(The most recent cover: Archie Fisher and James Keelaghan with the Barra McNeils on their recent Celtic Colours collaborative CD singing 'Strange Lover is a coal mine'.) The CD is: Strange Lover is a Coalmine: The Mining Songs of Ed Pickford. On Hooky Mat records, available from Anthony Robb, sold to benefit a cancer charity here here Very powerful collection; some new songs as well as old favourites. Among the new, a great one about Mother Jones that you can hear in another version on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3ItbZeZBE8&feature=share&list=UUOTRP6QO6CBf3avTHSZvNzw Some of the songs here have travelled so far that they are sometimes erroneously ascribed to trad such as: Pound a Week Rise, The Worker's Song, Farewell Johnny Miner--sadly, they are as relevant and necessary today as when they were first written. |

I remember seeing Dick Gaughan singing Farewell Johnny Miner many years ago and more recently Tom McConville with Strange Lover ... Ed Pickford is a marvel, a real inspiration, and it's great that the proceeds from the album should go to such a worthwhile cause. |
