30 Oct 12 - 05:26 PM (#3428546) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song Where the Allow River Flows From: GUEST,leeneia I did a little checking, Jim, and I found that the river that flows through Cork is called the Lee in English and An Laoi in Irish. But I couldn't find a song about the An Laoi or the Anlow. All I did was learn a little geography. |

01 Nov 12 - 12:02 AM (#3429175) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song Where the Allow River Flows From: Artful Codger The tune seems to be one of those warhorses recycled ad nauseam, though the name of a classic example isn't coming to mind. "Van Dieman's Land", maybe? All I know is that, having heard the first half of the first line, I gave a sigh of recognition: "Spare us!" The saving grace was O'Dwyer's voice--remarkable--though I personally would have preferred to hear her without the ambient Enyatronics. |

01 Nov 12 - 04:03 AM (#3429207) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song Where the Allow River Flows From: Jim Carroll Art: "The tune seems to be one of those warhorses" Have to confess that I quite like the tune, no matter how many times it's been used; I associate it with Dobbin's Flowery Vale. The song itself is not usually the type I'd break my neck to search out, but again, I found enough detail in it to hold my attention. I agree entirely with you about the electronic wallpaper that the singer is singing against, which for me, only serves (as a negative example) to emphasise how beautiful the solo, unaccompanied voice can be, especially one like Ms O'Dwyer's. Anyway, I have no doubt I shall be hearing the song regularly as the enquirer is a local publican where our regular music/singing session happens every Wednesday - now I only have to find her 'The Jogger From Clare' to win my free pint - cheers all! 27 Sep 19 - 06:40 AM (#4010768) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Where the Allow Waters Flow From: Richard Mellish I was unaware of this singer until seeing this revived thread today. I don't mind the accompaniment on that title track on YouTube, as it's very low in pitch so doesn't mask the words. So I went looking for the CD to find it's unavailable (except one secondhand copy on Amazon at a ridiculous price). But it is available to download from here, where you can listen to a short sample of each track. Having listened to a few of them, however, I now can only agree with Jim: lovely singer, shame about the accompaniment. |
27 Sep 19 - 12:24 PM (#4010812) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Where the Allow Waters Flow From: leeneia Guys, when a person with no money wants to make music today, s/he turns to an electronic keyboard. That's what Elle has done here, and the music is fine. I'm pleased, as well, with how many words I can understand. One hundred years ago, such a person turned to a penny whistle or a cheap fiddle, and y'all fall down and worship the authenticity. Your snobbery is another form of The Great You Shut Up. |

01 Oct 19 - 01:57 AM (#4011314) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Where the Allow Waters Flow From: leeneia Here's a rough draft of the lyrics. Town names are uncertain. Allow rhymes with fallow. Verse 3 seems to be about a sport. What is it? O now tonight, my comrades bright, come listen to my tale of bygone days in memories haze of greenmounts (?) lovely days oh the the friends so true that we once knew as to manhood we did grow as we wandered free over hill and lea where the Allow waters flow. 2 at welship (?) cross we would pitch and toss till the twilight hours - ?? and with moonlight gleams over joyful streams we would homeward wind our way as with colleens fair beyond compare a-wandering we would go [words in Irish] where the Allow waters flow 3. from Terence Cross to Knockanglas we oft-times made our way sweet Roscommon to Morton's Lawn, all eager for the fray with skill and dash we would heave the ash as we struggled with each foe. with might and grace for our native place where the Allow Waters flow. 4. [Verse is half Irish, half English. Didn't transcribe] 5.But now, asthore, we see no those golden days of of youth and when, alas, my soul shall pass unto the land the truth on the chapel hill just lay me still over freemounts (?) town below so I can still can hear both loud and clear, those Allow waters flow. =========== See Joe Offer's post of Nov 1, 2012 for a blue clicky to the recording I got these words from. |

It's nothing to do with one accompanying instrument being more or less authentic than another. It's whether the accompaniment enhances or degrades the overall experience of hearing the song (a subject much discussed on some other threads). If the accompaniment prevents me from hearing all the words clearly that is a big negative for me. There are some situations where the overall musical sound is more important than understanding all the words (e.g. much of opera) but this isn't one of them. Other listeners are of course fully entitled to their own opinions. |
04 Oct 19 - 12:43 PM (#4011914) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Where the Allow Waters Flow From: leeneia Nice try, Richard. But comments like "Enyatronics" and "electric wallpaper" are meant simply to be snide. Not everybody has a handful of talented friends to produce acoustic accompaniments. |
