Adrien Norm Hello musical friends..As a recording musician i ask for your input. Most music stores excluding CD Warehouse and Compact disc ,carry little or no cds of local recording artists??Why is that??We the local musicians Buy our musical instruments, accessories, lessons,piano's,pianoes,guitars,etc,etc from these stores and there is very little exposure othCd'sthan cds from other countries??My taughts,are..The first thing as a musician would like to see is local artists having a display case.what you think?? |

If so, are ya gonna remember how many you left? 2) If you're local, won't most people who want your stuff already have it? An aside: there is one a$$hole here who never bought a CD in his life. He doesn't mind having somebody 'rip him one' however. 3) CDs are a pain to carry as a retailer because they are easy to lift. (Had three of mine walk that way. Hell, I can name the people who took 'em.) 4) I agree with Norm, but a display case means what? If it's gonna cost the retailer more than s/he will ever make by selling local artist CDs, who's going to do that? |

The large ones like HMV in Ottawa and Sam the Record Man in Toronto have closed up shop. The new marketplace is the internet - like it or not. |

Otherwise I think CD-Stores should carry CDs of local musicians. The locals might have them already, but not the tourists. When I am on holiday I like to bring some as souvenirs. Same goes for big stores that sell instruments as well as CDs (I remember Archambault in Montreal having both). For instrument shops that don`t carry CDs it is not a must. One guitar shop round here used to have a few CDs of local musicians, but gave up since. Apparently not enough sales. Best Ernest |

14 Nov 12 - 09:39 AM (#3436427) Subject: RE: C/D Sales of Local Musicians From: John P As someone who use to do the CD buying for a local folk music store, I can state with confidence that local musician CDs don't sell unless the musician is already quite well-known locally and is playing LOTS of gigs to stay that way. I'm talking about the top 5% or so of musicians who put out CDs. The store I worked at had a policy of supporting local musicians by carrying their CDs and, for years, we always bought a few. We usually had a "Local Music" section as well as putting them in whatever section they belonged in. These days, no CDs are selling and stores are getting out of the business. But even before that happened, local CDs, for the most part, represented money down the drain and dead shelf space. We tried the consignment route, but that actually cost more than buying them outright -- we had to keep track of them, and that takes time, especially since a majority of the local musicians are inept at running their businesses. |

( WE AT GIBSON GUITAR SUPPORT LOCAL CD RECORDING ARTISTS ) The guitar companies provide the display case which shines on them.. As for cds becoming out of touch ,what do you hand out at a concert ? |

People do want to take home a memory, and a CD facilitates that. Musicians who want to put out a CD should understand that they will sell CDs at shows and, in general, nowhere else. If you don't play shows, you probably won't sell CDs. |

I'd guess that virtually all local performers' CDs are sold at concerts. This is an uncomforable truth for one in the CD selling business to face. I've found that even CDs by well-known and respected UK performers don't sell in the US , unless the performer has been touring over here: CDs by the likes of Pete Coe and John Connoly just don't sell over here. |
