BS: Vote For Obama, Go to Hell

From: Elmore

In a video which will appear on the internet, Mike Huckabee implied that Christians who vote for the President will go to Hell. The video was sponsored by a group called Catholics Called to Witness. What happened to separation of church and state?

The church, with all various of its beliefs and whatevers has been sucking at the tit of taxpayers for ages. Time for it to stop, imo. That way, the money one gives the churches is between the giver and their god. The taxpayers don't get stung when they don't believe in that stuff and the church can deal with government just like any other taxpayer. It's more like liberation than separation of church and state. imo

When Huckabee won a primary four years ago, he announced that it showed the Lord supported his candidacy. Later he got clobbered.

So what happened? Was he wrong? But he won the primary! And he's a minister!

Surely there's an explanation.

Duh.

The logic of the thread title escapes me. It's either a puzzle of semantics or a disambiguation caused by a punctuation error. It reads like Vote Romney, Go to Heaven

What begs the question is does it mean

Vote X and go to Hell
Vote X or go to Hell
Vote X but go to Hell
Vote Y and see the Cheapest Date thread.

This place is getting complicated.

Oh for a voice like Thunder, and a tongue to drown the voice of war,
When the soul is driven to madness,
WHO CAN STAND?
When the souls of the oppressed fight in the troubled air that rages,
WHO CAN STAND?
When the whirlwind of fury comes from the throne of GOD,
WHO CAN STAND?
When the frowns of his countenance drive the nations together,
WHO CAN STAND?
When sin claps his broad wings over the battle, and sails rejoicing in the flood of death,
When the souls are torn to everlasting fire, and fiends of Hell rejoice upon the strain, Oh who can stand?
Oh who has caused this?
Oh who can answer at the throne of God?
The Kings and Nobles of the land have done it,
Hear it not Heaven,
Thy Ministers have done it!

The video mentioned in the original post comes from an organization called Catholics Called to Witness. Somebody e-mailed the video to me several months ago, with a caption that gave the impression the video was published by the Catholic Church. I sent out a round of e-mails refuting the claims of the video.
It's a pretty slick video, I have to say - but it's deceptive and I really resent the fact that it was presented as if it were official. It ain't - it's from some Catholic doctors in Florida who have too much money.
Click here for a review of the video in the blog of America, the Jesuit magazine.

What interests me is that evangelicals like Huckabee, some of whom don't even consider Catholics or Mormons to be Christians will unite with them to defeat the President.

Oh, heck, Elmore, anyone will unite with anyone to defeat what they see as a common political enemy. Countries do it all the time. Why wouldn't competing religions do it too? Differences are forgotten until the greater common enemy is out of the way!

Example: USA, Great Britain, and Soviet Russia work together happily to defeat Nazi Germany from 1941-45. Almost the moment Germany is kaput, the western Allies and the Russians become sworn enemies again...toot sweet...and the next great conflict begins.

It's standard human behaviour. Pragmatism almost always trumps principle...specially in politics and business.

Evangelist Franklin Graham (Billy's son) has appeared on CNN to explain that today's election may well be America's last chance to repent before Jesus' return, which will be "very soon."

Without endorsing Mitt Romney by name, he said that the Democratic endorsement of gay marriage defies God and that America will be judged before the Throne for it.

He also observed the Democrats had briefly removed the name of God from their platform. The removal, he implied, represents how "they" really feel, since restoring it was by political calculation, not faith.

So....

Subject: RE: BS: Vote For Obama, Go to Hell
From: Arkie

I had not seen the Huckabee video until I wrote the following which was sent to the local paper.

There have been a number of spokesmen urging people to base their vote selection in the upcoming election on "biblical principles". And I do believe that those of us who attempt to govern our lives by our Christian beliefs should exercise the same principles when we enter the voting booth. However, we should think a bit about the term 'biblical principles'. The crucifixion of Jesus was actually based upon 'biblical principles' and that crucifixion was engineered by the 'most religious' people of Jesus day. The people who plotted that crucifixion also happened to be among the most conservative religious people of that day.   There is no virtue in being religious or conservative. The virtue comes from how one conducts themselves and applies those religious beliefs.

Jesus never mentioned any of 'biblical principles' regarding abortion or homosexuality that are impressed upon voters. Nor were those issues central to the belief of Jews or Christians in earlier times. They have only become primary issues to those who wish to impose their beliefs on others. That action is certainly religious, but is neither Christian nor American. The boats leaving Europe for North America were filled with families seeking relief from having their lives controlled by someone else's religious beliefs. Descendents of these same people fought for this freedom in the Revolutionary War. Central to Jewish and Christian Biblical teaching is changing society by exemplary and charitable living.

I would suggest that those among us who trust in the words of the Bible apply principles that are central to the teaching of Scripture. The word and concept of truth occurs 237 times in the New Testament. It occurs 106 times in the Old Testament. The word 'justice' occurs 41 times in the New Testament and 124 times in the Old Testament. The term 'love' is found 259 times in the New Testament and 438 times in the Old Testament and on many of those occasions it implies compassion which was central to the life and teaching of Jesus. Why not consider the central 'Biblical Principles' of Truth, Justice, and Compassion when we go into the voting booth.

My final words are regarding a matter that was addressed often in the Old Testament, but has persisted to this day. In the book of Zechariah, chapter 13, the prophet writes: "I will remove the prophets and the sinful spirit from the land. If anyone again prophesies, then that person's birth father and mother will say, 'You won't live because you have told a lie in the name of the Lord.' Then that person's own father and mother will stab him when he prophesies". These harsh words came during a period when priests and prophets had aligned with powerful civil and economic forces to control and manipulate common citizens for their own personal gain. It is shameful and even sinful when those who claim to represent the Prince of Peace and Love align themselves with the rich and powerful and become a party to a campaign of deceit and lies under the guise of 'biblical principles' while ignoring the central message of truth and compassion.

Will anyone heed these words? Probably not. At least do this. Open your eyes. Open your minds.

"...take heed least any man deceive you..." (Mark 14:5)

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto white sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead man's bones, and of all uncleaness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity." (Mathew 42:27-28)

And lastly, for those who support "American exceptional-ism" i. e. war, war and more war...

"Woe unto you, also, lawyers! For ye lade men with burden grievous to be borne and ye yourselves touch not the burden with one of your fingers." (Luke 12:46)

Hear, hear, Arkie!

> Why not consider the central 'Biblical Principles' of Truth, Justice, and Compassion when we go into the voting booth.

I feel the answer of millions within me: "Because they're vague and boring! Ideas of slaughtering babies and performing unnatural acts are so much easier to picture, and they really fire us up!"

You'll note too that Jesus and the Apostles recommend Truth, Justice, and Compassion pretty clearly. "Biblical injunctions" against abortion and gay marriage, however, tend to rely on questionable interpretations and wishful thinking.

Note to the above:

Even atheists agree that the practice and pursuit of Truth, Justice, and Compassion benefit all people, everywhere.

And any religionist should recognize that whether stringent legal prohibitions against abortion and gay marriage "benefit" anybody is at best highly debatable.

A member of the Romney staff stated that "we will not let this campaign be dictated by fact checkers". Dishonesty has certainly entered into the campaign on both sides but there seems to be some consensus that the Republicans are winning in this part of the race.

Lying is mentioned 505 times in Jewish and Christian scripture. Liars are mentioned 344 times. I have not checked all the references but I suspect each one is opposed and I know that some condemn that action. So the Huckster and other so called churchmen have opted to join hands with liars. Seems to me the Bible indicates that God places lying much higher on the forbidden list than abortion.

I got round to watching a BBC 3 film, "Creationist Road Trip! in which a party of UK adherents were ferried around the west of the States, mostly to meet scientists. It was a pretty useless exercise (as we could have predicted), but among the contacts were a group of American Christians, who, as well as toting a poster proclaiming that the USA is a republic not a democracy, explained something of their beliefs about voting.

Because atheists and Darwinists have no moral beliefs, those voting for one would have to answer to God in the Judgement for their abandonment of their own Biblically based morals.

This is of a piece with the belief expressed by one of the group that evolutionists really know that they are wrong, but want to set up a belief that allows them to ignore the certainty of Judgement and live by their own, depraved, lights.

Why are they so afraid? And why do they want to spread this fear? And why is their faith so fragile?

It was that message that made the "vote for Obama and go to hell" idea explicable to me. They live in this horrible, hopeless bubble, open and obedient to anyone who presses the Judgement button.

Two of the people concerned in the programme had had life changing religious experiences. Strange that God did not draw their attention to the teachings Arkie has posted and let them fall into the clutches of the scare-merchants.

I personally know two people (no, not including me, and they don't know each other) who had a life-changing, Christian religious experience.

Both also believe in science and evolution. No problem. One accepts gay marriage, the other doesn't.

How, according to Creationist belief, can this be?

Were these experiences bogus, sent by the devil to delude and ensnare my friends in a rejection of Biblical literalism?

(I hear a Creationist chorus saying, "Obviously!")
