04 Nov 12 - 01:35 PM (#3430892) Subject: Lyr Req: Two songs collected in Fragments From: GUEST,Nick Dow I've been listening to some of my field recordings, and there are a couple of songs I recorded from singers that were incomplete. The first was 'The young countryman who kept company with me' to the tune of the Female Drummer. The second was a Music Hall item, called 'Fire works', or 'They soon made an angel of him there' A google search throws up my own recordings held at the British Library which is a bit awkward. Can anybody help Please. Nick |

Here's one of them: Title: They soon made an Angel of him there, etc. Author: T. W. Connor Publication Details: London : Francis, Day& Hunter, [1902] Language: Unspecified Identifier: System number 004277920 Physical Description: 2 pt ; fol. Shelfmark(s): Music Collections H.3983.j.(30.) UIN: BLL01004277920 The title also got a mention in a Mudcat thread listing songs of TW Connor: Lyr Req: The Old Cracked Basin (T W Connor). I'll have a look for the other later (though I didn't see it in the Roud index). Mick |

04 Nov 12 - 04:08 PM (#3430972) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Two songs collected in Fragments From: Steve Gardham Nick, Your other song is one of the 3 songs with the title 'The Young Man from the Country'. Luckily it's the most common of the 3. You can see a Such copy at Bodleian Broadside Ballads, Harding B11 (4377). It dates from about 1860. There's also a copy in Roy's 'Ballad History Of England' if you've got a copy. p127 So you don't get the wrong one the first line is 'When first I went to service.' |
