BS: Rep. Allen West Florida Good-Bye

Conservative Republican Congressman Allen West was defeated in a close race in Florida by his Democratic opponent: Click here for story!

West is well known, among other things, for referring to all Democrats as "Communists." Democrat Patrick Murphy's margin of victory is about 2500 votes and certainly will be subject to a recount. I can only hope that his lead survives the challenge.

We Floridians are in a bit of a quandary where Mr. West is concerned. We certainly don't want him purporting to represent our interests in Washington, but we don't want him back in Florida either.

I was hoping West would share a talk show with Michelle Bachmann, to provide comedians with years of material... but maybe he can get Sharron Angle or "Not a Witch" Christene O'Donnell.... or 3-4others

There's ALWAYS another nut job waiting in the wings, but considering the depth & breadth of West's idiocy, ignorance and obnoxiousness he'll be a damned hard act to follow.

Isn't it rich that West was complaining about some "disturbing irregularities" in Florida's voting process when Gov. Scott et al had done a lot to make voting in Florida more difficult?

"Isn't it rich that West was complaining about some "disturbing irregularities" in Florida's voting process"?

The irregularities that West was most likely complaining about was that Democrats were permitted to vote in his district.

I this done yet? I read somewhere he was calling for a recount, since the number of uncounted absentee votes is quite larger than his loss?
Anybody hear anything about this?

I just read that he had called for a recount. That is not surprising. Should he actually lose, there is probably a job waiting as a commentator at Fox.

Recounts of close elections is certainly a normal part of elections. We've got at least a dozen legislative races in Maine where the margin of victory is less than 200 votes.

However, I do feel queasy about the Florida voting officials at this point. I'm not sure how they are appointed. In Maine the people who recount the ballots have to be in teams of two volunteers, one from each major party. But sometimes the voting supervisors are the ones who actually read out the ballots to the volunteers, which could to duplicity.

Anyone from Florida have actual experience in conducting recounts?

At this point, it is unclear if the recount will be allowed. The vote margin is more than the recount threshold - 1/2 of a percent, I think. Of course, Mr. West is within his rights to decline to concede before all of the absentee and provisional ballots are counted...and Florida seems to be doing a really crappy job on that. Once the election is certified, a concession is irrelevant, but I don't think that happens until the end of the month.

Thanks, Art.

In our State of Maine a defeated candidate can still request and pay for a recount even if the threshold is not met.

the recount was not allowed at the 2000 and 2004 election respectively and the voting there was decidedly crooked. Later polls found that Kerry had won Florida. Gore, too. SCOTUS intervened.

Glad they got rid of West, though.

As a longtime Floridian I'm really disgusted. Gov. Scott and the Republican controlled legislature did all they could to turn this into an election process that would make a 3rd world dictator blush. I suppose they hoped that by cutting back on early voting and overloading our ballot with 11 proposed constitutional amendments of mostly silly right wing initiatives (worded in an overly lengthy and confusing manner) they would have the opportunity to manipulate a close election and hand the presidency over to the Republicans, a la 2000. Let's hope they pay for it at the polls. I'm going to do my part to that end. At least they lost their super majority.

No, there's still evident life in West's campaign:

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner sent three elections officials to St. Lucie County to investigate vote tabulation issues that affected the race between Rep. Allen West (R) and Patrick Murphy (D).

After a partial recount of early voting in the county, West gained 132 votes and challenger Murphy lost 667. But Murphy's lead over West is still outside the margin to trigger recount. The defeated congressman has filed a complaint with the county asking for a retabulation of all early voting ballots in St. Lucie.

"We are concerned whenever there is a question about the accuracy of results," Detzner spokesman Chris Cate told WPTV. State Rep. Gayle Harrell (R) encouraged the audit, which will take about 72 hours.

West has already lost a motion to impound ballots and voting machines for a potential recount. Murphy has headed to Washington this week for freshman orientation on Capitol Hill.

"Everything is a conspiracy theory to [West], like everyone's against him," Murphy told reporters from Washington. "That's not the case."

West is still losing by about a 1000 votes. Stay tuned to this story.

Looking more encouraging for Patrick Murphy this afternoon:

"The odds of Rep. Allen B. West (R-Fla.) prevailing in Florida's 18th District race grew longer Sunday when a recount of early ballots yielded Democratic opponent Patrick Murphy a net gain of nearly 300 votes, expanding his lead over the incumbent to more than 2,000 votes.

A St. Lucie County recount resulted in Murphy gaining 274 votes, the Associated Press reported. Murphy's campaign continued to claim victory, while West's campaign refused to give in just yet, the AP also reported. But the Republican's options appear to be limited. His deficit is outside the automatic recount threshold, and time is running out."

Who's for holding a half-baked sale for the benefit of ex-Congressman Allen B. West?

Here's what Wicipedia has to say about an incident in Iraq which led to a displinary hearing for West:

Iraq interrogation incident

While serving in Taji, Iraq, West received qualified information from an intelligence specialist about a plot to ambush his unit. The alleged plot reportedly involved Yahya Jhodri Hamoodi, a civilian Iraqi police officer. West had his men detain Hamoodi.[14] Soldiers testified that in the process of detaining Mr. Hamoodi, he appeared to reach for his weapon and needed to be subdued.[14] Hamoodi was beaten by four soldiers from the 2/20th Field Artillery Battalion on the head and body.[15] West then fired his pistol near Hamoodi's head,[14] after which Hamoodi provided West with names and information, which Hamoodi later described as "meaningless information induced by fear and pain."[14] At least one of these suspects was arrested as a result, but no plans for attacks or weapons were found.[14] West said "At the time I had to base my decision on the intelligence I received. It's possible that I was wrong about Mr. Hamoodi."[14]
West was charged with violating articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. During a hearing held as part of an Article 32 investigation in November 2003, West stated, "I know the method I used was not right, but I wanted to take care of my soldiers."[15] The charges were ultimately referred to an Article 15 proceeding rather than court-martial, at which West was fined $5,000.[14] Lieutenant Colonel West accepted the judgment and retired with full benefits in the summer of 2004. Asked if he would act differently under similar circumstances, West testified, "If it's about the lives of my soldiers at stake, I'd go through hell with a gasoline can."[15] At his hearing, West pointed out that there were no further ambushes against American forces in Taji until he was relieved of his leadership post on October 4.[16]

West's political demise doesn't mean his ideology won't prevail. There are too many people in the U.S. who would agree with him.

The solution is that people need education, free, and access to real information, not the infotainment they receive at the hands of Fox, CNN and Murdoch.

West appeals to the ignorant, the stubborn hypocrisy of the Republicans today, the misinformed public and those whose "morality" is authoritarian and fearful.

He's only one fellow. I agree with Wesley in that there will be other bigots to take his place.
