, there is enough human, fringe, feral and genuinely folkloric comings & goings here to keep me interested. But only just...
