But I couldn't find a song about the An Laoi or the Anlow. All I did was learn a little geography. |

"Van Dieman's Land", maybe? All I know is that, having heard the first half of the first line, I gave a sigh of recognition: "Spare us!" The saving grace was O'Dwyer's voice--remarkable--though I personally would have preferred to hear her without the ambient Enyatronics. |

The song itself is not usually the type I'd break my neck to search out, but again, I found enough detail in it to hold my attention. I agree entirely with you about the electronic wallpaper that the singer is singing against, which for me, only serves (as a negative example) to emphasise how beautiful the solo, unaccompanied voice can be, especially one like Ms O'Dwyer's. Anyway, I have no doubt I shall be hearing the song regularly as the enquirer is a local publican where our regular music/singing session happens every Wednesday - now I only have to find her 'The Jogger From Clare' to win my free pint - cheers all! I don't mind the accompaniment on that title track on YouTube, as it's very low in pitch so doesn't mask the words. So I went looking for the CD to find it's unavailable (except one secondhand copy on Amazon at a ridiculous price). But it is available to download from here, where you can listen to a short sample of each track. Having listened to a few of them, however, I now can only agree with Jim: lovely singer, shame about the accompaniment. |

It's nothing to do with one accompanying instrument being more or less authentic than another. It's whether the accompaniment enhances or degrades the overall experience of hearing the song (a subject much discussed on some other threads). If the accompaniment prevents me from hearing all the words clearly that is a big negative for me. There are some situations where the overall musical sound is more important than understanding all the words (e.g. much of opera) but this isn't one of them. Other listeners are of course fully entitled to their own opinions. |
