Tech: Yahoo Messenger compromise... gnu

A while back, I had a breech in security. It seemed innocuous. It was dealt with in due time by the powers of Microsoft and my ISP security supplier (Norton). I dunno if this was a result of any of that but a good Mudcat buddy of mine sent me a PM just moments ago regarding my comms on Yahoo Messenger. I had not connected in ages.

I tried to sign in. I jumped thru the hoops and then I was asked to answer my first "question". It was in a language I am not familiar with. So... off to my ISP for a chat... here it is...

9:32 PM You have granted full permission to Technician. To revoke, click the red X on the toolbar or press Pause/Break on the keyboard.
9:33 PM Connecting...
9:33 PM Connected. A support representative will be with you shortly.
9:33 PM Support session established with Nick.

9:33 PM Nick: Hello, thank you for choosing Rogers Live Support. My Name is Nick, how can I assist you today?
9:34 PM Gary owens: I was contacted by a friend and told I had entered a Yahoo Meesenger sessiion.
9:34 PM Gary owens: I did not.
9:34 PM Gary owens: I tried to get into my Yahoo messenger.
9:34 PM Nick: Did you log into your email at www.mail.rogers.com?
9:34 PM Gary owens: I was told my details were not correct.
9:35 PM Gary owens: No, not into my email. That works fine. Near as I know.
9:36 PM Nick: I am referring to this as the yahoo messenger is also in your browser
9:36 PM Gary owens: When I tried Messenger, I was prompted to answer my "questions". The firt one was in another language.
9:36 PM Nick: so if you have this enabled it will say you log in when checking the website
9:37 PM Nick: what is the rogers .com email address?
9:37 PM Gary owens: I do not understand.
9:37 PM Gary owens: ************* (censored, obviously)
9:39 PM Gary owens: The deal is someone else is posing as me on Yahoo Messenger.
9:39 PM Gary owens: I cannot sign into Yahoo Messenger.
9:39 PM Nick: I am not seeing any signs of compromise on your email at this time
9:39 PM Nick: You can change your email password by logging into the website www.rogershelp.ca/reset
9:39 PM Gary owens: Well, neither am I.
9:40 PM Gary owens: I don't need to reset my email password.
9:41 PM Gary owens: I need to find out why I cannot get on Yahoo Meesenger and why someone else is posing as me on Yahoo Messenger.
9:41 PM Nick: If someone is able to log into your yahoo messenger then changing the password will change their access
9:42 PM Gary owens: So... you are saying that this person also knows my email password?
9:42 PM Nick: if they are able to log into your yahoo messenger it is the same password to my knowlegde
9:43 PM Gary owens: That seems very odd and very upsetting to me.
9:44 PM Gary owens: So, is that it then?
9:44 PM Nick: That should solve this issue for you Is there anything else i can help you with?
9:45 PM Gary owens: No. I'll try that. Thanks.
9:45 PM Nick: You're welcome and I would like to thank you for choosing Rogers Live Support and hope to help you again in the future.

Hmmmm.... I hope I NEVER need Nick's help again... am I right? >;-)

So, there it is. I have been twice violated in very short order. I am rather upset. I think it may be time for me to call in my nephew and some other geeks and get to the bottom of this shit but I hate to bother them. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get rid of this (these) hacker(s) or troll(s) I would truly appreciate it.

In the meantime, take any precautions you deem appropriate if you are one of my regular email contacts. I shall be debiting ALL my contacts from my email at Rogers email and starting over again unless someone tells me that ain't gonna do any good. Please tell me it won't do any good. I don't wanna do it if I it ain't gonna help. It's a shitload of work and I am a lazy sumbitch.

Ummm... I just thought of something. if this person was able to access my Yahoo Messenger and change my access to that... how come MY access to my email did not change? It's the same password as per :9:42 PM Nick: if they are able to log into your yahoo messenger it is the same password to my knowlegde.

How could I access my email but not my Messenger if it was the same password?

Am I missin somethin here?

Blow up your Computer,
Move to the country,
Build yourself a home.
Plant a little garden,
Grow a lot of peaches.
Try and find Jesus,
and fuck the rest.

Good luck buddy.

9, last time I was on Messenger was with a buddy of ours and that's a LOT more than a couple of years ago.

I any case, whoever it was was messenging my contacts as if it was me. I can assure all and sundry... t'weren't me.

Thanks for the heads up, T. Alert yer Messenger buddies to have nothing to do with "me". THAT me doesn't seem to trustworthy. S/he might be disabled by my password changes but I WAS hacked. And, I just don't use Messenger... for years now.

Iff someone managed to guess (or steal) your password and send email from your account pretending to be you, they most likely had access to all your contacts. If they copied them off, they can just send them emails from any email account they set up with your name on it, and claim to be you and that you just changed your email address.

Obviously, along with changing your password on the existing account, you must change all your friends.

So we'll need understand if you pretend to be some sorta nice guy while you try to find some new ones?

(Obviously, I'm not serious about this, I hope. We'd miss the ol' you.)
