Albums Of The Year start here

Froots are first out of the block with their Critics Poll Nominees. Then I suppose it'll be the Folk Awards (aka The Hardings, until regime change). Looks like a good list for starters, especially to see two Voice Of The People volumes in there.

Yeah, I appreciated those VOTPs being there.

I haven't really checked out much non-British stuff this year, but I'll investigate the African albums in that fRoots top 10.

My favourite folk album this year was C Joynes & Stephanie Hladowski, "The Wild Wild Berry".

In truth, that is the only folk album I've heard this year that I've liked.

My favourite album this year was Never by Micachu. Glorious life-affirming stuff, best album I've heard in about a decade; didn't think I was ever again likely to hear a pop album I liked, but one proved me wrong.

Bloody typical of that elitist rag fRoots, nominating albums by people who've made excellent music and, what's more, have been popular in concerts, CD sales and downloads.

And it's all foreign rubbish as well! Apart from Bellowhead, Fay Hield, Sam Lee, Lau, Jim Moray, Karine Polwart and Emily Portman, there's not a SINGLE BRITISH ACT IN THE TOP TEN!!!!

Where's all the nominations for really rubbish people who make a terrible amateurish out-of-tune din and I've never heard of because they've never made a CD or played a gig outside of their own back room?

It's all a terrible back-scratching conspiracy led by Ian A Anderson, the BBC Folk Awards, and Mike Harding - oh no, sorry, suddenly we all like Mike Harding don't we, I forgot.

Steve, you forgot to mention Sam Lee isn't a pretentious middle class art school dilettante poseur twat
who just happens to have been born with an amazingly good singing voice..

oh hold on, I got confused by the deep levels of cynical irony ???

Sam Lee is actually a pretentious middle class art school dilettante poseur twat
who just happens to have been born with an amazingly good singing voice.

The fRoots AotY charts have always been loaded heavily towards GB for the simple reason that the magazine has far more reviewers of GB albums than from anywhere else. There's a substantial number of us who provide reviews of music from other countries, but hardly ever enough to dent the GB hegemony when it comes to the annual poll.

"The fRoots AotY charts have always been loaded heavily towards GB"

According to the list on the link, 17 out of their 26 annual winners have been non-UK, including 9 out of the past 12 years. That's why I don't read Froots, they don't back Britain. How often do they put folk on the front page?

Winners, yes, but look at the rest of each year's charts.

I don't know what it proves other than that everybody has agreed with each other but all the BBC Folk Awards album nominees are included in the fRoots List. I'm surprised there's no Kate Rusby or Show of Hands in either though, both had albums out recently and I thought they always got an automatic freedom pass in these things, especially BBC who seemed to have shares in the Ruzzer at one time.

A Voice Of The People won then - I'm A Romany Rai. And Sam Lee. Expect the Mudcat Sam Lee backlash to start any minute now then (ref the previous experiences of Jim Moray, Unthanks etc)

Bugger the Sam Lee backlash, I'm going for the start of the VotP backlash. Bloody typical of fRoots, ignoring the real undiscovered talent on the current folk scene in favour of some old recordings made in places I've never heard of ....

Oh dear, 4 of the 5 Guardian picks are in the Froots 10, as are all the Folk Awards nominees. And 3 of the Guardian list are in the Folk Awards nominees too. I smell a fish and a rat and a conspiratorial Venn diagram. How come all the so-called self-appointed experts agree with each other? Send for Emma! Why is nobody voting for Kate Rusby? Why is nobody voting for Derek Brimstone?
