Review: My blog is looking for artists to review

From: MahoganyFolk

Many of you already know the mahogany folk forum but I just wanted to put it out there that I'm always looking for music to review on my blog. http://www.mahoganyfolk.com/blog

I'm mainly looking for folk, bluegrass, country or indie. Big bands, or even small time!

Thanks guys!

Do you have anything on YouTube, soundcloud etc?

Can I make an impertinent suggestion?

I really, really, really think you should alter the setup of your website. The mahoganyfolk.com
home page is a forum! There's nothing on that home page to suggest that there are any reviews or articles anywhere on that site. I looked at it and thought, oh, just another forum, like the million-and-one forums out there.

It's only because of this Mudcat thread that I was aware that there might be something else to look for besides a forum on your site. I deduced that it was probably the "Blog" button. And lo and behold, it takes me to a well-designed, attractive and interesting magazine-style website, with plenty to read, plenty to look at, well-put-together articles etc...

You really, really, really need to make this page your home page:
http://mahoganyfolk.com/blog/

Not the forums! Forums should be secondary to content. You're hiding your talents and hard work under a bushel.

And, while we're at it, you're more a magazine than a blog.

Your idea is fantastic and I sure do wish you and all the musicians that can figure how to send you something luck as well. But matt milton is dead on. Your web site needs a lot of work and I say this in a positive way. If I could help you I would but I'm not great at computer skill.

I'm currently moving things around taking your suggestions and making the mahoganyfolk.com go directly to the blog instead of forum..
working through some bugs..

Hi: I checked out your blog, good to see people keeping Folk alive. I thought to connect with you as I check Mudcat every once in a while, those Folk Roots you know...The Yellow Door, Montreal Folk Workshop, etc.

The music I produce these days is more Indie, Rock, Blues than Folk, even going into Dance music. So you may not want to review me, but I thought, "why not just reach out anyway?..."

Good Luck, keep up the good work...bob

Hi Jeff: It is Jeff, right? The Internet is a curious beast. I am on a lot of sites, one of which is Fandalism. "Pud", the creator of Fandalism, had the idea of creating an "invitation only" site
for musician's. The only way to get on there is if somebody recommends you.

Anyway, the thing just snowballed to the point where he now has something in excess of 400, 000 members. He is now working on getting the thing monetized. It just grew and grew.

So today's blogger may very well be tomorrow's mega site owner. Wish you success...bob

GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz, it's Fandalism's request to post on your behalf when you first sign on to their site that, I suspect, is at least part of the reason for their success at drawing in users. Like most Facebook apps, that require you to give up you friends list info in order to sign on and use them, Fandalism claims that they, "won't auto post or spam you or your friends." They say, "we need this permission to make it easy for you to share stuff if you ask us to." However, I believe that they still use this info and your permission to post on your behalf to access to your friend's info in order to try to reap users from your friends list by inviting them to join.

Perhaps this is not the right thread to discuss it but I'd be interested in hearing from you regarding how the Fandalism site has benefited your endeavors. Does it work for you and those others that you might know who have joined?

You could contact Kiwifolk.com to access most NZ folk performers.
'The Chaps' from Dunedin would tick most of your genre boxes, and add reggae and original music. Good performers by any standard.

Jeff, once again, THANK YOU for reviewing my efforts along musical path!

I was surprised to learn that Mahogany Folk is based right here in the Seattle area of the great Pacific Northwest.

Okay, this is off topic. Bob wasn't able to get back to me via this thread or a PM... yet. So, I went ahead and checked further into Fandalism and I went for it. Made three posts within the last 24 hours and have reaped quite a few responses as a result. Listeners from as far away as Poland, Switzerland, Finland, The Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Maryland, Ontario, The UK, Italy, Slovakia, Iowa, California, as well as some locals from here in the Seattle area have all checked out my pursuits. :o)

No they don't. What an inane comment!

The amount of negativity on this site is horrid. Regarding the sounds like comment, that was from their biography.

Hi Kids: Just saw reggies post, never got any messages, oh well.

Anyway, Reg, to answer your question. I got involved with Fandalism via a friend who nominated me to join. I also contacted the founder, "Pud", a nice guy, who also invited me in.

It's all good for me so far, nothing invasive, just a whole lot of musicians from every genre imaginable, all showing what their doing, connecting, giving "props" (American slang that means they like what they are hearing, seeing.) 0 negativity among the members, no haterz, so that's pretty cool.

I thought Jeff and all of you mudcatters might enjoy checking it out, although it is not specifically Folk focused.

What makes Fandalism interesting for me, is that you can upload videos, link sites like iTunes, and post photos, which gives me a chance to see how effective my promotional activities have been. For instance, one photo I put up got in excess of 38,700 views. WHY, I just don't know. It was a simple line drawing of me at college holding my guitar, sitting on the cement wall of the library, if memory serves me right. Done on some red wrapping paper, so go figure...

For me, simply another way to get my music known. No problems with the site whatsoever...Peace...bob

Lemmee see, BM?, now WHO do I know that has the initials BM? Burgess Meredith? Nope. Bob Mylan, jeez no, that's Dylan. Never met either of them..

I be fine BM, doing the best I can with what I got...don't want to go "off topic" more than I have already.

We are STILL pretty...bob
