15 Nov 12 - 01:48 AM (#3436802) Subject: American Folk Singer - Nancy Rhoades From: GUEST,Lin I recently purchased a used LP by an American folk singer named Nancy Rhoades. The LP is called, Ballads & Blues of FolkMusic. Album notes on back of LP cover indicates she was 17 years old when she made this album. She sings songs like "All My Trials" "Polly Von" "House of the Rising Sun" and others. It is a great album with further information that she was from North Carolina & a few other southern USA states. She has a lovely, lovely voice! I tried doing a Google Search for her to find out more information, or if she recorded any other records and possibly still in the music business. I found a lot of hits - but all referred back to notes about the album and also three or four songs uploaded by someone on Youtube from this album. I could not find any further information about this singer other then many, many references about the LP. If anyone knows of this singer, what became of her after this one album and if she remained in the music business please post information. She probably is married now so of course would have a different name. I think the album was released around 1975. |

I don't have Myspace on this computer (not my computer) and it gives you differet choices to get to Myspace. I can use this computer but hestitate to download any new programs. Not sure which one I need to download. Can you only get on Myspace on these sites they have to choose from? Or can you get to Myspace another way? Not sure if I should download from one of these or not as the owner of this computer is away and I don't really like to download something that might effect the computer in some way. Does the Myspace for Nancy Rhoades only give you songs to listen to? I have the album and also Youtube has songs posted from this album. Is there further information about Nancy Rhoades on MySpace or just has the songs to hear? Since I already have the LP I don't think I would download to get Myspace to hear them - but if they are different songs from the ones on LP I would be interested. Could you please let me know if there is other information about Nancy Rhoades other then just the songs to listen to? Thank you, Lin |

I just clicked on the link and it brings up a myspace site with four songs to listen to which seem to be demos for an album called Song From The Edge from 2006 which was perhaps never actually released. There is acoustic guitar backing not unlike the album you mention and a very nice female vocal. Deeper than your Nancy's voice but of course there is three decades between them! I kind of disagree with Guest999. It may well not be the same Nancy but to me it ould very well be the right age group. She would be about 54 now and the myspace site doesn't seem to have been logged into for about 5 years or so - and of course people don't always have up to date photographs anyway. There are two photos of her and she could well be in her late 40s. A quite attractive late 40s right enough :-) It doesn't say much else apart from she lives in Greensboro, North Carolina! |

The album was released in 1975 but sometime information on back of LP could have been collected a little before that time. Or she might have been turning 18 sometime in 1975, after album release. But I think she probably is in her mid-50's now. Anything found out about Copeland Records? If they are still around? Of course, even if they are still in existence, (and probably a small record company at that), the chances of engineers & other staff that worked there at that time would not be working there anymore. Hope you guys got to hear some of her songs on Youtube. The entire album is not posted, but just three or four songs from the album. |

That's the step that Nancy Rhoades has made since her high school days when she sang and played her guitar for friends. Her persistence in auditioning in New York resulted in Miss Rhoades winning a spot in Henderson's touring company which appeared here recently, ..... During her high school years in Greensboro she started playing the guitar and singing folk music. At one point she even made a record album, but most of her music was on a non-professional level. When she began college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she started a major in piano. After one year Miss Rhoades transferred to the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. ... she is singing folk ballads as a part of Henderson's program, but is also an actress, and has done modeling. ... Her major at the school of the arts was theater. Then two years ago Miss Rhoades went to New York to begin her professional career. For two years, it was an endless procession of auditions for her. She did some modeling, and once appeared at The Village Voice, a nightclub in New York. Her break came when Henderson was putting together a touring company, and required a folk singer. "I went to audition for him, and he liked me," she relates. Asked if she felt it would assist her in her career, Miss Rhoades replied, "It's giving me a chance to perform, so definitely it's good. "I like touring even though the bus rides between concerts are very long," the folk singer asserted." I enjoy singing for a different audience each night, and I thoroughly enjoy Skitch." ... Back to her singing, Miss Rhoades recollected that she sang in 1964 and 1965 at the Asheville Folk Festival. At that time she performed the "Ballad of Geordie," a song she is using on the Henderson concert tour. "You just can't narrow it down to a love for music, though," she asserted. "I like acting just as good." "When I get back to New York, I'll audition for whatever interests me," Miss Rhoades said. The tour ends around Thanksgiving. About the audition, she said no one particularly likes them, but it's part of the way of life. She is completely self-taught in her guitar playing. Miss Rhoades said Joan Baez was perhaps the biggest influence on her during her high school days. She also has an appreciation for Judy Collins and Peter, Paul and Mary, other famous folk artists. Miss Rhoades says that during the past few yearns she has tried to develop her own style, and believes she's still changing in an effort convey the message that folk songs contain. She says that Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Elton John, Carole King and other modern singers employ the ballad with a rock beat, making them no more than modern day folk singers. On the tour with Henderson, Miss Rhoades appeared in Winston-Salem, and her mother saw her performance, "She's really great," Miss Rhoades bubbled. "She didn't just tell me how great the concert was, but she gave me some real constructive criticism. "After all, what I really want is to say something, to communicate, my feelings to others," Miss Rhoades concluded. SO - anyone know what became of her after the Henderson tour??? I can see why she would be interested in modeling - she was a very pretty girl at 17 years old on her album cover. But of course modeling is extremely difficult field to get into - and short lived with fierce competition. I wonder if she had any success with acting? I don't recall seeing her name in any movies - but perhaps she had some small roles. Seems like she was quite ambitious in all of the arts. I wonder if she ever recorded that song, "Ballad of Geordie"? Hopefully someone out there will be familiar with her work after the Henderson tour. Thanks again! Lin |

We met in NC when I was in grad school at Chapel Hill. We moved to New York City in 1969 and lived there until 74. Moved to the Shenandoah Valley where I had prior taught at JMU and we divorced that year. Just fell apart. She went back to Greensboro and I think still lives there. Apparently she still does some pergorming. Her current age is 65. A great artist who had a lot of success but did not succeed in recording, though her recordings are great. |
