21 Oct 12 - 11:27 PM (#3423932) Subject: Sunny Camp Revue From: Fred Maslan A big thank you to Mary and Alice for a great weekend.It was a small group, maybe eighteen tops, though people were coming and going all the time. The singing started on arrival on Friday and continued through noon on Sunday. The weather was, well, typical for the Washington coast at this time of year, at times rainy and cold and ten minutes later sunny and mild. The cabins were Spartan, barely sound enough to keep the wind out. But the lodge though small had a lovely fireplace and wonderful acoustics.Everyone pitched in with the food, which was excellent, and cleanup. Looking forward to next year Fred |

22 Oct 12 - 01:17 PM (#3424238) Subject: RE: Sunny Camp Revue From: GUEST,mg Glad I only had to drive 10 miles home...that is what makes it doable...plus a nice general store only two miles away if we forgot something...I think we might have had 25 people in total, but not all at the same time..several last-minute cancellations. I enjoy the smaller groups because logistics are much easier and also musically you miss out on the great large choruses but you also get small quartets or duos that you would not hear with a larger group. Some great Sunday afternoon singing after most people had left...cabins...mine was so much warmer than my cabin at home..perhaps because Sunnycamp cabins on bay side rather than ocean side..I just might move into one for the winter...and share it with the friendly woodland creatures...mg |

22 Oct 12 - 06:10 PM (#3424397) Subject: RE: Sunny Camp Revue From: GUEST,mg I would like to hear from people who might consider coming next year what weekends work..it pretty much has to be early in October and the second weekend is pretty much out for me if it is the same weekend as a girl's camp I volunteer at. We hit the Jewish holidays if we have it too early, we hit bad weather if it is too late. The first weekend is not good for people who attend the Getaway. Second weekend conflicts with a sea shanty event and I am tied up then anyway. Some of us attend the B.C. camp in late September...Last weekend in October is out due to almost certain bad weather. I guess that leaves the first (entire) weekend in October or the third weekend in October. We might have to play it by ear depending on various factors. I don't think it will ever be in September...mg |

The Jewish holidays are relatively early next year--Yom Kippur is Sept. 13-14. --Charlie Baum, who'd love to be able to come, but is always busy as one of the organizers of the Getaway at that time of the year (and the weekends before and after are often taken up by Getaway preparation and follow-up duties)--not to mention that it's a long, long way away from the East Coast Washington (DC). |

That means there would be 4 full weekends in September 2013: Sept. 6-8 " 13-15 (Yom Kippur is Sept. 13-14) " 20-22 " 27-29 Since FSGW Getaway 2013 is in October, that leaves 3 September weekends, when the name "Sunny Camp" is much more likely to be apt than any weekend in October, I'm guessing. (At least the rain would probably be warmer.) This may not work for all years, but I think a weekend in September would be the best bet for 2013. |

23 Oct 12 - 04:09 AM (#3424605) Subject: RE: Sunny Camp Revue From: Genie Anyway, I'm glad I was able to come for a while this year (from dinner time Sat. through noon on Sunday) - although it was a LOT of driving on Saturday. (If we do the camp again this late in the year, I strongly suggest people bring space heaters and that we use a couple in the lodge too. It gets pretty chilly if you're not close to the fireplace.) The salmon and chicken and desserts, etc., were wonderful, and I really enjoyed the small (11-act?) concert and the group singing on Sunday morning. Wish I could have stayed longer but I had to get back to Portland Sunday afternoon. Let's work on a lot more and earlier promo for 2013. I think we can attract quite a few more from Portland and Vancouver (WA) and maybe from Astoria too (as well as the other Washingtonians). |

24 Oct 12 - 01:34 PM (#3425471) Subject: RE: Sunny Camp Revue From: GUEST,mg It is a 4H camp and I think it is pretty much used for that through Sept..which is a bad month for me anyway and I do try to go to Camp A in B.C. around the 3rd weekend...middle of october weather turns bad here, which it has...beginning usually quite nice..so it will probably be the first weekend in October unless something comes up for me...I just can't take every other event into consideration....and we will use the 3rd weekend as a backup...weather should be good first weekend and it shouldn't be too cold...I am going to take them to task for some maintenance issues...they put on good programs there but some very basic maintenance is not being done..mg |

(I think it'd be worth inquiring about Sept. 27-29, though, just in case.) The main maintenance issue I'd mention is that there's a small leak in the roof of at least one of the cabins. (It would be really nice if there was at least one Porta-Potty over by the cabins, since the restrooms/showers are quite some distance away for someone who needs to 'recycle some coffee or tea' in the middle of the night in the pouring rain.) |
