Probably the one when I was a teen and she paid for it all.

Oh yes, I remember a very cheap date. We were in our late 30's & early 40's and I can't even remember now where I met him but he took me to a fast food restaurant called, Carl's Jr. (a well known fast food joint in California with locations all over U.S.A.) If I was a teenager I probably wouldn't think too much about it - but wow - at our ages - to take someone there on a first date - is terrible!
I didn't know ahead of time we were going there. He picked me up at my place and I thought we were going somewhere for a nice dinner.
I am not looking to be taken to a 5 star restaurant - even a nice coffee shop would be fine - but not a fast food place!!
This guy was so conceited as well. In his car, he would turn on the radio and sing real loud along with the songs! Not just one song - but every song!

He was very cute, nice looking - but I did not want to go out with him again!

I know what you mean. Fast food. I'll take a gal to a Chinese restaurant before I'd do that. Costs about the same as fast food. And you get waitstaff and ambience.

A nice, quiet canoe ride on a fall afternoon.
Perfect.

Full Disclosure:
A nice, quiet canoe ride on a fall afternoon.
    Perfect.

Didn't cost a penny, because I was the canoe instructor.

Well, come to think of it, there was one problem - the lake was surrounded by drunken hunters in duck blinds. That's fall in Wisconsin. No wonder we were the only boat on the lake.

Ah, but love conquered all and we had a great time, and we didn't get shot.

That's it, Joe. No need to spend big to have a good time. I liked taking them on hikes in the woods, too.

Oh yeah, to be in my 20s again...

Her name was Cynthia and she was hotter than a $3 pistol, newly separated, and had not only bought a pair of tickets for a Hall & Oates concert but had a bottle of wine chilling back at her place...

Cost: $0...

Did I mention that she was newly separated??? Well, it did cost me a little sleep but, hey...

I've had some zero cost dates too, and among them were some of the best I've ever had.

I think a "walk in the woods" would be ok if you had known the person awhile - but these day I wouldn't "walk in the woods" with anyone that I did not know real well. You might not ever come out of those woods again!
That is a pretty cheap date - didn't stop for a meal or coffee or tea or have a little lunch after walking in the woods? Even if I knew the guy well, I would still think he should take you for a meal and cup of coffee or nice cup of tea & cakes after the walk in the woods.

Cheap can also mean tight fisted. I had a date with such a man last summer, I dont expect to be wined and dined but he was the one who suggested an arrangement for the day, anyway sometimes you can just sense the way things would go in this friendship, perhaps it is me but I am very wary of non driving men who drink beer in small halves (and only one of the cheapest brands at that) and carry their own nibbles around in a back pack. Resourcefulness is great but not very romantic, perhaps it is a British thing!

Nothing wrong with being a skinflint. I try to go dutch at every opportunity.
Did he know you well enough to start squandering money on you? Pay your own way until you both decide it's worth investing in friendship.

I am all for paying my own way, everything being equal I agree with that and I would have contributed happily but he seemed not to want to take that chance. Anyway our paths have crossed since and he has asked again for another date. At least if there is a next time I will be better prepared.

My first date with my ex-husband was a walk in the woods. However, I met him through mutual friends who had known him longer than they had me. We were introduced soon after he moved back to the area. I also had sussed him out pretty thoroughly at social gatherings for several weeks before I agreed to an actual date.

I picked her up at work and we went to dinner at one of those all night restuarants (eight bucks for both), to a thrift store (three dollars for a warm jacket) then, to a Eugene O'Donnel concert (We were comped). By the end of the evening, we were smitten.
This month, we will be married thirty years. (Eugene was terrific)
I have spent less on dates but this was the best return on investment.
